Miss Ashford Investigates #3

When novice detective Atlanta Ashford is whisked away to Italy by her friendly race car driver Raoul Lemont, she anticipates a happy holiday under the Tuscan sun. But a chance meeting on the Orient Express with Italian heiress Catherina Lanetti leads to a party invitation.... and front row seats for a mysterious murder. with their new friend under suspicion, Atlanta and Raoul set to work out who really killed Catherina's father.

Set in the 1930s. with plenty of suspects to choose from, this quick and fun read is a great addition to the series. What was supposed to be a relaxing holiday with her friend Raoul Lemont soon turns into a murder investigation. The story is told from Atlanta's point of view. The characters are well developed, and I love the will they, won't they relationship that Atlanta and Raoul share. The story is descriptively written. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I love this cosy murder mystery series.

I would like to thank #Netgalley #HarperCollinsUK #OneMoreChapter and the author #VivianConroy for my ARC of #AFatalEncounterInTuscany in exchange for an honest review.

1930’s murder amongst the vines!

Atlanta Ashford’s relationship with racing car driver Raoul Lemont (he later declares he’s Italian by heart, not birth) is somewhat of an unknown, punctuated with Atlanta’s inner moonings of does he like me or not. Atlanta seems to be attracted to Raoul but is unsure, or scared of, his responses. Sometimes she’s looking forward to his company, other times his perceived chauvinism annoys her, or the prejudices of others frustrate her, particularly when he’s referred to over her because he’s male. It’s like Atlanta’s metaphorically pulling the petals of daisies to uncover her feelings, with jealousy only a nanosecond away.
Anyway Atlanta’s decided to take time out from detecting and go on a holiday with Raoul, as a ‘travelling companion’, (Atlanta’s unsure of what that means) motoring through his beloved Tuscany, stopping off at little towns and inns along the way. No investigating! Purely and simply a restful holiday.
They’re taking the Orient Express to Simplon Pass where Raoul’s arranged for a car. Aboard the train they meet an heiress whose father, Cosimo Lanetti owns a palazzo surrounded by vineyards. Atlanta’s persuaded by Catharina to join her there for Cosimo’s eightieth birthday celebrations. Raoul is not sympatico with this change.
Of course someone dies and Atlanta finds herself thrust into the situation.
Raoul had wanted to avoid the party but is happy to assist Atalanta. The details of the death are finely wrought. Catharina becomes the major suspect. Cosimo’s Will opens up several avenues to explore.
I must say that by now Atlanta’s relationship with Raoul is annoying me even more intensely.
I’m not convinced of the chemistry hinted at between them. Furthermore I’m not fully sold on this episode of Atlanta bravely solving murder amongst the vines of Tuscany. I hope the series doesn’t unraval as Atlanta sashays around Europe, presumably with Monsieur Lemont, to become a travelogue with murder always on the list.
I do object to Atlanta being seen as channeling a cross between Agatha Christie and Julie Caplan. Agatha—a resounding No! Julie—a maybe!
Still I must confess I’ll be interested to see where the next book takes us.

Many thanks to the author and publisher.

3.5 ⭐️

I think this is my favourite one of the series! Atalanta’s character is always enjoyable, and I have come to appreciate the juxtaposition between her more hesitant & careful manner, and Raoul’s carefree personality.

Overall, I think that cosy mysteries have a tendency to get rather tedious, so I don’t think that they will ever rank amongst my favourite genres - but this one has been most enjoyable. 💛

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany is the third in the lively Miss Ashford Investigates series, jam packed with atmospheric descriptions from the Orient Express to period clothing to glorious Tuscany.

The 1930s are glamorous and glitzy. Atalanta Ashford has recently come into oodles of money but remains humble and thoughtful. Professional car racer Raoul is wealthy, handsome and practical. As good friends, why not enjoy their wealth whilst taking a break from busyness? Raoul plans a European trip, packs and "kidnaps" his friend as a surprise. On the Orient Express the adventures begin. The sleuth pair meets Catharina of the infamous Lanetti family who invites them to a birthday party at her home. Trouble brews amongst the Lanetti family members and one is killed. Turns out several suspects had motives. All have secrets.

Atalanta and Raoul use their deduction skills and experience, inveigle and question. Their searching takes them through Tuscany. Descriptions transported me there in less than a heartbeat.

Writing is witty, bright and snappy and the mysteries are fun. But my favourite parts are spending time with the characters in Italy and catching glimpses of blushes and tender moments. Historical Fiction fans ought to become immersed in this series.

My sincere thank you to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for providing me an early digital copy of this delightful novel.

All opinions are my own.

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany is the third instalment in the Mish Ashford Investigates series, but if you haven’t read the previous ones and would nevertheless like to accompany Miss Ashford to Tuscany, no worries, you’ll be able to jump in here. Each mystery stands on its own and while earlier cases are referred to, there are no spoilers. Note that you will want to read the previous books after finishing this one, so you might as well start at the beginning, just saying.

The story is told from the POV of Atalanta Ashford and is set in the 1930s. Atalanta is a feisty young woman, who has taken over her grandfather’s unofficial sleuthing business. It would seem that wherever she goes, murder follows and it’s up to her to solve the murder mystery, Hercule Poirot style.

Lately, Atalanta has been so busy that her friend (and possibly a bit of a love interest) Raoul, a wealthy race car driver, decides she needs a break and whisks her away to Italy. What could be more relaxing than a sunny holiday among the Tuscan vineyards? But alas, tragedy (or rather: a killer) strikes and Atalanta won’t rest until, among the plethora of suspects, she has figured out whodunnit, and why.

I do love Atalanta and sleuthing along with her, and I love it even more that she takes me to all the best places in Europe! I have the fondest memories of Tuscany, and it was such a pleasure to relive them thanks to the vivid and evocative writing.

I always enjoy Vivian Conroy’s historical cosy murder mysteries and A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany was no exception, I had a great time with it and I binged the whole latter half cos I just had to know what was what. I can’t wait for Atalanta’s next outing, which will be in Salzburg! Recommended to fans of cosy murder mysteries.

Thanks to One More Chapter and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

Another enigmatic mystery from the pen of Vivian Conroy - who never disappoints!

In this third in series, Atalanta Ashford is whisked away on a holiday to see Italy by her friend Raoul Lemont. Starting off on the luxurious Orient Express, they meet Italian heiress Catharina Lanetti, leading to a birthday party invitation which neither of them are keen to accept. However, they find themselves at the party witnessing the murder of Catharina's father, Their relaxing road trip through Tuscany is put on hold as the amateur detectives find themselves on a bit of a busman's holiday.

Having missed the first in this series, I struggled slightly with the second but this one was like coming home. The author weaves a fine tale of mystery and intrigue and with plenty going on there is lots to consider. Who to trust? Well, one thing's for sure, they are better detectives than I'll ever be! Beautifully written and thoroughly enjoyable, this easily merits all five sparkling stars!

I liked this book, set in Italy in the 1930s, one of my favorite places to visit. Atalanta Ashford is a budding detective traveling with her friend, Raoul Lemont, a race car driver. On the Oriental Express, they meet Catharina Lanetti, the daughter of a very wealthy landowner. When her father is murdered, Catharina is one of the top suspects. However, there are plenty of other people with motives and Atalanta and Raoul join forces to discover the truth.

I’m about over the Raoul romance like a lot of people. The mystery plots are good and I like the premise but I’m over her “does he like me?” “Oh he doesn’t mean it” “oh we’re just friends but I’m jealous” subplot. I’ll try the next book but if that’s still up in the air, I’m done because it makes Atalanta an idiot. And id rather read more of her finding out about her family and Renard.

They first have champagne on the top of the Eiffel tower and then catch the orient express he’s taking her to Tuscany his home away from home she is nervous about the feelings she is starting to have for him but quickly puts them away to enjoy the nice trip whether it be as friends or something more. When they go to have dinner the dining cart is full but soon after arriving he accidentally bumped into the table of a woman name Catherine Who invites them to have dinner with her once they sit and start talking they learned her father owns one of the biggest vineyards in Tuscany enRaul is very familiar with her family and they are wine but soon she tells them more than they need to know about her step brothers and how her dad is disappointed in her and wants her to marry and take over the Vineyard and oh yes her fathers 60th birthday party is this weekend and she wants them to go it’s a masquerade party where everyone’s going to dress up like someone popular from Tuscany although Atalanta isn’t so happy with their new friend due to her flirting with Raul she can’t help but be interested in going. This is where someone is poisoned and a missing family member shows up and Mrs. Ashford is on the case with Raul yet again. I know I love a book when I go to review it and want to tell the whole story which is what’s happening with the third book in the mist Ashford mysteries I don’t read many cozy mysteries but I love these books the international flair the growing romance the LOL moments all makes for a great reading experience and one I wish was on audio but nevertheless whether it’s on Kindle or audio I love it still an all it has a great plot talented riding and a storyline that keeps you turning the pages I absolutely love those authors cozy mysteries and definitely think it is a five star read!
I also think the letters from her grandfather is such a nice touch it’s too bad there’s not opportunity for more of those or a story surrounding them I think that’s so cool I received this book from NetGalley and a publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Previously reviewed on The Good, The Bad, and The Unread:

It seems that Atalanta Ashford is another of those protagonists who can’t go anywhere without someone finding a dead body immediately after her arrival. Even popping out for afternoon tea close to home leads to her being asked to solve smaller mysteries. So it’s a mixed blessing when her racing driver friend Raoul Lemont conspires with her faithful butler (inherited along with her newfound fortune from her long-lost grandfather) to take her on holiday to Tuscany. The pair board the Orient Express together and are soon accosted by an Italian heiress cum adventuress, who is returning home for her estranged father’s 60th birthday party. Raoul is aware of Catharina Lanetti and her wealthy, dysfunctional family and tries to warn Atalanta off Catharina’s invitation for them to join her at the party. Atalanta is intrigued, however, and so Raoul reluctantly agrees to accompany her to the Lanetti palazzo and vineyards.

Over dinner on the Orient Express, Catharina fills them in on her family history, which does little to assuage Raoul’s concerns. These are then exacerbated by a set-to between Catharina and her half-brother, who also happens to be on the train. Nonetheless, our protagonists collect another of Raoul’s cars in Milan and head to the palazzo. They receive a relatively warm welcome but are taken aback by Catharina’s unconventional birthday gift for her father, with connections to the infamous Medici family. More scandals unfold as the evening progresses, and then Catharina’s father is found dead in circumstances that seem to implicate Catharina as his killer.

The investigation is immediately seized by the local retired police chief, raising Atalanta’s suspicions, especially when Catharina is arrested with little in the way of evidence beyond the circumstantial. Atalanta and Raoul decide to conduct their own investigation to try to exonerate Catharina and discover that every family member and most of the other guests had a motive for killing their host. They also learn several guests are not who they claim to be, although the one supposed imposter may, in fact, be telling the truth about his identity. The reading of their host’s will makes matters no clearer, and Atalanta gets only a little inspiration from her grandfather’s letters, but eventually the pair are able to solve the crime, along with another that occurred many years earlier.

I enjoyed this adventure and managed to figure out one part of the linked whodunits, if not all of them. I also liked following Atalanta’s methods for working out what happened in each mystery. I could maybe have done with a little more delving into the letters from Atalanta’s grandfather and some more development of the relationship between Atalanta and Raoul, but hopefully both of these will be satisfied in the next book.

"What if...?" So many "What ifs..." in this book. What if Atalanta Ashford had refused handsome race car driver Raoul Lemont's invitation? What if they hadn't taken the, wow, Orient Express? What if they hadn't met Catharina Lanetti at breakfast that morning? What if they hadn't accepted the troubled woman's invitation to the elaborate, upscale birthday party for her somewhat estranged father, Cosimo? What if....well, you get my drift.

Atalanta's mind is seemingly always racing, taking wild twists and turns during even the most mundane circumstances. While her mind soon turns to murder, initially they're focused on her relationship, which she isn't even sure is a relationship, with Raoul. He does have a way of popping up unexpectedly so, what if....no, let's not go there. Let's just say that she's drawn to him but won't quite admit it. Remember, this story is set in the much slower days of the 1930s.

Needless to say, they arrive for the party and Atalanta, who still isn't accustomed to her inherited status of wealth, is awed by the surroundings. She is equally astounded at the tensions and power struggles within the family. While Cosimo's late first wife seems almost saintly by description, second wife Melina is lovely but, umm, abrasive. The brothers Lorenzo and Giovanni dislike each other and both want control of the business when their father passes. And, pass he does. Who kills Cosimo? Was Catharina's present to him a hint? Is it true people die where she goes? Could the brothers have tired of waiting for their chance to lead? Could Catharina be next? How long do some people hold a grudge? What if....oops, back to that again. But, enough hints.

While the plot unfolds slower than I've grown accustomed to of late, the unfolding is perfect for the time and setting. The author does a wonderful job painting the scene for us, the people, customs, lush colors and scenery, much while Raoul drives leisurely through the countryside, stopping in small villages and pubs, and introducing Atalanta to his Italy. So, don't rush through the interludes as they're lovely snapshots of the times and places. As for the mystery itself, it held my attention and made me hungry for some sightseeing. Thanks#NetGalley and #HarperCollinsUK - #OneMoreChapter for inviting me along for Raoul and Atalanta's lovely excursion. After that hint in the last sentence, must admit I'm curious to see where this is going.

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany by Vivian Conroy is another Miss Ashford Investigates novel, featuring Atalanta Ashford and her sometime cohort, Raoul Lemont, the famous race car driver. Raoul had just appeared outside the hotel where she had been hoping to take tea, along with luggage, seen to by her butler, Renard. The two men agreed that she needed some down time and so Raoul was here to make that happen. She didn’t discover where they were going until they arrived in time to board the famed Orient Express. They are not taking it all the way to the end but only to Tuscany. While dining they met a young woman called Catharina Lanetti, who has invited them to a party in celebration of her her father’s sixtieth birthday, and to spend some time at his villa. Both of them feel somewhat negative about the invitation but for different reasons. They plan to let her know their decision as they leave the train the next morning, but before they could catch up to her they see her punch a man in the nose. It turns out to be her brother, but confirms their suspicions that they should avoid this family.

Atalanta is an interesting character. Until she inherited her grandfather’s fortune, she taught in a Swiss boarding school for girls. Now she is wealthy and has also been encouraged to continue his habit of trying to help other people when they need it, like finding a murderer, for example. He detecting skills are being honed with practice, the help of Renard, letters her grandfather left her, and by Raoul. She isn’t sure what to make of Raoul. Are they just friends or is there more? She is never sure, but knows how much she enjoys his company. They are formidable characters, creative and determined. Both well written characters. This is a family mystery with many prongs, going back for years. Unraveling the whole thing helped with solving the murder. It was an enjoyable mystery taking place in the still formal 1930s and in a wonderful setting. Conroy takes us to a different place and time and makes the journey very enjoyable.

I would like to thank Netgalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for an advance copy of A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany, the third novel to feature Miss Atalanta Ashford, a private detective to Europe’s rich and famous, set in 1930.

Atalanta’s friend, racing driver Raoul Lemont, is taking her to Tuscany for a relaxing holiday, when they meet Catharina Lanetti on the Orient Express. She promptly invites them to her father’s sixtieth birthday party in the palatial family home, only for him to be murdered during the party. Catharina is under suspicion so Atalanta has to navigate her way through several suspects and motives to save the day.

I thoroughly enjoyed A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany, which is a fun, light hearted adventure in beautiful surroundings. It is told entirely from Atalanta’s point of view, so the reader can investigate alongside her and attempt to find a coherent narrative in amongst all the snippets of information she picks up. Not that I managed to.

Atalanta is new to both wealth and investigating, so the novel combines her enjoyment of all these new experiences with her more mundane day job. The wealthy setting gives the novel glamour, especially as seen through her inexperienced eyes, and that adds to the fun. The detecting is more idiosyncratic with Atalanta, ably assisted by Raoul, asking questions, formulating theories and generally poking around until the aha moment strikes and she is able to enact a Christie-esque denouement. This one involves all sorts of elements including a dysfunctional family, a twisted victim, old crimes and new developments. It is complicated to pull it all together and the author does it well.

I like Atalanta with her mixture of pragmatism and naïveté and I’ve enjoyed her friendship with Raoul. She likes him romantically, but isn’t confident enough to do something about it. After all he’s an attractive racing car driver and she’s a former schoolteacher. The jealousy of other women is starting to wear, so it’s time for him to declare his obvious interest.

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany is a fun read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

I received an ARC from Harper Collins, One More Chapter and NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Genre: Mystery, Historical Mystery, Suspense
Spice Level: Low
Blood & Gore Level: Low

A FATAL ENCOUNTER IN TUSCANY is my first mystery by Vivian Conroy.

I loved the backdrop of Italy and the connection to Paris. (Definitely gives me inspiration to travel to Europe again.) The author gives the reader enough background to know the story and history of the main character, Atalanta Ashford and the reason she works as an investigator. Her friend, Raoul Lemont, a race car driver, is the impetus for her vacation in Tuscany—to show her his adopted homeland. He also has women throwing themselves at him. This leads to Atalanta questioning his truthfulness.

At times, I just wanted them to have a solid conversation and resolve their questions. And couldn't I get a couple of kisses out of their relationship? (Yes—I think most books are better with a kiss.)

The cast of characters is large, but each person is unique and easy to keep track of. They're over-the-top: controlling, sneaky, liars, Machiavellian, and richer than Hades—at least the father and owner of the vineyard is wealthy, and the others are dependent upon him.

As with any mystery, I want to see if I can solve it before the sleuth. I was just moments before Atalanta in this book. And that makes me want to read another book by Conroy.

There were a couple of times where I didn't feel like our sleuths followed up in a logical manner. For example, if you see someone tuck a paper away, wouldn't you want to check on that immediately instead of waiting? Or if someone is distraught, do you believe the reaction or assume it's genuine? Thus, following up with that person to determine where they stand. I'm hoping this is vague enough not to give anything away but to understand that I wanted the plot a little tighter and logical.

Even though this is a murder mystery, I consider it fairly cozy—which happens to be my favorite types of mysteries.

I was surprised—in a good way—with how everything shook out.

Yes! I recommend this book.

Happy reading!

I received a copy of this title from the publisher; all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany is the third title in the Miss Ashford Investigates series but can easily be read as a standalone. After getting wrapped up in her investigation work, Atalanta is whisked away for a surprise trip by her friend Raoul for a visit Tuscany. While traveling from France to Italy aboard the Orient Express, the pair meet up with Catharina Lanetti, daughter of a wealthy and influential owner of a winery. She invites them to her father's 60th birthday party. The next day, while getting off the train, they see Catharina punch her half-brother in the nose after accusing him of slipping a threatening note under her compartment's door. After spending an afternoon seeing Tuscany through Raoul's eyes, the pair somewhat reluctantly decides to attend the birthday party.

During the party, Cosimo (Catharina's father) is found dead, and Catharina is accused of murder and taken into custody, Atalanta and Raoul find themselves as her only help for freedom. The Lanetti family has a history of secrets and complicated relationships. Was it one of Catharina's half-brothers who were kept on a tight leash by their father finally reaching a breaking point, her step-mother who has always been in the shadow of her husband's first wife who was tragically murdered, or the alleged long lost missing first born son? Is there a connection between this death and the other tragedies that have befallen the family and can Atalanta solve the mystery to free Catharina?

I'm really enjoying this series as Atalanta is such a smart and enjoyable character. Each book has featured a unique well crafted mystery. I found this one to be the best one yet and it definitely kept me guessing on if the events were connected. I am hoping in the next book to get to know more about Atalanta and to see a bit of advancement of the potential romance between Raoul and Atalanta. I hope that this series has many more titles in the works.

I hadn't read the first two books in this series and I regret that. While Conroy is an adept writer and put some information in to catch us up on characters without info dumping, I really wish I had known more about Atalanta Ashford and her sleuthing abilities.

But we meet her in this book as she is solving the mystery of a missing ring. Having read Sherlock Holmes, she is very easily able to find where the ring went, riling Inspector Deriot who seems to be a rival of sorts. Or maybe she is more accurately a thorn in his side.
But she won't be a thorn for long as her friend (?) Raoul is "abducting" her for a grand adventure, a ride on the Orient Express. It is there that she and Raoul meet Catharina Lanetti who is going back to Italy to celebrate her father's birthday. Her family is... interesting, to say the least. The patriarch worships the Machiavellis and his schemes are no less convoluted. Catharina invites Atalanta and Raoul to join the celebration. While Atalanta wonders whether this is a set up, she is still drawn to the Lanettie compound where, as predicted, Catharina's father is killed. She, as the person who has come back the most recently is blamed. But is she really the killer?
There is a LOT of drama and untold secrets in this book. I think, having read the first two books, I might be more invested in the story but I do feel like Conroy is setting up Atalanta and Raoul to be more than friends but the chemistry isn't there yet.

Three and a half stars rounded up for Goodreads

Originally posted on my blog Nonstop Reader.

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany is the third historical cozy mystery by Vivian Conroy to feature amateur high society discreet inquiry agent Miss Atalanta Ashford. Released 13th April 2023 by HarperCollins on their One More Chapter imprint, it's 369 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

This is a well written destination mystery very much in the style of the Golden Age; more Marsh/Sayers than Christie. It's full of well-heeled high society characters, moderately witty repartee, and gentility. The plot is straightforward with a satisfying denouement and resolution. Although it's the 3rd book in the series, it is self contained and works well as a standalone.

With four books extant in the series, it would make a good choice for a long weekend binge or buddy read. The language is clean and the crimes are cozy acceptable and not bloody.

Four stars. Well written and engaging.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I was delighted to be offered an early read of the third book in the Miss Ashford Investigates series, having thoroughly enjoyed Atalanta’s sleuthing in Santorini. I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed this book just as much! I should add that each book can be read as a stand alone as the background to Atalanta and Raoul is succinctly recapped at the beginning of the story.
Invited on a secretly planned trip by the dashing Raoul Lemont, Atalanta finds herself aboard the spectacular Orient Express destined for Tuscany. A chance encounter with a young woman in the dining car brings an invitation to the birthday celebration of wealthy Cosimo Lanetti. Intrigued by Catharina, the young woman, Atalanta can’t resist attending as her intuition seems to be telling her she must. And so our detective duo find themselves in the middle of yet another murder mystery. The cast of suspects is plentiful, with each having possible motives and I really enjoyed trying to solve the mystery alongside Atalanta. The descriptions of the Orient Express and the beautiful Tuscan countryside are charming. Another super cosy mystery that certainly kept me turning the pages!
Thanks to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and of course Vivian Conroy for the arc in exchange for a review.

Travel back to the nineteen thirties with Atalanta Ashford once more
This intrepid sleuth is going to Tuscany to explore.
Whisked away by Raoul on the Orient Express train
Hoping a break from detective work will pertain.

A chance encounter, an invitation, too!
Will they attend? What should they do?
A party, a death, and a retired police chief on the case...
Why do so many things seem out of place?

A new acquaintance under suspicion, what should they do-
Keep quiet and leave or investigate, too?
With a dysfunctional family, full of drama and hate,
Can they help solve the case before it is too late?

With so many suspects, motives and secrets, too,
Can Atalanta trust Raoul and together find what's true?
A story filled with drama and mystery,
Linking together with past family history.

An engaging read and great addition to the series, too,
A book I don't hesitation to recommend here to you!

But with more than half a dozen suspects – all with compelling motive – Atalanta may just be facing her toughest case yet!
This is the third outing for Atalanta & could easily be read on its own. A delightful read, the descriptions are very well done & I liked the attention to detail. An entertaining quick read with plenty of suspects, twists & turns plus the burning question about will there be a romance between Atalanta & Raoul? I look forward to the next instalment

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany is a cosy mystery read that you can easily finish in a day. Please leave it to Vivian Conroy to paint vivid imagery, luring the reader to a faraway land, going way back in time. This book possesses a well-paced plot centred around deceit, revenge, secrets and payback. The author has etched her signature style in revealing parts of the puzzle along the way with a practical yet, surprising ending. The linear point of view (Atlanta Ashford's) works exceptionally well as our protagonist is sharp, clever and a keen observer. Her interactions with Rauol are steeped with inquiry, reasoning and secret longing.
I look forward to seeing how Atlanta's relationship with Rauol evolves. Do not skip this fantastic series if you enjoy cosy mysteries, amateur sleuths, family secrets and beautiful landscapes.

Thank you NetGally & HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, for giving me an ARC. This honest review is left voluntarily.

3.5 I think. This series is easy to read, a cosy mystery in the style of Agatha Christie, Miss Fisher. I enjoy the exotic locales and I find that I can easily picture the people and places. I like that the mysteries are solved quickly, and without too much unnecessary pfaffing about. Sometimes it is nice to just read a straight to the point, simple but enjoyable novel, especially when you need something that you don't have to think about in a complex way. I look forward to the upcoming book in November. I'm loving that Raoul is a race car driver - as a Formula One fanatic, I am totally onboard! (I pretty much just imagine Carlos Sainz Jr!) I do hope that the "friendship" between Atalanta and Raoul is explored in more detail soon. I like a good slow burn but this is book three so it would be good to see some movement in the next book! I think this series would make a great tv show too, an old school British drama! The 1930s setting makes for wonderful potential for costumes!

Atalanta and her friend, race car driver Raoul, are travelling to Tuscany on the Orient Express on holiday when they meet Catharina Lanetti and end up being invited to a party at her father's house. When they attend they become involved in her family's infighting and a murder.
I must admit that I was kept guessing all the way to the end of the book with the final outcome a total surprise. The Lanetti family were certainly not the type of people that I normally associate with and certainly wouldn't want to. The relationship between Atalanta and Raoul is still full of twists and turns, but the book would lose some of its sparks if they became closer. Certainly one for those who enjoy twisted storylines in their murder mysteries.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influenced my review of the book.

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany is the first book I’ve read in the Miss Ashford Investigates series by Vivian Conroy. It was so delightful that I’ll be sure to read the books that follow! Though there aren't any spoilers from the first books, the author includes plenty of background information to catch you up on who the characters are, how they have come to know each other, and how Miss Ashford became involved in investigating.

In this case, Miss Atalanta Ashford heads on an unexpected vacation with her friend Raoul Lamont. He sweeps into the hotel where she’s having tea telling her he’s got everything planned and that her bags are packed, and they’re heading to Tuscany via the Orient Express. I don’t know about you, but I’d be all in! Though Atalanta is an heiress, Raoul has his own fortune from racing cars. And he’s paying. Yep, I’d be in. Though the two aren’t in a romantic relationship, Atalanta ponders pursuing one…eventually. In other words, yes, this is a completely clean cozy mystery book that won’t make you blush! She doesn’t expect to get caught up in another murder mystery; but, of course, she does!

I highly recommend A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany. It is a charming cozy mystery, set during a time period about which I enjoy reading (the 1930s). The book is filled with well-developed and a diverse cast of characters. The mystery is puzzling but easy enough to solve if you follow the clues. Furthermore, it takes place in a setting I would adore visiting! I’m looking forward to seeing what Miss Ashford investigates next.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

A cosy crime mystery that had me riveted from the start.

September 1930 and Miss Atalanta Ashford is whisked away for a sightseeing holiday, with her friend, the dashing good looking Raoul Lemont.
Will all go to plan for their Tuscany break?

I stepped back in time to 1930, thoroughly enjoying this wonderful cosy crime mystery book.
A selection of characters had me guessing this way and that as I tried to work out who had carried out the crime?
Atalanta and Raoul, friends and sleuthing partners, are very likeable characters.
It was a lovely good fun book to read, and I delighted in reading about their travels and Tuscany.
I look forward to reading more books from the author.

Many thanks to NetGalley, the Author and Publisher for an advanced e-book copy. Opinions of this book are entirely my own.

Former teacher at an exclusive girls' school, Atalanta Ashford, becomes a female investigator as part of an unexpected inheritance. Atalanta’s friend, racing driver Raoul Lemont, encourages her to go with him to Italy for a vacation. They travel on the Orient Express and meet an odd woman with what appears to be a very contentious family. Then comes the murder of the paterfamilias. Let the sleuthing begin (even if the apparently retired police chief declares the murderer without convincing legal evidence).
If you enjoy stream of consciousness in a historical soap opera you will adore this book as much as I did.
I requested and received an EARC from HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter via NetGalley. Thank you!

I enjoyed the previous 2 books, but this felt as if it was rushed out with insufficient editing. An initial gabbled account of previous adventures. Italics and normal font used in the wrong places (eg, second part of the letter) Names just not Italian. Catharina (‘th’ does not exist in Italian), Thomasso (ditto), Marcelo, Danielo …should be Caterina, Tomaso, Marcello & Daniele/Danilo. Such unnecessary mistakes. The plot is nonsense. No retired police chief could take control. So many places where a good editor would have replaced a word for one less frequently used. I did finish it, but was most unimpressed with the lack of consistency in type setting (Regular/italics) and the plot. A good editor could have dealt with a lot of these frustrations.

I have not read the previous books in the series and picked it up randomly when out shopping. What I liked about the book is that even if you haven't read the previous books, you're not missing any context.

The book is set in the 1930's and follows Atalanta Ashford, wherever she goes, murder seems to follow.

A Fatal Encounter in Tuscany truly transported me into the story, it felt like I was watching it all happen around me.

One thing I didn't like was the Raoul romance... I don't think I had much context there since I hadn't started from the beginning but seems a lot of people agree with me there.

Only reason it took me so long to finish the book is because I stupidly left it behind when I left the city for a week. It was on my mind the whole time though!

This is a fast, easy read full of adventure, family drama, and hidden secrets. I love Atalanta’s character. She is intelligent, observant, amiable, and can solve a mystery like Sherlock Holmes. I also appreciate how her butler always adds a letter from her deceased grandfather that helps her solve the mystery or in this case, four mysteries. There were so many suspects with the perfect motive it was hard to narrow it down to one person. This made it a great read for me because it challenged my brain to solve the puzzle.

Thank you NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, and One More Chapter for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
