Book: Crimson Hero, Vol. 13 Author: Mitsuba Takanashi Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars
I am still enjoying this series a lot. The drama is really heating up the closer we get to the Spring Tournament. I also like that we are getting to see a lot of what is happening off the court. I think it adds a whole other layer to the story.
I am going to try to keep my review as spoiler-free as possible, but as this is the thirteenth volume in a series, there may be spoilers for earlier volumes.
This one continues to build on Nobara’s emotional and athletic journey, balancing romance, team dynamics, and personal challenges. The tension between her and Yushin escalates as she deals with an unwanted admirer, adding to the emotional stakes. Meanwhile, both the boys’ and girls’ teams push toward their goal of the Spring Tournament, reinforcing the series’ themes of perseverance and teamwork. However, scandalous gossip threatens to derail their progress, forcing Nobara to reassess her priorities. This volume keeps the drama high while maintaining the heart of the story—passionate dedication to volleyball and personal growth.
One of the greatest strengths of this series has always been its ability to balance the intensity of sports with the personal struggles of its characters. Volume 13 is no exception, pushing Nobara and her teammates to grow in ways that add meaningful depth to the story. At the centre of this volume is Nobara’s emotional development. While she has always been fiercely determined on the court, her interactions with Yushin and the complications surrounding a secret admirer challenge her to navigate personal relationships in a way that doesn’t compromise her identity or her goals. This struggle reflects a key theme in the series—learning to balance passion, responsibility, and emotions. Her growing bond with Yushin isn’t just a romantic subplot; it also showcases how much they’ve both matured. Yushin, once emotionally distant, begins to open up more, and his evolving dynamic with Nobara feels natural rather than forced. Beyond the romance, the entire volleyball club faces a critical moment when scandalous rumours threaten their reputation. This isn’t just background drama—it’s an opportunity for the team to come together, proving their resilience both as athletes and as individuals. The way they handle adversity highlights how far they’ve come since the beginning of the series, reinforcing that teamwork extends beyond just playing a game. Overall, this volume continues to excel by making character growth an integral part of the story. The personal struggles faced by Nobara and her teammates don’t just add drama; they deepen our investment in their journey and make their eventual victories—on and off the court—all the more rewarding.
YES 5 Stars! It’s so good I couldn’t wait until tomorrow (today?) to finish it. Things are getting heated up as both teams (girls and boys) get ready for the spring tournament! Go Yushin! If you want to be TOGETHER you need to TO-GET-HER !!<——((you see what I did there))
Ps. You might want to go to Kissanime.com for the scans as there are no stores selling volume 15 and up. Im not too excited to read it online but I want to read the end of the series.
With this volume, I am officially caught up with Crimson Hero, at least until November 2 when volume 14 comes out. And trust me, that feels like a long time right now!
More fallout from all of the relationship drama fills this slightly smaller volume. Haibuki is MIA, and Yushin and the others are covering for him for now, but it won't be long before the school and coaches figure out he's missing. I hope the guys can find him quickly, but they don't really know where to look. I have a feeling he's at that other school that was trying to recruit him, but I hope that's not true.
And to add to the relationship drama, stalker Kaz decides his next move in trying to break up Nobara and Yushin after she again rejects him is to spill the beans to the whole school about Nobara and Yushin's relationship, as well as the fact that she's living in the dorms with the boys' team. Apparently, that's a bad, scandalous thing. Who knew? Nobara ends up in trouble with the girls at school, but more importantly, with the school's administration, who want the "scandal" quickly covered up. They seem to blame Nobara for everything, and despite Yushin's protests, she is eager to do what she can to shoulder the blame and clear Yushin of any wrong-doing. Yushin is so caring and sincere in the volume, you can't help but love him and want to give him a big hug. He doesn't see why they can't be together, and doesn't want to sacrifice his love for Nobara. Unfortunately, Nobara sees clearly the repercussions if the two of them were to fight to stay together. Though I think she would stay with him if she were the only one affected, she can't stand Yushin's future being hurt in any way by their relationship, so she makes the heartbreaking decision to lie to him, telling him she doesn't love him anymore, and making a clean break of their relationship. She had moved out of the boys dorm and back in with her family. As part of the deal she made with the administration, Nobara will still train and compete with the girls' volleyball team, but unless they make the Spring Tournament, she will be expelled from school eventually.
So, what's in the future for these sad, crazy kids? The boys need to find Haibuki ASAP. Nobara needs to forget about boys for a while and focus on training and winning. As for Yushin... Poor, poor Yushin. I can't imagine that Yushin will just let Nobara walk away from him, but if he's smart, he needs to trust that deep down, she DOES love him, and he needs to focus on getting him team back together, standing strong. And I can't forget Kaz, because now that he's succeeded in breaking up Nobara and Yushin, he's certain to try and swoop in again. Creepy!
Gah! I really hate when the dreaded I don't want to hurt the person I love so I'll break up with him/her cliché is used... but at least Mochida tells Nobara what an idiot she is, and the second year girls understood that it's extenuating circumstances that are causing Nobara and Yuushin to be apart. I hate stupidity of it all, but then I realize that this a shoujo and all the main characters or 15- and 16-year olds and that it's their first love and they're inexperienced in these new-found emotions.
It's been awhile since I've read these and I've even skipped a few volumes, but like any good soap opera you can jump in anywhere and pick up what's going on. This was good and I'm happy to see that the angst hasn't let up at all.
Nobara ends up moving out of the dorm because of a rumor, but then things get difficult between Yushin. I love manga, but sometimes it can be a tad bit overdramatic.
