"Big Sky Country" is the story of Jill and Riordan.

Our h is the beautiful best friend to a an average looking lady. The lady is engaged to OM. OM's brother does not want the wedding to go through as they're young, so the h steps in to protect her best friend. Able to charm the most resilient of men, she is shocked when the H mocks her, calling her a butterfly. But when the lady asks her help while visiting the OM and H's ranch, the h agrees.

Ofcourse then the book proceeds like a Diana Palmer novel, with loads of angry kisses between h and H, some catty OW drama, the H mocking the h due to his tragic past, confessions and a HEA. It was weird how abruptly the story ended, giving all the inhibitions they had during the courtship. Anyways, a good read!

The H in this novel has a personality that's as charmingly abrasive as Dr. House. I didn't think I would like Riordan all that much, based on the blurb, but I was entertained by his frank and mocking commentary on everything. He also provided a very welcome break from the annoying presence of the heroine's mousy, insecure and clingy vine best friend Kerry. This is the first time in a long time that I've come away from a novel absoluting hating a minor character because her personality just got on my last nerve. The heroine Jill was more than a match for Riordan's biting comments and I enjoyed the way they sparred with each other. What I didn't enjoy so much was the fact that spineless Kerry was the source of their conflicts. Kerry was Jill's best friend and she relied on the heroine to do every f*****g thing for her. Kerry couldn't cope with Riordan's disapproval of her engagement to his brother Todd so she had to beg Jill ( literally ) to change all her summer plans just to act as protector cum babysitter.

I really hated Kerry. She's like a parasite that clings to the heroine. She's insecure because Todd is handsome and she's plain. I just wanted to knock her on her head because she gets anxious whenever an attractive woman is in Todd's vicinity. Her continual need for Todd's reassurance of his love and devotion annoyed me. Eventually after they're married and he gets used to her, Todd will start to grow irritated each time she grabs onto his hands when a beautiful woman is talking to him. She doesn't even have a personality and no real hobbies. Her life revolves around pleasing Todd. Wtf kind of one sided relationship is that ? Kerry spoiled this book for me because I couldn't understand why the heroine Jill would want to be friends with such a clingy insecure vine who just used her. Friendship is supposed to be symbiotic not a one way street.

OK now to the actual romance part: Riordan and Jill have a lot of chemistry but spend too much time trying to one up each other. They were fairly well matched though and I never got the impression that Jill allowed him to dominate and control and her. Jill was a heroine who had a lot of self confidence without being vain, even though she was extremely beautiful. She's one of the few heroines who actually know she's beautiful and who embraces it ( Thank God for that ). There wasn't any sex in the story although the MC's did come close a couple times. The wannabe OW Sheena was more of a pest ( to everybody ) because nobody seemed to like her much; the H seemed to tolerate her company just to be neighbourly and to make Jill jealous. It wasn't one of my favourite books by Janet Dailey but I did wish there was a little more time spent on the MC's and less on the plight of poor woebegone Kerry.

It doesn't matter what else you do," Riordan's mouth twisted into a cold smile, "but don't be a fool and marry her!"

Riordan had made his disapproval of Kerry, his brother's fiancee, quite obvious. Yet Jill, Kerry's roommate, was determined to do anything she could to help her friend. Even if it meant setting a trap for Riordan.

Jill was beautiful; she could have any man she wanted. But when Jill challenged him, Riordan turned the tables on her

Trash romance fiction. HAHAHA! My sister and I read all of Janet Dailey's 50 states romance novels when we were in our teens. A strange freak siezed us and we decided to start reading them again. We read most of this one while driving home from Oregon after we found it in a used bookshop in Montana. It's a fun two hour distraction... mostly funny to laugh at the cheesey language. Makes me feel like I'm 15 again.

I read this in 1979, so I don't remember much of it. I will have to read it again before completing this review. I just wanted to mark it "read" so that I won't lose it again.

Quite dated. Again the all macho hero who thinks the worst of all women or at least comes across that way. Heroine kept pushing the hero's buttons. She wanted to use her goodlooks to charm the hero and wind him round her finger to help her friend out. Of course it didn't work out according to plan.

Quick read, romance. Currently reading "mindless" quick reads this week. Have other irons in the fire that require actual thinking! All in all, this author is quite entertaining.

Jill is my favorite character. The author describes Jill's beauty as countless, her hair as the golden sun. Her beau, Riordan, is a macho, lady killer. Read this book for an unexpected ending.
