Drugs and Death rule his world. Can a second chance be enough or will it take more to put Bane's life back on track? Born among a flurry of snow in New England at the start of 1969, Melissa El-Hajjar has always been a quiet, imaginative person. Her love of fantasy began as a child where she dreamed of dragons and elves. As a teen she began writing, inspired by a teacher who told her to always follow her imagination. She has a degree in computer programming and even worked in the business for a while. At the turn of the millennia, she moved overseas with her three children and husband. There she returned to her writing, where she enjoys creating strong, intriguing characters that you want to become better acquainted with. She spends her days in her imagination, typing fervently at her laptop.
This is one of those stories that stay with you, because you're not exactly sure if you're more smitten by the world itself or the characters who make the story. The blurb tells you nothing, and still, even as I read it for the first time I knew I wanted to read this book. I was not disappointed.
When you first meet Bane you are under the impression that he is this dangerous warrior who has no regard for life, his or that of others, but it soon becomes very clear that he is in fact nothing but a boy. Very wounded boy with both physical and emotional scars to prove it.
He is very addicted to dife, as he tries to forget his past and survive the present even if he doesn't exactly want to, because Bane doesn't have anything to life for. Still, Bane has a gift, his skills being impressive even without the basic training needed to hone them. Kel is the man who sees that, and he takes Bane under his wing. Getting him off dife and forcing him to follow the rules so that he could become a better man and so that he could prove his wort to others, but mainly to himself.
There is a romance brewing between the two, but in the end it's not really important nor is it the center of the story. Love is there, and it helps Bane grow, helps him find the confidence and trust in himself that others had robed him of, but what is more important is Bane and his steps to happiness.
It is a long journey, one that is actually described from the very beginning to the very end. There are no skipped parts where you're left with questions, or jumps in time where things have miraculously solved themselves out. No. This author tells every little detail, every won battle and every mistake made, but she tells it with enough skill to bring the world before your eyes. It's so easy to see the dances, the set rules, the simple way their life as well as their magic.
I extremely enjoyed this tale as well as the way it was told. So I recommend it to everyone who is looking for an adventure, but don't expect detailed scenes of sex or a blooming romance. This book is much more than that, and I for one am honored to have been given the privilege of getting to know the world this author so carefully chiseled.

The writing confused me, I try to like it but was impossible... giving up for now. Maybe someday I'll finish it. Moving on for another book after 10% read of Bane of Existence [image error]
Firsty I was a bit put off, when I discovered that there would be no steamy scenes in that book. But stil it was worth it. It is not a small book, but it has enough plot for 3. And the author can write, I consider it the main plus :)
