Berserker
I have a special the ability to calm a berserker, but I’ve been warned never to use it. My mother “If you see a berserker in a rage… not your monkeys, not your circus. Get the hell away. They’re too dangerous, and you’ll lose your freedom.” But the thing is… we’re flying 30,000 feet in the air in a speeding aluminum cage, and there’s a berserker raging out in the aisle beside me. Security won’t be able to hold him. They won’t be strong enough. They have no idea what they’re dealing with. And if he gets a taste of blood, he’s going to rampage through the entire plane leaving a path of death and destruction, including me. I’ve never used my power before. I’m afraid it won’t work and he’ll turn on me, but I know all too well what these beasts are capable of. There’s nowhere to go, and he’s just getting started. I have one Calm him, and hope I can escape when the plane lands.

Not worth the current price tag.
This was ok...however, I didn't realize it was a mere 95 pages long. If I had known that, I wouldn't have paid the $3.99 for this.
Now, before people get their panties in a twist...I fully believe in authors getting paid fairly for their work. And I'm not suggesting that $3.99 for 95 pages isn't fair. I'm merely saying that it's a little steeper than what I personally prefer to pay for less than 100 pages. Which is MY FAULT for not being more diligent about checking the page count before purchasing.
That said, this book was ok. Honestly, with this subject matter and knowing Kitty's talent, this could have been an awesome full-length. But at this page count, it was just too rushed and too short. If you go in expecting a surface level romp, you might enjoy this more.

Beserker may be a short story,it has the body of a full-lenght novel.
The background is painted with detail,and the characters are well defined.
Using the Norse Mythology in a way only Kitty Thomas can,we meet Chloe,the Beserker and Cade on a plane for the first time.
The inner musings of Chloe tell us how this world works,and she does it with an unique sense of humor.
And her feelings concerning the Beserker that emerges from Cade on that plane?
Even though she knows she’s the only one equipped to calm the beast,she’s still hesitant to do so.
In the end she does,but the consequences of that act will change her life….forever.

4.5 stars!
Ok so I loved this! Chloe is a Valkyrie and ends up on a plane with a Berserker that goes a little berserk. Being a Valkyrie, she has the power to calm him but doing that sets in motion an entirely different future for Chloe. One she isn't sure she wants.
Cade has a Berserker in him and it's only a matter of time before the beast overtakes the man...or will he? What happens now that Chloe is the Berserker's mate and Cade's life is irrevocably changed?
Honestly, I was a little concerned going into this that I would not like Cade. I don't like my book boyfriends sweet haha. Give me the Berserker every day! But I love what Thomas did with his character. Chloe was a strong character and had realistic reactions to everything being thrown her way and I really liked that about her. This was such a short story but I think Thomas was able to pack quite a punch. I do think the ending was a little rushed and I would have liked to have had an epilogue of some sort. But overall, I think Thomas killed it with this story!!

I wasn’t impressed with this one. I didn’t realize it was only 100 pages and wish I would’ve picked it up as a freebie back in May…cuz $4 is steep for a short book with little plot.
GENERAL PLOT SPOILERS
In a nutshell, the h is a Valkyrie that has crossed dimensions to Earth when she witnesses a Berserker about to lose his shit. There is very little world building provided but I understood it like this…
A bunch of magical creatures live in different dimensions and all cross into Earth to visit. Chloe has been raised on Earth away from her people and doesn’t have the “normal” skills and instincts but knows that Valkyries can “tame” berserkers. Both magical creatures have ties to Odin/Norse mythology. I think they are intended to be mates with the female calming the males.
The plot—Chloe “calms” Cade on the plane. His berserker “marks” her and he chases her down. That’s pretty much it with the addition of smut after he “catches” her.
Bottom Line- Short, weird, not very satisfying with a HFN ending and no glimpse into the future.

Kitty Thomas you never cease to amaze me with your stories and your sensational way of grabbing the reader from the start of your story until the end!
This Berserker story captured me from the first page at 30,000 feet, needing to see what happened to these characters. Did the Berserker finally capture his mate? Did Cade finally figure out his role in this epic tale?

I like the idea of this story and the plot as a whole; I expected this to be much steamier, but the author essentially glazed over what promised to be explosive sex scenes which was very disappointing.
4 stars for the story; 2 stars for the steam (which was built up so much and then fell flat) = 3 stars
(Note - there are some possible triggers in this story, including abduction, imprisonment, forced proximity against will, bondage without consent, dubious consent sex)

I enjoyed it while it lasted, but way too short, and because of that everything seemed underwhelming and bland ,the characters, their connection and chemistry , the world building and plot.
Its a shame cos the idea with the valkyries being fated for berserkers was cool.

I’m honestly not sure wtf I listened to just now, but it wasn’t great. Just a really strange story with a disappointing ending that I can’t even call a HFN since no one seemed too happy.
Safe? Not even sure. There’s def SA adjacent content but the heroine gives in to her betraying body syndrome really fast, so it probably can’t be counted as SA.

Chloe, a Valkyrie who has never fully embraced her true nature is suddenly trapped on a plane with a man that is obviously in a rage. Oh no! Not just a man… a Berserker! Her mom taught her “you see a berserker, you run” but there is no running on an airplane. It is suddenly up to Chloe to try to defuse the situation or the plane full of people die.

Cade / Berserker, the Cade side is the cinnamon roll hero… soft and sweet, whereas the berserker side is like a Carolina Reaper Pepper… hot, spicy and a little painful.
“𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙠 𝙆𝙚𝙣𝙩.”
I have to admit, the berserker is a truly clever beast and he totally figures out how to break down Chloe’s walls. He sure obliterated my walls…

This felt like a mix of Zoe with the supernatural and Kitty with the dark romance blended into one hell of a cocktail that I fully enjoyed.
I liked Chloe. I've recently been introduced to Vaklyrie's and find them, magical for lack of a better word. But this was my first berserker and I am intrigued. I like the idea of all of it mixed with the Norse Mythology and I am ready for the full length novel after reading the author's note.
Cade was Cade and then he was definitely CADE. When you read this, you'll get that and I won't sound so insane.

Chloe is right out of Old Norse mythology since she's a Valkyrie. But in modern days, she doesn't have too much to do, since there aren't that many heroes who believe in Odin. The only thing she's ever really been told about her powers is to run if she meets a berserker. But really, what are the chances of that happening?
It would be a really short story if she never met a berserker, and while this book is on the shorter side, it isn't that short.
I like Chloe, but I think that she kinda spent a lot of time being reactive and not active. She ran without thinking about what she was doing, other than just run. Once her brain engaged instead of just the scared part, things changed.
I would dearly love to see more from this world.

I just really liked this story! I liked the ebb and flow of it, the mystical part of it, the human part of it, and all the parts in-between. This was a well told story, it captured my attention and I wanted to know what was going to happen next, how the story would unfold, and how it would be resolved. It did not let me down, not once, and when done, I immediately wanted more!

You know when a book has everything to be crazy good and then it just ends up being a mess? This was what happened here.
I'm obsessed whit valkyries and berserkers because of Kresley Cole and her IAD series so when I found out about this book I was so curious and excited to read more of this nordic mythology but this was such a mess and disappointment 🥴

I enjoyed this short story, a man gets a new tattoo which he thinks is cool, but doesn’t realise that he got more than he bargained for, and his transformation has begun. A girl knows she belongs in mystical other realm, but she was born and raised in the human one. She is a Valkyrie, but hasn’t been taught how to harness her powers. All she was taught was to run, when faced with a Berserker. This is a tale of a human, his berserker, and his valkyrie.

1 star because I'm mad. This story had POTENTIAL. You know that feeling you get when you're about to sneeze and then you just... don't. That's what this book is. An exercise in disappointment from unmet expectations.
Somebody come look at this:
'"Why open your legs to me if you’re going to make me chase you?” It’s so weird hearing him in English. I really didn’t think he had such faculty with language… any language. And I didn’t expect him to be so… sarcastic. I mean, he is rage after all. Snarky wit didn’t seem like it would make it into that package.'
Imagine thinking any part of this dialogue was either witty or sarcastic. Truly acerebral behaviour.
From the GET-GO she's been horny for dude without even knowing him... so annoying. I fully understand thinking someone is stunningly attractive but this? No tension, no push and pull, no thoughts, just insta-lust.
Protagonist doesn't shut the hell up about how he affects her vagina, there's a lot of telling that doesn't lead to any showing. Because the sex isn't even that great either. GODS. He gives her head for like 5 seconds and then it's just raw penis. No foreplay, just d*ck. I expected more, he was portrayed like his d*ck was gonna breathe new life into my lifeless corpse and then...dry doggy-style? I wish death upon you, sir.
Don't even talk to me about the fact that dude WHIPS. HER. Am I supposed to find this sexy? Someone call someone. Someone DO something. Bleach. I need bleach.
It's a very short book, so I understand you can't exactly take your time with how things progress, but there was NO PROGRESSION HERE TO SPEAK OF! I didn't want them to be together because I didn't KNOW THEM and the little I knew made me wish they all died at the end.
The writing isn't overtly BAD, but it does lean towards mediocrity and is often quite cringey, I won't lie to you. Por example:
"And I realize with sudden striking clarity that a human male was never going to be enough for me" this was after he whips her. Get it together, man.
"Somebody was a bad girl last night. I wonder who...Yes, I gave him permission to take you. I didn’t, however, give you permission to be taken.” I'll give my heated fur blanket to someone who can tell me what this means...does that mean he gave them permission to rape or attempt to rape her? When did we stop cutting off oxygen supplies to people like this and start thinking they were cute?
"That’s what it means to be a valkyrie. You don’t submit. You don’t give up. You don’t bend to the will of another. You just… don’t. It doesn’t matter what’s right or wrong, rational or irrational, smart or stupid. I simply cannot give in to this man." And then she rolls over and submits after an extremely pathetic attempt at a "fight" Lord, if you're listening: kill me
This book was steaming hot garbage and I want to speak to a lawyer.

I love all Kitty Thomas books short or long and although this was on the shorter side it left little to the imagination. Chloe is a Valkyrie and knows one thing. Berserkers arent one to mess with and if you see one, run. But nothing to worry about because as far as she knows, there aren't many around. But when she is up in the air on a plane there is this guy that is very angry and he is speaking in another language and what is he? A berserker. I am not going to say any more because I dont want to spoil it all except... He sees her and he needs her but she wants no part. So its a push and pull the whole time. There is another guy involved though. He isn't an intense rage filled berseker. His name is Cade. And you will see who he is when you read this. (this is not a love triangle)
SO good with SO much hotness for such a small book. I want MORE. 5 STARS AS USUAL FOR KITTY THOMAS!

This was very different from other Kitty Thomas books that I've read. Her other stuff is very dark but this wasn't so dark. I've not been able to enjoy dark romance since I had Covid-19 last year. It hurts my heart. This story had a great ending and I wish that it had been longer.

Audible Review: I am adding this to my already ebook review for the Berserker - audible.
Kitty Thomas nailed it on the narrators that she chose! The narrators are Troy Duran and Lauren Sweet. This is the first time I have heard either of them.
I agree with Kitty Thomas that Troy was absolute perfection for the narration of the BERSERKER with that husky voice. And, not that Lauren didn’t do a great job too, she DID!
I am not the kind of person that will read books over and over. But I am so happy that I listened to this book! How do I make this worth more than a 5 stars?

Berserker is a standalone Fantasy romance by another of my favorite dark romance authors!!! Oh boy, I loved this novella! Cade is the Berserker, the Berserker is Cade. The Berserker is living in Cade’s body. Cade never knows when the Berserker is going to show up or even let him out. Like the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Chloe is a Valkyrie. She has been living as a human and her mother told her not to get involved with a Berserker. To run the other way if she ever sees one. Of course that isn’t what Chloe did.
I think Kitty Thomas can write anything and write it well! I loved reading the Berserker. Something a little different from her and I LOVE it!!! Here’s hoping there will be more!!!

This is a fun and very steamy read that I readily devoured in one sitting. It's novella length but still managed to pack in plenty of story.
I adored Chloe, she was ever the pragmatist with reactions that felt totally believable. Cade the man would normally have been too sweet for my tastes, but he was the perfect balance to Cade the Berserker. The diametric contrast of those two extremes of personality provided a wonderful foil against which the emotional turbulence of the story shone. It isn't easy to convey a believable depth of feeling in a shorter read, but the author did an amazing job of it here.
The story held my attention from start to finish and overall I really enjoyed it. The ending felt rushed though. The conflict barely started, and definitely not examined in any depth, was over in the blink of an eye and I didn't find myself convinced by Chloe's feelings. However it did lead to a very satisfying conclusion to the story.
The world building, whilst not complex, was sufficient to both add depth to the story and to leave the reader able to understand the setting.

I've been a fan of Kitty Thomas since I read Perfection last year. She knows how to pack a punch in a novella that leaves you breathless and wanting more. You are pulled into an extremely fascinating chase that only has one provocative ending.
Chloe is a valkyrie and has always been told to run from berserkers if she ever met one. Unfortunately, you can't run far on an airplane so she stops a volatile situation that could get everyone killed. Doing that, she has sealed her fate with Cade who is possessed by a very angry berserker. Once she touched him, she became marked for his mate. Now he just has to catch her.
There are actually three beings in this book: Chloe, Cade, and the Berserker. Cade's body is a vessel for the Berserker. My heart aches for Cade who is a noble and kind being who is possessed by an angry and vicious entity that only Chloe can tame. I love Chloe's funny inner musings as she tries to deal with an inescapable fate. Her attraction to Cade is separate from her lust for the Berserker and when she finally accepts her destiny it is a fitting end.

Berserker is a fun novella by Kitty Thomas based on the Norse mythology. I really enjoyed this story and my only complaint is that I didn't want it to end. We have a reluctant Valkyrie who'd been taught that should she ever encounter a Berserker, she should run for her life. As you can imagine, she does happen to run into one and so begins their fast and steamy "courtship". I really enjoyed the humor in this book. I've seen this side of Kitty Thomas' writing come out more and more recently and I've really enjoyed this. She was also able to make impressive use of the Norse mythology, especially since this is a novella. As you can expect from a Kitty book, there's a dose of kink and some dark undertones, though this isn't as dark as most of Ms. Thomas' work. Overall, I loved the story and hope to meet more characters from this world in the future.

Okay, so this is actually my first Kitty Thomas book. This was a short fast-paced book about claiming between a newly-made-berserker and valkyrie. No worries, the book gave us a general explanation on a few of paranormal beings in this universe. And for berserker and valkyrie, they're apparently fated, mates. So, the H marked our h his mate; but she was reluctant on it. And so the chase began.
The story was definitely steamy. The tension and smokiness of the steamy sexy scenes were through the roof. It was definitely HOT. The claiming was more primal with a tinge of BDSM. There's a bit of dubcon too (Am not sure, since it was a bit ambiguous with the mating pull and all). All in all, it was a HEA. Well, it should be since the mating was forever kinda mating.

Kitty has long been a favorite author of mine. Her books can do no wrong. I may not connect with every one the same way, but her writing is top notch and her storytelling is some of the best out there.
This book ranks very high in my favorites though! Our family follows Norse traditions quite a bit so having her blend some of that into her book was a draw, but the characters were excellent. I loved watching Chloe grow and embrace herself and the shift in her world. I loved the dichotomy in Cade.
My only complaint is I want more! However, that is a complaint I have often, as she builds such gripping worlds I don't want to leave them. This is a great read and how can you deny the allure of that cover?!

i thoroughly enjoyed this novella! Kitty mentioned in the author notes that this isn’t necessarily her ‘darkest’ story but it doesn’t in any way take away from the book. if you’re a fan of other books from this author, i promise you’ll love it. i absolutely LOVED that it included norse mythology and Kitty put the perfect dark romance spin to it. you really felt like you got to know Chloe on a personal level - i was giggling from the get go because she was so relatable and i’d definitely have the same thoughts if i was stuck on a plane with a berserker. i’ve not ready many books like this and i already can’t wait to see what’s in store for more adventures in the valkyrie world
