Picking up the pieces after another devastating betrayal, Gunnar aims to change the cutthroat city of Thailen for good. If that means outsmarting a powerful sorceress and starting a guild war, then, so be it.
Meanwhile, Em holds a secret to Gunnar's past that could alter everything he thought he knew about Pantheon Online. Soon, Gunnar must reckon between the truth and his reality in this new world. His decision will change everything.
I loved this conclusion to this first trilogy in the Pantheon universe(s). Gunnar is a likable character, and although he doesn't always make the best choices, he is constantly trying to do the right thing, which means he's open to learning more information, listening to his friends, and trying to think strategically about next moves. I like the group of people he has surrounded himself with and the storyline, both in game and out, is intriguing enough to keep me interested. While the author is hoping to expand the story (and I think he's already thinking about the next adventure), I like that he's planning on writing standalone mini-series (trilogies?) so that each one can be read independently (although I would think maybe this should be the first, since it introduces us to the whole concept of Pantheon online) and you get the satisfaction of a complete story arc, but the overall story continues.
Thus, this third story brings everything together satisfyingly, but it definitely leaves me wanting more adventures with Gunnar. Overall, the characters are likable, so you really want to root for them. There is a nice balance of story, humor, action, and gameplay, and each book in the trilogy is a decent number of pages (~350-500), with the total trilogy feeling like it's just the right length.
I don't read that many books in this genre, but for me, this is a good example of the genre. I have since bought the audiobook version for each of these books and will go back and listen from the beginning. I'm very curious what the narrators will sound like vs. what I was hearing in my head while reading these books.
I received an advance review copy from the author for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow! This series should be picked up by a streaming service! I have really enjoyed this rollercoaster ride! You get to know many dynamic characters and watch them grow and develop and even feel you know many lesser ones. This series is unlike any I have read before, a lot of action but it is not confusing, you want to know how it connects, and what you thought you knew many times turns out to be wrong! Many twists and turns....that is all I will say, read this series and I do believe that we may see some of theses characters again.
The stakes keep getting ever higher, the battles more dangerous, and the fast-paced action-packed story with all its unpredictable twists and imaginative turns keeps the reader intrigued and entertained.
You thought you knew where it all was heading? Sure, the great Launch of the VR game, eh? Leilani's plans to take over, 'Gunnar's predicament, Em and Alex, how to save a mage and the day and all that ... But turns out there is so. much. more to it all, from what's really going on with our hero's assumed reality to the larger scale, schemes behind the scenes, not to forget new bizarre opponents and more or less unlikely allies, the scope of what the author has come up with is great as well as told in an entertaining and gripping way.
If you enjoyed the earlier books in this series, you'll surely read this one with great enthusiasm and won't be disappointed. With the variety of characters and events and everything looming in the background there is never a boring moment. Quite a ride! Also nice to know where the Nighthawks got their name )
An excellent LitRPG adventure. Straight into action with many gory battles, loyalty, deceit, love and revelations. I liked Gunnar's way of thinking and the way he follows through with them. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily .
Great read 5* plenty of action from start to finish. Gunnar is way smarter than he seems which together with his allies makes for an interesting and engaging read. Well recommended for any Lit/RPG fans, or anyone who likes fantasy sword and sorcery.
The last few chapters are pretty darn good. Fifty percent through the theme changes from Gunner being the MC to Em being the MC. Most of the fight for the town I skimmed, it got really boring. The book actually is mostly boring.
Once again Gunnar shows us how he fights for what’s right. Full of action, each turn of the page draws us closer to how this fight will end. Definitely not disappointed.
