I'll admit that I don't always like the writing style of this book (and don't get me started on the design... white writing on cerise background, were they nuts?). It is a little shrill, and lacks warmth.

But this is a book I go to time and again. It has really good family recipes that work. Some of the quantities are off - Day-Lewis says she doesn't have a sweet tooth but you could have fooled me. In general though, it is full of useful stuff - from simple to trickier - and if you have kids and have to feed a lot of people a lot of the time then it should be on your bookshelf.
