The book Girls Speak Out was founded by Andrea Johnston and Gloria Steinem. The Girls Speak Out program was founded to inspire girls and build self-esteem. Andrea Johnston holds a series of different discussions and groups with girls to talk about their lives and their feelings. They share several different stories and talk about their lives to help them build their confidence and hold onto their true selves.
Girls of all ages come together and share how their feel and open up their minds and their feelings and emotions. In order to gain self confidence you have to share your individuality. This book is a self guide and provides a step-by-step guide in how to build ones self-esteem. One thing that really caught my attention was that each girl’s story was different but they all felt the same way. I think most girls could relate to these stories. This book has a variety of different situation that relates to peoples problems and issues.
While reading this book you feel like your not going through anything alone. There are girls out there that are going through the same situations and by reading their stories you put the past behind you and you think about your future and the present. Andrea Johnston asks the girls several questions like when you feel like yourself. Sometimes the girls even have questions that you might have about your life. By listening to their responses you feel like there are people going through the same situations.
I would recommend this book to girls of all ages. Even though the book is really meant for girls of all ages you find your true self by reading this book. It really is a personal guide to self-esteem. The stories, poems and the exercises that the girls do help girls anywhere.

This is an amazing book, and I think every girl who faces problems should read it.
I like the fact that many girls made an organization to meet up and discuss their feelings, and problems. They help each other out, and listen to each others problems, while comparing them to their own problems too.

I liked what each girl wrote and how it reflects her personality by telling us her problems, and how society changes as the girls grow older.

But, at the same time, I didn't like how it was only stories. It is interesting, but boring at the same time. There isn't a lot to look at, but there are a lot of problems these girl face in their society.
I found a few stories which compared to my life, and thats when I realized that I am not alone. Other girls go through the same and worse.

I read this book at a very impressionable age- puberty. Many pooh pooh over self help or inspirational books and I was and still am one of those people but i'll make an exception for this book. Truly honest, brave and hard hitting. This book taught me to accept myself the way I am. The many stories of numerous brave women who have faced unspeakable horror and sadness and their journey to forgiveness and strength are truly inspirational.

Great read. Amazing resource for people raising, volunteering or working with girls. Includes a bibliography of children's literature. There is a newer edition which I recommend
