I took the tour eons ago and loved it, and now am pleased to say that the book is a delight as well. The conspiratorial tone keeps the dense name-dropping interesting, even when Quilligan is describing a pub I've never been to filled with authors I've never heard of. Great pictures, great melding of modern atmosphere and historical context, and a great guide to Dublin's watering holes all in one. (Not that I'd reference this book in any study requiring academic rigor ... Wikipedia is a cited source.)

We spent a wonderful3+ days in Dublin this last summer and went on a literary pub crawl, We didn't visit all the pubs in this book (maybe only 4). But the book makes me want to go back to Dublin. It is a rich mix of travel guide and history of pubs in Ireland, and specifically in Dublin, with an emphasis on the great Irish writers who were associated with them.

Entertaining and interesting. The tour got me interested in the book, but now I want to take the tour again. I recommend both.

John Lennon; Boxing; Jim Morrison. These were 3 answers to trivia questions posed by author Colm Quilligan that I successfully answered and which won me a free copy of this most enjoyable book. If you want the questions, join the pub crawl. The crawl is actually fairly light on pubs which was fine with me because the tour began at 10:30 AM. I'm an amateur drinker, not a pro. But the tour is heavy on sightseeing and literary allusions related to those sights and quotes from Mr. Quilligan, an accomplished actor. The book dwells more on the pubs and the literary people associated with them. On my last visit I can only claim to have been in two of them; The Duke, and Mulligans. The tour begins at Dukes and, although James Joyce is said to have had drinks there he was more of a regular at Davy Byrnes which used to be across the street from the Duke, or as the Irish might say, across the street - gone. The other pub I was in was Mulligans where I had a few beers with my wife and niece, Kerry, who recommended the place. After being there for about 10 minutes I leaned in, because it was extraordinarily loud, to tell Kerry, "You know, this place is a dive." She seemed quite pleased with my assessment. You will also be as pleased with this book as I am. For me it gives a number of new places to start my next visit to Dublin. Which I hope will be soon.

This book was incredibly informative, but my rating is really based on the actual pub crawl that prompted the creation of this book. If any one reading this randomly happens to be in Dublin in the future, I HIGHLY recommend this tour!! They bring in actors to perform pieces from Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett, and of course there is drinking so really, what more can you ask for?
