Review from www.myanimelist.net "Love of Chocolate" -ISBN 9781873877999 It is a different type of manga book as it is both text over 200 pages and lots of manga art, some in full colour, the artist is a girl called Heby Sim more of her work can be seen at the books dedicated website www.chocolatemanga.com. Not sure what age it is aimed at but it covers the life of three very different teenage high school friends and their problems with growing up. The three girls: Abbey Jones, Jeanie Meadows and Jilly Tan have one thing in common and that is a love of chocolate, hence the title. But it is more than that, the chocolate it is more like an addiction with them and that is due a rather special character in the book known as the Companion. If you think life would be fun if you had special abilities this story may make you think again, as Abbey says: she loved her soft long blond hair, she just wished it wouldn't steal chocolates and threaten to bite people!

I got this book quite some years ago because it seemed to align with my interests exactly. A little bit of anime-esque art, chocolate-eating hair, sci-fi and kick-ass ladies in action, and super funny quotes I was having the time of my life reading? I had to have it.

I've never regretted buying a book so much in my life.

I very much hate leaving a bad review, but I feel like it's really necessary for this one. From the rating it has you'd think - much like I did - that it was a fantastic book, and the quotes - the quotes! - were amazing, so I feel obligated to leave this so that the next readers will not be as mislead as I was - or at least, so that they might make a more informed decision. From what I see the rating has also been inflated by the author himself and at least one account with the exact details and image of one of the characters of this book with only a couple more reviews to it, so I'm not sure how many other reviews were actually genuine.

If only every single line in the book didn't read like a one-liner. *Every* line. The characters were weak, their relationships sudden, there was sudden smut out of nowhere - or perhaps not fully out of nowhere, because I went back through a couple pages just to double-check some things and the descriptions are downright fetishistic (there are pages and pages only speaking about breasts and their description and similar topics, and frankly it reads like terrible porn. Ironic, because the characters sometimes describe some things they say in those very words, but it's only directed towards their dialogue, not the prose itself).

Anyone who thinks this would be a great book for a kid based on the summary and the cover proooobably should rethink that - the details elude me after so many years so take this with a grain of salt but . I wouldn't normally mind this if the book gave any indication of being headed that way, or if it was a good scene at *all*, but the way any sexual scenes or discussions were handled was really the rotten cherry on top of a really bad sundae. There weren't details about the age range or the content anywhere I looked either, so let this be your warning. I think there might also have been some dubious consent scenes but don't quote me on that.

Developments are all sudden, the main characters aren't really likeable not do they *feel* like actual characters, transitions are clumsy at best, the editing was very strange indeed, and to say that the writing itself was mediocre is too generous, with descriptions such as "Jilly, the beautiful asian kitty" (paraphrased as I don't remember if it was "asian" or a specific nationality but the other words are accurate and this is referring to one of the three leads). The only thing minimally salvageable about the book itself (to me, at least) was perhaps the concept - I still can't bring myself to dislike alien hive-mind living hair with a fondness for chocolate - and the art.

All in all this is a book I keep hidden and covered in the very back of my library because I'd rather not remember I ever bought it.

During my 3 years of being a manga enthusiast, I've never read an Original English Language manga. Well, I've seen Bizenghast by Legrow but refused to read it since its art wasn't really my type. Tbh, I really like the drawing of the girl in the cover. It's very manga-ish as if the illustrator is a Japanese. And come to think of it, my first look on the cover made me think that it was done by Yuu Watase >.<

At first, I thought the book is all about action or the agent thing…. But as I turned the pages, it change to something hmmph.. unexplainable , maybe science-based…

The story, obviously is unique I haven’t heard of anything like this. It’s also well-written, page-turning actually, I can’t wait to know more what will happen with the characters. ..and by the way, the turn of events are sooo unpredictable….

This book has an air of sci-fi, manga, and action… I love all the illustrations..cool..and awesome..and I also like the fighting stance….made me imagine it..:)

There’s also a bit of sisterhood, friendships and I really hope romance…

At first thought, I think it’s not so wholesome…but then when I realized it’s more of a need, well, actually they want it too, I begin to somehow get used to it…especially when there’s 3 of them…
The hair thing is actually funny, especially when it starts stealing chocolates and dictating them…

I actually thought and until now wish that Abbey would find it in her heart that she loves_____, I guess it would be impossible, since her hair control her…

I hope there’s a sequel with Abbey and ___..hmm…just saying..:)

If you want something unique, with lots of manga, action and sci-fi(since I don’t know what it is)….Grab this book and enjoy it for yourself!
