Great visual dictionary that has clever imagery to help young children understand what is being defined. This one seems to be an early Richard Scarry as some of the characters are different from the later books (no Lowly worm, but there is Ooch worm; no Huckle cat, just Tom cat and Huckle bear instead). It’s very extensive and I’m always finding new words we hadn’t read before.

One of my all time favorite books as a child because I learned how to write cursive by studying the letters of the alphabet. I shared it with my son when he was preschool aged. We loved seeing what Pickles Pig would do next.

Rediscovering this book to read to my kids is a revelation. Richard Scary masterfully shows he was able to write for kids while winking to adults at the same time making this a book I can read over and over to my kids without tiring of it. (Ok, within reason!) As with many older books there are elements that haven't aged well, such as gender roles and body-type humor, but my kids can't read so I skip the offensive bits.
...oh, one more thing. Does anyone else find it deeply disturbing that Doodleledoo makes a "good living" selling his wife's eggs!?

I quite literally read the spine off of this book. I remember reading this book in bed while I was supposed to be sleeping and slipping it under the covers when I heard someone coming up the steps and feigning sleep. I loved all of the different animals and their families, especially Dingo with his cool car. It also contributed to expanding my English vocabulary, undoubtedly.

Richard Scarry books are so appealing to my son. I completely understand, because I could also amuse myself with them for hours as a child. My son is 3 now and recently started requesting this book all the time. We'll often sit down together and read two or three pages (which is about the equivalent length of a standard bedtime story). The illustrations are amusing, with plenty of details to laugh at and discuss. I'm hopeful this will help him with letter recognition, too.

I came across an article this morning alluding to one of Richard Scarry's stories. Immediately my mind jumped back to the delight of introducing my daughters to the beloved author from my own childhood. Long before Where's Waldo? came on the scene, children and parents were laughing together as they pored over the details of Scarry's illustrations.
