Во-первых, этот учебник очень хорошо написан. Это большая редкость, когда даже не книга, а именно учебник написан просто и понятно.
Во-вторых, этот учебник сможет заинтересовать даже тех читателей, которые никакого отношения к факультету криминалистики не имеют. В каком-то смысле эта книга походит на учебники по социологии, психологии и социальной психологии в том смысле, что будет интересна даже тем, кто не учится на соответствующим факультете. Книга не требует от читателя каких-то особых знаний.
В-третьих, книга может стать отличной альтернативой множеству обычных книг, как например книгам типа The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry, Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us, The Psychopath Whisperer: The Science of Those Without Conscience и пр. в том смысле, что один раздел книги посвящается природе такого явления как психопаты. Объяснение авторы данного учебника дают не в пример лучше, чем вышеназванные три книги. Вообще, авторы очень интересно и научно обоснованно показывают, насколько сильна взаимосвязь между поведением человека и тем, какие у него гены и как он был воспитан. В принципе, об этом же пишут и другие авторы книг по социальной психологии, но именно в этой книге авторы обосновывают свои утверждения с помощью научных методов. Авторы так же приходят к выводу, что влияние генов не намного важнее чем то, в каких условиях был воспитан человек (социальное окружение). Этому вопросу авторы посвящают первые главы, показывая тем самым, что это основа основ того почему люди совершают криминальные поступки. Другими словами криминальное поведение людей основывается на двух главных факторах: биологии и социального окружения. Как я отметил выше, к таким же выводам приходят все авторы книг по психологии, включая учебники по социальной психологии.
Условно книгу можно разделить на два раздела. В первом разделе авторы пишут о том, КТО совершает преступления и почему он или она это делает. Тут присутствуют темы, объясняющие причины криминального поведения (биологическая и социальная), даётся обзор криминального поведения совершённого молодыми людьми, а так же категорий людей связанных с тем или иным психологическим состояние существенно повлиявшим на совершение преступления. Сюда относятся не только люди, определяемые как психопаты, но и люди, страдающие или заявляющие что страдают различными психическими заболеваниями. Авторы рассматривают, в каких случаях это помогало уйти от тюремного наказания, а в каких нет. Так как за основу была взята американская судебная система, т.е. уголовные дела, рассматриваемые американским судом, не всем читателям будет интересно читать этот раздел. Однако для общего понимания данного вопроса, данная глава всё же относительно полезна.
Что касается условного второго раздела книги, то тут авторы дают короткий обзор того, ЧТО делают эти люди или КАКИЕ преступления совершают граждане в США. В данном разделе даётся короткий, но ёмкий обзор краж, изнасилований, терроризма, массовых убийств совершаемых на территории США и заканчивается всё это обзором преступлений совершённых «белыми воротничками» а также киберпреступлениями. Да, не каждому читателю будет интересно подробно останавливаться на каждом преступлении совершаемого в США. Тем не менее, написано достаточно интересно как не для жителя США так и не для человека изучающего курс по криминалистике. Минимальный интерес всё же нужен, чтобы книга удерживала внимание и интерес читателя, но авторы сделали всё возможное, чтобы упросить материал (для не специалиста) и чтобы сделать его максимально интересным даже не для жителей США. Я так уверенно это утверждаю по той простой причине, что я слишком часто сталкиваюсь с книгами, в которых авторы пишут либо не интересно, либо очень коротко, либо очень сложно. Поэтому эта книга стала тем редким исключением, которой удалось избежать всех трёх факторов.
И последнее. Конечно, это всё же учебник, который рассматривает очень широкий круг вопросов, поэтому за более подробным анализом конкретной темы нужно обращаться к более специализированным книгам. Проблема только в том, что многие авторы, рассматривающие только одну тему – психопаты – упоминают в своих книгах ещё меньше фактов, чем авторы этой книги, т.е. книги которые в сравнении с этой книгой кажутся абсолютно пустыми и бесполезными.
First of all, this textbook is very well written. It is very rare when not even a book, but a textbook, is written simply and understandably.
Second, this textbook will be of interest even to readers who have nothing to do with the Department of Criminalistics. In a way, this book is similar to textbooks on sociology, psychology, and social psychology in the sense that it will be of interest even to those who do not study in the relevant department. The book does not require any special knowledge from the reader.
Third, the book can be a great alternative to many conventional books, such as The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry, Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us, The Psychopath Whisperer: The Science of Those Without Conscience, etc., in that one section of the book is devoted to the nature of the phenomenon of psychopaths. The authors of this textbook do a much better job of explaining it than the three books mentioned above. In general, the authors show in a very interesting and scientifically sound way how strong the correlation between a person's behavior, what genes they have, and how they were raised. In principle, other authors of books on social psychology write about the same thing, but in this book, the authors substantiate their assertions with the help of scientific methods. The authors also conclude that the influence of genes is not much more important than the conditions in which a person was brought up (social environment). The authors devote the first chapters to this issue, thus showing that it is the basis for why people commit criminal acts. In other words, people's criminal behavior is based on two main factors: biology and social environment. As I noted above, all authors of psychology books, including social psychology textbooks, come to the same conclusion.
The book can be divided into two sections. In the first section, the authors write about how WHO commits crimes and why he or she does it. Some topics explain the causes of criminal behavior (biological and social), give an overview of criminal behavior committed by young people, as well as categories of people associated with one or another psychological state significantly influenced the commission of a crime. This includes not only people defined as psychopaths but also people who suffer or claim to suffer from various mental illnesses. The authors look at the cases in which it helped to avoid prison sentences and in which it did not. Since the chapter is based on the American judicial system, i.e., criminal cases tried in an American court, not all readers will be interested in this section. However, for a general understanding of the issue, this chapter is still relatively useful.
As for the conventional second section of the book, the authors give a brief overview of WHAT these people do or WHAT crimes citizens commit in the United States. This section gives a short but succinct overview of theft, rape, terrorism, and mass murders committed in the U.S. and ends with an overview of white-collar crimes and cybercrimes. Yes, not every reader will be interested in dwelling on every crime committed in the USA. Nevertheless, the writing is interesting enough for both a non-US resident and a person not studying a forensics course. A minimum of interest is still necessary for a book to hold the reader's attention and interest, but the authors have done their best to simplify the material (for the non-specialist) and to make it as interesting as possible, even for non-US residents. I say this so confidently for the simple reason that I too often come across books in which the authors write either not interesting, very short, or very complicated. So, this book was that rare exception that managed to avoid all three factors.
One last thing. Of course, this is still a textbook that deals with a very wide range of issues, so for a more detailed analysis of a particular topic, you should consult more specialized books. The only problem is that many authors dealing with only one topic - psychopaths - mention even fewer facts in their books than the authors of this book, i.e., books that seem empty and useless in comparison with this book.

Detta var inte mitt ämne och inte min volym. Intressant naturligtvis att få en välresearchad(?) genomgång av brott och statistik kring vem som begår vilka. Jag har ingen anledning att tro något annat än att boken är välunderbyggd. Men inte mitt ämne.

Interesting read; gives a good overview of criminal behavior, giving helpful examples of cases and research. The format is not as user friendly as newer additions of text-books, but the information is slightly less bias than newer, updated texts. If you have any kind of desire to learn about criminal psychology, then definitely go with an older text, as (in the case of this one) it is geared toward fact and holds slightly less concern over social criticism.

I am basically done with the criminal psych course, so ta ta textbook. This textbook was very informative, a bit hefty info wise. Like really...cluttered with information. Some of it interesting and needed....some not. The chapters were probably logner than necessary but whatever. Just glad to be done

The writing was pretty good, but very, very, very, very, very, repetitive. Chapters are 30 pages when they could cover everything in 15. The information is a bit dated but it’s psychology so I know a lot of experiments/studies cannot be replicated. It was overall okay though. Interesting.

A very informative and well researched book overall. A great book for an upper divisional undergraduate or beginning level graduate program Criminal Psychopathology classes. Covers origins of criminal behavior thoroughly in the first four chapters, and dedicates each additional chapter to criminal behaviors in correlation with mental illness presenting or lacking and the statistical evidence of such through use of multiple, credible sources.
