To get to safety, William and his friends must walk a narrow path between Fury and Fear.
With the Asylum behind them, the group head to their new friend Gracie’s community. In a world where giving someone your trust could mean death, they still haven’t decided if they should put their faith in this girl.
The path to Gracie’s community passes through ruins that are used as the battleground for two warring cities. Their lives depend on not only avoiding Fury’s and Fear’s soldiers, but they will also have to evade the cannibalistic scavengers that make their home in the desolated landscape. And of course, the diseased.
What does this hellish journey have in store for the group? Will they all make it to the other side alive? And if they do, what lies in wait for them in Gracie’s community?
Between Fury and Fear is the eighth book in the thrilling post-apocalyptic saga Beyond These Walls. In a world where life hangs in the balance, how many will make it to the other side?

“Trust is hard to deal with, when your instincts don’t warn you.” Another provocative instalment! I love the frightening and thrilling adventures of this series! The writing is very descriptive, so you can let your imagination run and see the action. Michael Robertson has written another doozy of a post apocalyptic thriller. This is a nerve wrecking premise in which suspense is everywhere, and the surprises are non-stop. The intrigues keep the reader turning the pages for the next fateful encounter. The pay-offs are perfectly timed and so very satisfying. I kept tripping, in every corner there is a twist! An intriguing blend of adrenaline fuelled action, with no respite for the protagonists nor the reader. The desire to trust and have faith in a person that could be their salvation is overtaken by a profound and rightly placed mistrust. Violent and introspective, Between Fury and Fear #8 is filled with dark themes and fast pacing that will bring you to the edge. It challenges the reader with many powerful, thought-provoking moments that takes the story of desperation, despair, hope, faith, resistance, survival, life, death..and accelerates it to new levels of conscience and interpersonal connections. A fabulous series! Impatient to read the sequel!
I read books 1 - 6 very quickly and was quite positive about those, however, I've fallen out of love with this series.
Books 1 - 6 had a slower pace given the focus on National Service which I really enjoyed the unique premise of. I still questioned the realism that in a community that is living effectively how we would in medieval times would we keep the traditional 'at 18 you're an adult' in place, it would feel more likely the kids would start to lose freedom as soon as they could hang up a shirt or sweep the floor but I understand most of us don't want to read a book with a 13 year old main character, however from the fall of Edin it was none stop action and adventure to the point where it's almost exhausting to read with pages and pages of ACTION. I find it difficult suspending belief our main characters could actually survive the scenarios the author has written them into.
I'm also not sure if it was my own disengagement by that point, but I also really struggled with actually 'picturing' the environment our main group were in, especially around the wall scenes. One minute they're up on grass the next they're down a pit under some diseased but can hear those up on a walk way?
And finally, the actual characters fall flat. The bad guys seem to just be bad with not much motivation (such as Magma) and our main characters themselves all seem to be extremely selfish. Olga's hatred of Gracie (so far) seems to be completely unfounded in anything other than the fact she helped Max survive and it's becoming draining for that to be her only characteristic. More work could be done to flesh out the thoughts and feelings of our other characters to understand where this is coming from. I don't get they feeling they actually like each other.
Either way, I think I'll leave the series here.

“Well, well,” the woman said, her words wet with a lisp from her lack of front teeth. “This is a pleasant surprise. You went to the effort of delivering yourselves to us.” The woman waved at the pack of scavengers and said, “Thank you.”
Our heros now stuck between Fury and Fear need to find a way across a ruin that is at war!
With cannibal scavengers, robot dogs and drones their world has well and truly changed!
What a fantastic journey that was! I absolutely love how the further south they get the more technologically advanced the world is. It opens up the series to a whole new experience.
I'm extremely excited for the next installment :) Keep em coming! This series is brilliant!
Skim reading this one too Olga is stupid. The characters are flat. It’s hard to believe only stupid evil people survived. That’s generally not how it works in nature.

Summary: William and his friends decide to take a chance and follow Gracie to her home. Their world is filled with unknown dangers from the Diseased to groups who to kill you for invading their territory leaving the guys to wonder if they would ever find a safe haven. Now Gracie made them promise to follow her no questions asked making Olga question what her motives are. The trip to Gracie’s community is filled with terrors that William and his friends have never seen. After all the dangers they have faced together, their need to protect each other is taken to the breaking point. What they will find or if they will even survive remains to be seen.
This was a fascinating look at how each of their strengths and weaknesses supported each other. William may not always be the fastest or the strongest, but when a decision needs to be made the group trusted him to make the correct choice. Max’s ability to walk among the Diseased gave them an unknown edge, but the cost to him was unimaginable. Artan’s strength came to the forefront when they needed it. Olga trusted few people and she was rarely wrong. Matilda’s love for William was the rock he needed when all else failed.
The numerous dangers they overcame could be the edge they need to survive what is to come.
Book 8 in this post-apocalyptic survival thriller is a real roller coaster ride as our team of survivors travel towards the wall, however before they get there they have to follow Gracie's instructions on how to traverse a once technologized city, which was now nothing more than a wreck and which was over run by not only the diseased, but also the scavengers, and two armies who fought a constant battle to protect their turf. They were on their way to Dout, the community which Gracie had originally come from, but there was tension between Olga and Gracie and Hawk kept wanting to prove himself to his friends, who he had betrayed in Umbriel, so he kept trying to play the hero and endangering them all. The Fear and the Fury, the blue and red uniformed soldiers took no prisoners, so when our team were finally caught they faced their biggest challenge yet. I loved this book, found it so strange that our team of friends had no knowledge of all the modern amenities we nowadays take so for granted and would love to see them safe at Dout but am sure they have to make their own way to the wall as was their original intent because the welcome they were given seemed forced somehow, and maybe Olga is right to not trust completely!! It is a tense read one which keeps the reader totally engrossed in the story and rooting for our team of survivors against all odds!
As our group of Edin refugees leaves the Asylum behind, their new friend Gracie offers to guide them as far as Dout, her community, which means travelling through the ruins of a modern-day city. It is now a no-man's land, between the warring enclaves of Fury and Fear, whose soldiers maim or kill any trespassers and leave the bodies for the cannibalistic scavengers who roam the area, along with the diseased. Members of Gracie’s community have learned how to avoid meeting any of these groups...most of the time. The story relates the continuing dangers along the way, with each person wrestling his/her own demons, and their overriding concern about trusting Gracie’s true motives. They observe what happens as stray travelers and opposing soldiers get captured and dealt with. Eventually, the group gets separated, all our friends are captured and brought into an old arena to serve as entertainment for the public as they get fed to a diseased mob. Can all of our friends escape to safely reach Dout? The story is easy to follow, keeping the reader engrossed, rooting for the team’s success as they try to reach the wall. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and am eager to continue the journey.
What did I like most about this book? The characters. My favorite is William. He is the defacto leader of the group even though he is not the best at everything. HE perseveres and tries to choose the best direction for the group. He has chosen to follow Gracie to her promised safety after they escaped the from Asylum and Grandfather Jacks. There are new dangers facing them within the city they have to traverse to reach that safety, not just the diseased they have been fighting to stay alive. Olga is distrustful of Gracie and grouses about her choices continually. Hawk is constantly putting them in danger with his hotheaded behavior. Max is fighting PTSD from his previous experiences. Artan is going with the flow. Matilda is William's reason for being and she is there for him as his partner as he struggles to keep up with everyone even after being injured. If you have read the others in the series, you will enjoy this book. I know I did. I think that this is a very good book and would highly recommend it.
I am exhausted just reading about the exploits of William, Matilda and friends as they battle the diseased, the scavengers, the factions and everything in between. So there is certainly plenty of action.
It's psychologically intriguing because of the effects of so much trauma in a terrifying world left ravaged due to a virus.
The writing is fast-paced and the characters are well-developed, while the sense of place is extremely well done. It's sad and disturbing, thought-provoking and compelling.
Some characters are more likeable than others - both Olga and Hawk are annoying but fit into the story perfectly. Max is the most poignant and I really like how William respects Matilda, never jealous of her talents...true love. Artan is an enigma in his wisdom - so far.
Where this series will end I am not sure...or has it? The next does not include the main characters. Who knows?
Rip-roaring, danger-filled, edge of your seat excitement! At least for us readers. Our team of heroes is coming up against something new - technology and everyone wants to kill them. Even though the characters are pretty well fleshed out in this latest book (#8 of Beyond these Walls from Michael Robertson), I do recommend reading this series in order. Fighting their way South, this is the first big city the crew has come across. They start to learn about how things were BEFORE the fall. Like you might expect, it seems man can not learn to love their neighbors and just fight a common enemy (the zombies). They instead just want to keep a life of violence and take everyone else's stuff. Well, it is the apocalypse, so there is that. This was an exciting, quick read and definitely a series to add to your TBR list. Thanks for the ARC Michael, this is an honest review.
This latest episode of the Beyond these Walls series takes our crew in a new direction. Where in the past they have been going from one unknown situation to another, they finally have a guide leading them to a promise of “safety” and security. Of course, nothing can be that easy can it? Nope, along with the living dead, they have to contend with warring armies and scavengers who have their own issues. Once again, the story is action packed and takes our travelers through a number of harrowing situations as they attempt to achieve their goal. I received an advance reader copy and chose to provide this review.
I have really enjoyed this series. In this installment our heroes didn't make it very far, with the action occurring in one small area. We are beginning to see some repetition of the theme of fighting the diseased, running from bad people, being rescued by Max, etc. An interesting twist this time was Spike faltering a bit in his heroic abilities. He and the rest of the gang have been blessed with strength and luck until now. As for their stay in Gracie's home, I suspect nothing is ever as it seems in this universe. Only time will tell what kind of mess the crew has gotten themselves into this time.
Well! So long and good riddance to Grandfather Jacks! This is an awesome series of apocalyptic survival that makes me tired and anxious. They’ve fought the protectors, GFJ, and got caught between Fear and Fury! They are safe for now with Gracie and her crew. I don’t give much away, but in this case Olga is wearing my patience thin. She’s become more of a liability than Hawk, the wild man. Anyhow, I’m pushing on to the next book because I’m curious what’s over the wall as well and why William just won’t settle down with Mathilda.
This instalment is exciting. The world of “Beyond These Walls” has been expanded again. I am amazed at Michael Robertson’s capacity to create such stories and worlds. He is very talented and definitely underrated. From starting out in Edin in book 1 to where the group find themselves in this book (no spoilers from me) this journey is detailed, heart stopping, shocking and everything fans expect.
As usual I am looking forward to the next book. This is a series that does not disappoint.
This is a better read than the last book, unfortunately the characters are still childish and selfish to the point i want most of them dead, lots of action and infighting going on, and apparently there are absolutely no "nice" people in the world, i'll move onto the next book, but if it's more of the same, (tantrum, sulking, whinging, and arguing) from the main "heroes"!! then that might be it for me.
This latest story is an adrenaline fueled rollercoaster ride. William and his friends are being lead through a ruined city by Gracie. On there way to her underground colony but there is danger at every turn. Plenty of edge of the seat action and a complete page turner would definitely would recommend this story and the whole series.
Another really good installment.with each book I appreciate more and more the journey of william and tilda and their companions.this post apocalyptic world has such a realistic and deep dark feel to it.the companions have been through hell here is to hoping they get a much deserved reprieve from the evils of this world.
This series just keeps going from strength to strength. The world building is incredible and each stage of the journey is taught with suspense, new characters, and new obstacles. You cannot predict where it goes next and I’m immersed in this world and what happens to our lead group. Highly recommend.
I have to appreciate the fact that this series always keeps me guessing.
I thoroughly enjoyed the addition of Gracie's character, and the change of scenery to a more urban setting. While the battle between Fury and Fear seemed a little contrived at times, I did enjoy the action.
I'm really enjoying this series. This particular book took us on a new adventure through a once bustling city, between rivaling cities. It was engaging from start to finish! I can't wait to see what adventures are in store next for our group of heroines!
Such a great series, a glimpse into another world. Highly recommend, you’ll be glued to your seat. A really enjoyable read! So glad I found this series!
