Awwww! I *heart* this book. It is so sweet and fun, a perfect book to take on vacation or to read at home and pretend you're on vacation. I just felt good after reading STAR SHACK, and not just because I'm a Gemini and my horoscope today said that I had a lot of positive energy. Maybe it was in the stars that I was meant to spend my day reading this book, and the rest of my night smiling because of it. You know, if you believe in that stuff.

Pete is a Red Sox fan. He loves baseball and spending his summers at Gingerbread Beach. It's not the nicest beach, nor does it have the best weather. In fact, it rains more often than the sun shines. But it does have one thing going for it. Annabelle. Ever since Pete met her when they were in middle-school, he has been in love with her and has known that they were meant for each other. Even the fact that she's a Yankees fan isn't enough to keep them apart. Normally a Red Sox guy and a Yankees girl do not mix, but Annabelle is special. Pete normally can't wait for Summer to see her on the rain-crunchy beaches of Gingerbread (that's how it got it's name), but lately Annabelle has been obsessed with astrology and that's something that Pete can't deal with. He doesn't like that New Agey stuff and wishes that Annabelle would just act normal again. She even swears that she can predict the outcome of baseball games by consulting the stars, which sounds like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo to Pete. Sure, she crushed EVERYONE in her fantasy baseball league, but that can be attributed to knowledge of the games and good old fashioned luck. He thinks it's time for her to give up on the stars and come back to earth, but Annabelle has other plans.

Annabelle is a Yankees fan. She has been so excited to spend a rainy Summer with her soul mate Pete on Gingerbread Beach. She has loved him since the moment she saw him, even though he's a red Sox fan. The second she gets there she rushes to see him, but he's been acting kind of distant lately. Maybe she should check his horoscope and see if there is something in the stars that could help her figure out his problem. The problem, it seems, is that Pete doesn't like her talking about astrology, which she would like to point out, is a SCIENCE. This is a part of who she is, and if he doesn't like it, maybe he doesn't like her. She never expected him to agree with this. He can't leave her, they are meant to be! It's in the stars! What was supposed to be a wonderful and romantic summer has turned into a sad and lonely mess. Now Pete is dating someone else and Annabelle is left to stand in the rain, but she has a plan that could turn things around.

Pete is never one to turn down a dare, and when Annabelle challenges him to open an astrology business on the boardwalk called "The Star Shack", he reluctantly agrees. She wants to prove that astrology is for real and he wants to prove it's all a joke. Annabelle believes that spending time with Pete will bring him back to her, but her plan backfires. She and Pete are finding love matches for everyone else, but the two of them are drifting farther apart each day. How is that something HUGE like a baseball rivalry won't keep them apart, but a little thing like stars will? They have the whole summer to figure out if these stars will align for them or if it's time to go their separate ways.

I totally understand the sports rivalry thing. To overcome that obstacle must mean true love, so I applaud their tolerance for each other and I am awed that they can even have a relationship. So, yes, I was rooting for Pete and Annabelle the whole way! My rivalry is in hockey and it is just as FIERCE as the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry. I am a Penguins fan and there is NO WAY I would date a fan of my rival's team. If you don't know what team that is, just know that they are evil, lol.

I'm really into astrology and although I'm not as obsessed as Annabelle in the novel, I thought the story was really cute.

The Star Shack was a cute and entertaining read! Which is exactly what I wanted when I brought it on Summer vacation recently. The setting of the book is called Gingerbread Beach. It has a small-town vibe that I liked. I also enjoyed the best friends to lovers trope, which is not always popular in YA Contemporary novels. The astrology aspect of the book was fun and interesting. Besides the cover, it was the main thing that caught my interest into reading this book. I’m a Scorpio! I like astrology and knowing about each sign. I’m not completely obsessed with it though. Anyway, the main characters of this story are Pete Riley and Annabelle Lomax. Pete is a Scorpio and Annabelle is a Leo. They’ve known each other really well for many years and are best friends. Pete and Annabelle have many memories on Gingerbread Beach. Despite this, they do have issues with each other and begin to grow apart. One of the things that I disliked about the book was the beginning. It was dry and Pete/Annabelle were so negative towards each other. I wasn’t expecting this and was thinking about not finishing it. It was The growing hostility between Annabelle and Pete continued throughout the book which I didn’t enjoy. Their problems with each other could’ve been resolved if they were honest about their true emotions. This would’ve made the book shorter so I understand why the author dragged this part of the story. Other than that, I enjoyed Pete, Annabelle, and their cute relationship. Despite what the the stars of astrology say, these two are meant for each other! I’m glad that Lila Castle had the side characters present and part of the story. They make The Star Shack more enjoyable! In conclusion, I enjoyed Star Shack and I’m glad I brought it with me on vacation. It’s the perfect short and sweet book for out of town trips!

Title: The Star Shack
Author: Lila Castle
Genre: YA fiction
Publishing Information: June 1, 2010 by Sourcebooks Fire

Where I got it: E-book from the library

One sentence: Pete and Annabelle were soulmates until Annabelle becomes obsessed with astrology and challenges the skeptic Pete to open a summer business with her giving advice based on the stars.

Themes: Astrology, romance, friendship, summer, rivalry, soulmates

Main characters: 3/5
Pete and Annabelle are cute and fun, if slightly shallow in development. I feel like they lack depth and true flaws. Castle creates interesting dynamics with their rivalries in baseball allegiance (Yankees all the way), and Pete’s dislike of Annabelle’s new obsession of astrology. However, the characters lack enough depth to make them more than just sweet and simple.

Secondary characters: 3/5
Very minimal contribution to the plot. Most of them were clients of the Star Shack or vacationers. Sarah was slightly unrealistically catty and jealous, which made her seem one-sided and flat. However, they served their purpose, which is to provide a catalyst for the main characters in their personal development.
Writing style: 3.5/5
Effectively switches between Pete and Annabelle’s point-of-view, which creates an unbiased picture of their relationship. The characters are written well, particularly their conversations, which are simple and realistic. There was nothing particularly sophisticated, but the pace was right and the style got the job done.

Plot: 3/5
Sweet and funny, but unfortunately, pretty predictable. I thought that some of the elements were slightly too dramatized as well, but that’s a very opinionated view. There wasn’t a lot of added depth, but I enjoyed how Castle inserted extra elements, like the astrology, the baseball rivalry, the beach-town atmosphere, etc.

Ending: 3/5
Completely predictable, but not overdone. Cute, but not saccharine or over-the-top.

Best scene: When Pete first shows up Annabelle while giving advice.

Positives: Cute, fun and light story, realistic characters, effective writing style

Negatives: Sometimes a little boring, predictable, lack of depth

First Line: The first time I saw Annabelle Lomax, she was holding a gun.

Cover: Cute. It’s definitely how I pictured the town and the couple and I liked the background astrology image.

Verdict: A laid-back and cute summer read.

Rating: 6.2 / 10

Annabelle and Pete have always spent their summers at Gingerbread beach, it was brought them together. Nine months apart and several date prospects didn't even phase the two. Who knew what would pull them apart was a little astrology.

Annabelle considered herself a professional, a seasoned vet, of astrology. She even had a huge box of books she toted with her for her eight weeks spent at the beach. Heck, she would have taken them over the weekend. The Stars were what Annabelle lived by, how she won her Fantasy Baseball League and the drama club football pool. It worked for her. And she believed it.

Pete, a guy who lived day by day and believed in the stuff you could scientifically prove, wasn't exactly on the wave length as the new-New-Age-Annabelle when they visited Gingerbread beach for what would be their last time before graduating high school. His disbelief in what his best friend, and the girl he thought was meant for him, forced Pete to believe he truly didn't know the girl he had fallen in love with. Their nights spent emailing and weekends on the phone during their 9 months apart each year, was all a lie to him in many ways.

One thing that Annabelle believed truly, despite everything else, was that Pete was for her. He was her one chance at true love. Her soul mate. She believed you (read: her) only had one. Another thing Annabelle couldn't believe was that they were truly over. It had taken her so long to get that first kiss but she knew it meant something. So while searching for the perfect way to bring astrology into Pete's life and Pete back into hers she dared him, knowing he could never refuse a dare, to open up a summer business which she dubbed The Star Shack.

Who two better to help guide others to love then the two epic love-birds of Gingerbread beach? Too bad it didn't come without several hiccups. One in the form of a girl named Sarah.

The Star Shack was a refreshing read. The astrology provided a great twist to the typical summer beach romance that we all love to read. Not to mention it had me checking my horoscope for the first time since high school. It was pretty clean where YA Fiction is concerned which was refreshing in it's own right. Yes, it was a bit cliché and predictable but I loved it nonetheless.

The Star Shack is an adorable, fun, summer read and great for bringing a little warmth your way.

The Summary

Annabelle and Pete were the perfect couple until junior year, when Annabelle comes back with this astrology obsession. Pete things she's going nuts, and that the whole astrology thing is just a big rip-off. After a big fight, Annabelle dares Pete to open an astrology booth with her for the summer, fully aware of Pete's inability to turn down a challenge. And so we follow the pair through their summer with both their points of view; as they run The Star Shack together.

Main Characters:

Pete: I hated Pete, I hated him so much it was hard to restrain myself from flinging the book across the room. He was a complete jerk to Annabelle throughout the whole freakin' book. Well, for a jock who doesn't like being called stupid, he pretty is thick.
Annabelle: I kinda like her. I like how she could be independent and impulsive, and she didn't back off after Pete told her that astrology was stupid.

Plot:

The story was cute and funny at points. I fell in love with some of the secondary characters, although I didn't really like the main ones. However there was a lack of depth in the characters as they felt kind of flat. It was also predictable in a lot of points and sometimes boring, so it didn't really grab me, so to say. I also felt like the characters felt too many "tingles" down their spines or hands or whatever for it to be healthy. I was also unsatisfied with the ending,

To make it short, the book was way too cheesy for my own taste. I recommend it if your into a light cheesy lit-fic that you'll completely forget about in the next month or so. Which incidentally is not what I'm into at all.

Pete and Annabelle have known each other since middle school. They spend their summers at Gingerbread Beach and even though they root for opposite sports teams (Yankees/Red Soxs), they have had major crushes on each other for years. They have both been counting down the days till they can return to Gingerbread Beach for the summer again. Except this summer is different. Annabelle has become obsessed with astrology and even uses it to help her predict the outcome of sports games. Pete, who is not into New Age trends, does not like this new change in her at all. This immediately creates a lot of tension, so Annabelle dares him to open a "Star Shack" on the boardwalk with the hopes that she can spend more time with Pete and prove that astrology is real. However, the plan backfires and what was supposed to be an incredible summer starts to fall apart fast. The Star Shack by Lila Castle is a cute summertime read that will put a smile on your face.

Annabelle is a likable character, although her obsession with astrology was over the top. I could see why it would drive Pete nuts. I liked their chemistry though and their witty banter. The chapters alternated with Annabelle and Pete's point of view, which was a nice touch. I was rooting for them to get back together from the instant they parted; they are such cute couple. I think my middle school female students would love this book mainly for that reason.

The setting of Gingerbread beach is also really cute. Even though it rains there a lot, I found myself making some personal connections to the various places there, like the local coffee shop, the boardwalk, the beach, etc. All of the places all seemed like real locations that you could encounter at any beach community.

The Star Shack is similar to a lot of Sarah Dessen's novels, but it lacks that extra depth and spark. Although I enjoyed The Star Shack, if you really want a summertime read that is deeper and has more character development, go with Dessen; however, if you want a quick beach read that will warm your heart and bring a smile to your face, The Star Shack won't disappoint.

i wasn't expecting much from this book but i thought the romance would've been better. it was a short simple book that was straight to the point of the theme, which i liked because the story didn't keep on dragging on. it was also one of those books that gives you the perspectives of the 2 main characters, Pete and Anabelle. I enjoy reading books with the different perspectives because then you know how both the character feels and not just one, so you're not biased to the main character. i also liked the different horoscope description on the transition of a new chapter, it made the book unique.
The story itself however was good, childhood friends, liked each other from the start, didn't realize it was true love till older. Just the average simple books from all the break of the heavy books. There wasn't any big realization from the book that leaves a big impact on your life but i definitely agree that sometimes the best things are right in front of you.
For some reason the book jacket and the tagline in the front made me a little mad after doing a book jacket project of my own. it really wasn't the most interesting tagline i've read but the story was short and simple so i'll let it slide.
In the beginning of the story Pete seemed like a good person, the one that accepts the one they love for who they are, the easy- going person. Then all of a sudden because Anabelle started to talk about horoscopes and signs he flipped out. Honestly i was a bit confused but then from his perspective i would've been annoyed too. This is also another book where i didn't like the main female character. She was like a mosquito that you would always miss swatting. She was also one of those girls who judges someone from their looks other than for who they really are. not only that but her character was just there. i felt like the character Pete, stood out more but overall i just didn't really like Anabelle.

Beyond Reality...To the Stars: A Book Review on The Star Shack

The Star Shack Sourcebooks Inc., 2010 216 pp., $9.99
Lila Castle ISBN: 978-1-4022-4110-9

Pete and Annabelle were together, and then they were not. Annabelle obsesses about astrology; Pete thinks astrology is just fake words giving people false hope. They can’t stand each other until one day Annabelle dares Pete to open an astrology booth on the boardwalk. Pete, a hasty person, never gives up on a dare. This book has back and forth banters between these two characters that soon change from animosity to rediscovered love.

The only published book from Lila Castle, she has succeeded in making The Star Shack a great one. This book will hook the reader in to find out what happens next, and when the book ends you’ll be heartbroken because this is a stand-alone novel. While reading, you also learn quite a bit of astrology, marking every chapter, there’s a horoscope for all the different signs. At this astrology booth Pete and Annabelle offer people advice, relationship advice, based on what the stars say. Pete has no experience with astrology; all of Annabelle’s knowledge comes from books and online. Will her impromptu dare prove astrology as a lame, unrealistic idea?

I recommend this book to girls 13 years old and up. Or anyone interested in astrology or romance. While reading this I experienced a range of feelings, surprised, humor, happiness, and excited. This book definitely goes above and beyond compared to other books. This one keeps you interested, not bored, gets you thinking, so you’re not reading all the pages and still don’t know what it’s about.

This book leaves the reader wanting more. Once you get to know the character, you’ll be hooked in forever. I enjoyed this book, and anyone else who reads this will too. The Star Shack is that book, the book you don’t want to put down, don’t want to end, and don’t want to ever forget.

Very good book!
Pete and Annabelle have loved each other for-pretty much-ever. No summer would be the same for one without the other; that is until Annabelle confesses her love and reliance on astrology - something that turns Pete off completely. They meet back up the following summer and things just aren't the same. Pete is pulling away from Annabelle and at first she doesn't know why. Her best friend tries to convince her to cut her losses and spend the summer with her instead, a boy-free summer, free of relationship drama, but Annabelle can't let him go that easily.
Once she figures out its her love of astrology that's turned him off and Pete has unsuccessfully tried to move on with some new-tattooed-girl in town Annabelle tries one last thing to win him back -- she dares him to run an astrology booth with her. If it fails he wins and if it succeeds she wins - it's simple.
Pete, unable to say no to a dare, agrees to go along with her idea.
I liked how the story was told from alternating points of view; I enjoyed knowing exactly what both of them were thinking all the way through the story - it helped me not hate Pete quite as much in the middle, haha.
Things do get pretty grim for poor Annabelle as the booth begins to help everyone at Gingerbread beach's love life except her own and I feel as though the ending of the story was resolved a little too quickly. All I'll say is, if I were in her shoes I don't think I would've forgiven quite so quickly. But, it's a story and who knows, maybe I'm just not someone who easily forgives, haha.
But it was an enjoyable read; a story I'd be glad to read again someday :)

The main reason that I bought this book was because it was on sale for kindle.

But then when I read the synopsis I immediately became intrigued. Annabel and Pete are really good friends who have a hobby that they share: baseball. But Pete doesn't approve of the fact that Annabel uses astrology to help her make her fantasy team. He doesn't come right out and say it, but he obviously thinks she's crazy.

After Pete shows constant annoyance at Annabel's love for astrology and Annabel grows fed up with Pete's rude behavior, she challenges him to a dare. Together, they will open an astrology shop, where they will use the stars to give people advice on love and relationships. If it doesn't work out, Annabel says that she will completely drop the whole astrology thing.

This reason why I can't rate this book 5 stars is because some of the characters have no motivation for acting like they do. Sara, who is a side character, is depicted as a bad person from the very beginning, but all of her character traits are very cliche. Also, Pete redeems himself in the end, but his complete rudeness to Annabel about a hobby that she is very interested in is just immature. I didn't see any reason for why he had to act like that. It just made him look like an ass.

This story demonstrates the hardships of falling for your best friend. With lots of interesting characters and cool scenery it's a book that I imagine a lot of people will enjoy.

Who would I recommend this book to? Anyone who enjoys young adult fiction, astrology, and fun depictions of beachy things, like the ocean and the boardwalk.

Ever since I first heard about The Star Shack I've been dying to read it. Since I loved the idea of mixing together romance, two different views about astrology, and an astrology based business; I mean does that or does that not make for purse awesome ? I certainly think it does! Luckily, The Star Shack proved to be an absolute delight to read!

I adored the two main characters, Annabelle and Pete, and the fact that you get to see from both point of views even more so. Both characters were funny, sweet, and felt 100% real making it easy to relate to them. I also liked the fact that they had chemistry, which is something you don't always see between two characters that are romantically involved in YA!

While the beginning was a bit dry as the story continued it kept getting better and better to a point were I was running through the pages, dying to find out what would happen next. Would Annabelle and Pete end up together? Would Pete see the light in astrology? All were questions swirling around in my head and ones that will probably be in yours if you give this book a chance! Plus, the premise was fun and light making it, in my opinion, the perfect beach read for Summer 2010, and adding to this, the astrology part of this was also great, which I do have to admit I was surprised to see.

As said before, The Star Shack is without a doubt the prefect beach read for Summer 2010! I assure you that you won't be the least disappointed in this exciting story and looking forward to read more by Castle in the end.

This novel was about two teenagers named Annabelle and Pete. This summer is the real time to test out their relationship even though Annabelle lives in Albany, New York and Pete lives in Boston, Massachusetts. They only see each other during the summer in Gingerbread. Everything was fine until Annabelle started to love astrology, and that was the main thing she would talk about. Pete got annoyed with it after a while, and they would always be fighting. So, they broke up. Pete moved on and started seeing a college student, Sarah, but Annabelle couldn’t accept that he was moving on. Annabelle then dared Pete (he could never say no to a dare) into opening up a shop on giving advice using astrology.
The Star Shack is more 3 ½ stars than 4. I liked this novel because it was about astrology, and I find astrology to be interesting. I also liked it because out of all the young adult novels that I have read, none of them involved astrology, so it was different, but in a good way. The Star Shack is told in two perspectives, Annabelle and Pete’s. Normally I don’t like novels that are told in different perspectives because it could get confusing, and it is just something I don’t like when I’m reading, but how the author, Lila Castle wrote it, it worked. Probably because it is about a couple, and them going through their own problems so you get to see how each one feels about the other.

My Thoughts: Whoa. I love astrology so as soon as I read the description I knew I had to read this! We meet Annabelle and Pete who have had a thing since they were just kids and have came Gingerbread Beach every summer since. Annabelle has recently became really into astrology and Pete doesn't really believe in it. He believes more in everyday is a new day, etc. He starts to get fed up with Annabelle and she challenges him to open a summer business reading off people's astrology he can't deny it. You can see the chemistry between these two from the get go, and you just know they should be together. Many obstacles rise throughout the book keeping them from getting back together. This book was full of cute and fun! I loved all the astrology we saw throughout the book and the way they were together. We also get to watch other characters get together and fall in love. This book was a fun read.

Overall: I really liked this one. Its a cute book that makes you want to smile and go kick your shoes off at a beach, kind of impossible to do when its covered in snow outside but now I want to head on outside and wish there was sun outside

Cover: The cover is adorable!

Castle's book on Astrology. It's mainly about these two best friends, Pete and Annabelle that can only see each other in the summer. They both were sure they were meant for each other, but this summer, Annabelle is into Astrology, which Pete find a complete buzz. Pete does not want anything to do with Astrology.. that was until Annabelle dared him to open a astrology booth down by the boardwalk with her. He could not say "no" to a dare, so he decides to follow through. The thing I don't like about this book is that these characters may have the characteristics of a teenager, but their behavior seem very young to me. I find their acts very middle school and childish.. perhaps that is because I am quite mature myself. One thing about this book that confuses me, but I kind of like is the alternation between the two narrators. One chapter it's Pete's first person pov, and the next would be Annabelle's. It took me a while to get the hang of the constant switch on narration, but at the same time, it manages to give me some different insights on the two character's ideas and feelings. This style of Castle's writing managed to make the story seem more interesting to keep up with.

I have to be honest, astrology is totally not my thing. I've gone and done the card readings(I swear they spy at the table to see what you and your girlfriends chat about) and read the whole horoscope thing. I'm just not into it. With that said I'll confess that the astrology aspect of this book was not as annoying as I thought it would be and as it was in the beginning. As the book progressed and I got to know Annabelle and Pete better it kind of became secondary to me. Pete and Annabelle were the main focus. And yes the astrology is what lead to their conflict and awkwardness over the summer, but it also helped them to see where the other was coming from.

That's really what I liked most about The Star Shack. I mean it wasn't the best book every written and I don't think you got to see these characters deeper then the surface, but I also think the characters grew from the beginning to the end. It made the book just an adorable fun read and that is all it was to me. Just something quick and not too heavy.

This book is following a couple... well ex-couple for most of the book name Pete and Annabelle. They broke up because Pete didn't understand Annabelle's obsession with astrology. Pete gets a new girl name Sarah during his break with Annabelle. Annabelle dares him to run a shack with her, for Annabelle this was her way to show him how cool astrology. For Pete, he couldn't say no to any dare. Pete is surprised that he is a natural at astrology. In the end Pete and Sarah break up. He goes and gets back with Annabelle. The book ends with them happy in love.
I really like that this book switched off from Pete and Annabelle. It was reading 2 books at once. They are so different so it was nice to see into both of their heads to understand the story more. I would recommend this anyone who enjoys romance. This book would be good for the summer on the beach because it's easy. It's just a relaxing book that is only read for enjoyment rather than educational purpose.

I think this book is kind of romantic yet it had some humor in it. The main characters, Annabelle and Pete are soulmates together. But Pete only dislikes one flaw about Annabelle, the fact that she's into astrology. The summer was going so well until they started having arguments and things get a little shakey between them. I like this book because it teaches readers that things aren't always going to end well, and things aren't always as they seem. I would recommend this book to girls that like being themselves no matter how much someone dislikes them for liking it.

The Star Shack got on my TBR because of the Completely Contemp Challenge I am running this year - I set a goal of reading 15 books in 2010, 2011, and 2012 - it was very easy to make a list for 2012, slightly harder for 2011, and quite a bit harder for 2010, just because of the number of contemporary books I have read. I had always been slightly intrigued by this one, and when I researched and found out it was a 2010 publication, it drastically moved up my reading list.

Here's a nice little mini review. :)

I loved this book! It's not something that I would usually read, but I gave it a try. Castle's writing is very addicted. I read the first chapter and I was hooked - I couldn't put it down. It is a bit predictable, but besides this the book has everything going for it: it's fast paced, it's enjoyable, and the characters are awesome. I can't wait to read more by Castle in the future. Grade: A.

Bottom Line – Sweet, funny, carefree read – perfect for the beach! I can't wait to see what Castle comes up with next, I can only hope that she keeps up with her new age themes – it's just so different from other books out there! I give The Star Shack a 4 mushrooms!

The Star Shack- Lila Castle

A short easy read, The Star Shack would make a great beach read. While I didn’t buy the catalyst for Pete and Annabelle’s fight, I did enjoy the plot arc and their subsequent realizations. Chock full of really specific astrology terms, I felt at times I needed a glossary to make out what they were saying. You still get that happy ending though.

Overall: B

This was a cute, quick summer read that I took on vacation and read almost completely on my flights. I wasn't expecting much, as it was a book that had been removed from my library collection, but it seemed sweet enough. And it was, even though less than a week later I can hardly remember anything about this book other than it was alright and mildly sweet.

This was a DNF for me, though I did skip to the end to see what happened. Started and ended super cute, but I just don't tolerate unrequited love stories with -- quoting the book here -- "tattooed skanks" as a secondary love interest for the male lead. Either the protags need to suffer alone and be adorable while building reader anxiety or don't bother suffering at all.

Kind f surprised I finished this because the astrology stuff was annoying, and the whole thing was very, very predictable - and unlike going to far - not all that sexy (read: not at all) but I was on a bender so yes, I finished.

meh. I wanted a nice light beach read, but this was too light for my tastes.
