English Feminism, 1780-1980

Rate this book
Barbara Caine offers the first complete overview of the history of "modern" English feminism, from the French Revolution through to the advent of Women's Liberation. Her analysis of feminist organizations, debates, and campaigns shows a keen sense of the relationship between feminist thought and actions, and wider social and cultural change. The result is a fascinating study with a new perspective on feminists and feminist traditions which should interest and instruct readers at all levels.

Read for my BA Thesis.

Overall, this book seemed a bit too chaotic. I'd prefered to focus more on actual historical events and then maybe dive into the philosophical differences and social background. Especially the last chapter on the Women's Liberation movement was just not enough.

I guess it's a good place to start.

I read this book for my research on the influence of victorian feminism on the workposition of women in Victorian England. The great thing about this book was that there was so much information to be found even though it never seemed that way. It was a good view of the development of english feminism, but sometimes I wished there were more titles so there was a more clear sense what each paragraph was going to be about.
