This is a small book with a great amount of facts, figures and photos. Our Civil War ( 1861-1865 ) had a number of firsts. First practical machine gun/ First repeating rifle used in battle/ First extensive use of trenches and field fortifications/ first use of portable telegraph units on a battlefield/ First photos taken during combat/ First Medal of Honor given to a American soldier. these and may more took place during this great war between the states. Also a number of people who became famous after this war fought in it. I will name a few Lew Williams the author of (Ben Hur ) Andrew Carnegie/ Elias Howe/ George Westinghouse were just a few. All this and many more facts figures and photos can be found in this small book.

This is probably another Tennessee truck stop purchase from 40-ish years ago. This is more of a pamphlet with statistics and pictures that might have been aimed at younger readers back when it was written in the early 60's. It's definitely not The Civil War: A Narrative due to its shortness and lack of writing style, but it has a lot of basic facts that might be good to reference if I ever need to check something.

This small paperback came out before 1961 before the start of the Civil War Centennial/100yr aniv. It was great for the person who had little knowledge of this war. It was basic knowledge of the weapons, uniforms with the numbers of battles, leaders etc.

I love it because of this basic intro into one of the most fasinating historical moments in America's history and I think it is still relevant to this day for any beginner in the Civil War.

Worth the read. It orginally sold for 25cents.
