What do you do when your hero turns out to be the guy who hates your guts? Sabrina Cassidy is turning her life around. Sure, it's about six weeks too late. Sure, she should have said no to those umbrella drinks on the beach. And to the hot guy who flirted her skirt right off. Okay, she probably should have said no to the whole girls weekend in the first place. But now she is definitely getting her act together. Right after she figures out what to do about her broken down car that's stranded her six hours from home with no money, a ruined credit history...and morning sickness. Out of options, she swallows her legendary independent streak and calls the only person who won't hang up on her. Luke. The best friend that she's never really deserved. Oh hell no. There is no way Marc Sterling is going to let his brother get all twisted up by Sabrina again the way he was all through high school. That means letting her think she's talking to Luke when she calls and then using his six-hour drive to "rescue her" to figure out a plan to send her sweet ass in the opposite direction ASAP. But when they're stuck overnight in a motel room together, there's something in the air besides their customary insults. Sure, her rebellious attitude, smart mouth, and purple panties still drive him crazy, but now it's a different kind of crazy. The kind that has him driving her home instead of to the nearest airport. And when Luke steps up to be her hero, as always, Marc realizes he's completely forgotten whose heart he wanted to protect in the first place.
Erin Nicholas is the New York Times bestselling author of over sixty sexy contemporary romances. Her stories have been described as toe-curling, enchanting, steamy and fun.
She lives in the Midwest with her husband who only wants to read the sex scenes in her books, her kids who will never read the sex scenes in her books, and family and friends who say they’re shocked by the sex scenes in her books (yeah, right!).
This one started out slow for me. I didn't care for Mark, he came off as an asshole. I liked Sabrina, but she was a hot mess. I thought she dealt with Mark showing up very well, when she was totally expecting someone else. Mark grew on me as you could tell that the feelings he had for Sabrina were real and that he was upset about learning things from her past. I loved it too when he really wanted more for Sabrina, that he didn't want her to settle, even if he didn't talk to her about what she really wanted.
The two did have some smoking hot chemistry, even when they weren't interested in each other at the start. I really loved what Mark did at the end, how he was willing to change his whole life for her so that she could have her dream. But better was Sabrina's answer, it was perfect for them both.
Bad Influence is listed as the 3rd book in Nicholas’s Bad Boys of the Bayou series. I don’t really know why? As the author readily acknowledges at the beginning of each book this is a series that consists of books she’d previously written as standalones that had no connection to each other. She clearly states that it doesn’t matter in what order you read them in. She has attempted to loosely cobble them together into a series spinoff of her Boys of the Bayou and Boys of the Bayou Gone Wild series which took place in the imaginary location of the small Louisiana bayou town of Autre. In that series the nearby bayou town of Bad is frequently mentioned as Autre’s friendly rivals. Loosely being the key word here as her attempt to turn these previous standalone books into an interconnected series has only modest success. Which because I love to read series where characters from one book make frequent appearances in the other books in the series drove me a little bit crazy. Because in this book beyond all taking place in the town of Bad and some characters being briefly mentioned in each other’s books there’s very little connection between each book in the series. I will say that in this book Brooke Donovan the female protagonist from Bad Medicine the technically 2nd book in this series has a fairly large secondary role as this book’s female protagonist Sabrina Cassidy’s BFF. Brooke being married to her late husband Jonathan Williams or dating or married to her new husband Nick Silver was never mentioned in this story. So I’m left wondering if it took place in the six or seven month interval between the time Jonathan died and Nick entered the picture? Well, at least it’s more than the connection the author made between the first and second books in the series where Pricilla Young, that books protagonist, barely rates a mention in the next book. Sorry but I’ve already admitted I’m a bit anal when it comes to reading series which really isn’t a good thing when reading this series. Sabrina Cassidy left her hometown of Bad, her abusive father and her childhood BFF and white knight Luke immediately after graduating from college. A talented singer and musician Sabrina had dreams of becoming the next Carrie Underwood or Maren Morris. It’s six years later now and a pregnant and broke Sabrina finds herself stuck in a little Alabama town even smaller than Bad with no money to fix her broke down car or even catch a bus home to Bad. With a baby on the way Sabrina recognizes she must rearrange her priorities and stop making some of the bad decisions that have led her to where she is. Giving up her dreams of becoming a singing star and returning to Bad where her friend Brooke a physicians assistant can provide her with medical care through her pregnancy and her other friends can provide some emotional support while raising a child is her new plan. Reluctantly after trying unsuccessfully to reach Brooke and a few other friends in Bad she calls the garage Luke owns. Unknowingly she gets his adoptive brother and best friend Marc Sterling instead. Okay, the idea that after a few seconds of talking to Marc on a landline she doesn’t realize she’s not talking to Luke is pretty unbelievable. But that’s the author’s story and she’s sticking to it. Marc under the same impression as most of Bad that Luke has always been in love with Sabrina and that Sabrina has taken advantage of his feelings for her to always get her out of jams which has prevented Luke from finding happiness with a woman who really loves him doesn’t want Sabrina back in Luke’s life where he will forsake looking for the right woman to take care of Sabrina. Why even though Sabrina has been gone for six years and hasn’t spoken directly to Luke in all of that time and he still hasn’t found a woman to settle down with doesn’t seem to clue in Marc that Sabrina wasn’t Luke’s issue. I also don’t know why since Sabrina left Bad with Luke’s encouragement because he truly believed it was the best thing for her, she has only spoken to Brooke and not Luke who was closer than a brother to her until she graduated from college is never really clear to me? Even if no one else knew it, she knew that Luke didn’t have romantic feelings for her he needed to get over so it seems to me going radio silent on him is an odd way to treat your best friend who had always been there for you. Anyway Marc despite not being Sabrina’s biggest fan and not wanting her back in Luke’s life isn’t a total dick. He agrees to drive the six hours to Alabama to pick her up. But he has no intention of brining her back to Bad. The scene where he literally tries to physically force Sabrina to get on a plane to anywhere but Bad was also unbelievable. Like airport security was ever going to let that happen. Marc’s problems with Sabrina are now two-fold. Not only does he not want her disrupting Luke’s love life that doesn’t really exist but he's finding himself powerfully attracted to her. Which after the previous night Sabrina is ready to acknowledge they have serious sexual chemistry. Since this review has already gone on for too long I’ll make this brief. The rest of the story is Marc realizing he’s in love with Sabrina, trying to keep her from moving in with Luke where she plans to co-habitat as friends and jointly raise her child because, a. he’s in love with her so if she’s going to live with anyone in Bad he wants it to be her and b. He want’s Luke to be free to find a woman who loves him which he knows will never happen once Sabrina moves in with him. And c. He believes her true happiness lies with performing on stage so he’s trying to push her in that direction even if it means losing her. Sort of the “If you love something let it go and if it never comes back it never really loved you” thing. Believe it or not for all of my criticisms I still found this a pretty entertaining enemies to lovers trope. The relationships between Luke and Sabrina, Marc and Sabrina and Luke and Marc were interesting. All three were good people trying to support each other in the best ways they knew how. You could really feel the explosive sexual tension and chemistry between Marc and Sabrina and when they got together it was HOT. I would have appreciated an epilogue showing Marc and Sabrina’s life together a little into the future since it’s pretty unlikely it will show up in future books in this series based upon the fact that Pricilla and Jase’s or Brooke’s and Nick’s haven’t.
Bad Influence by Erin Nicholas is part of her Bad Boys of the Bayou series, set in Bad, Louisiana.
Marc Sterling and Sabrina Cassidy have been clearly not-friends for years, connected by their relationship with Luke Hamilton, their best friend. Sabrina left town to pursue her dreams but due to a big change in circumstances, she’s heading back to regroup. Marc wants nothing more than to keep his BFF’s safe and his world unrocked. Even if it means physically barring Sabrina from getting to him.
Erin Nicholas’s story is hot and emotional and fabulous. Love getting to know the Bad gang!
I loved seeing Marc and Sabrina slowly get to know each other better, with their long-held perceptions shifting as they learn more about the other. And Erin Nicholas does an excellent job with their incredible chemistry, which is absolutely combustible. Marc and Sabrina are both strong personalities, bold and generally forthright, and caring deeply about their friends.
Bad Influence is a fantastic story that reminds us of how life changes when you are loved by someone who truly sees you and not only does not want to change you, but appreciates the things that make you who you are. It's one for the keeper shelf.
This has been my favorite of the series (and I've truly loved them all)!
Marc takes matters into his own hands when Sabrina calls looking for his best friend, Luke. No way is he going to.let her pull him back into her orbit and mess with his head. Except it's Marc who falls for Sabrina and she falls right back.
The banter between these two is hilarious and sexy and spot on. The heat is high (who knew pie filling could be so sexy?). And emotions run high as enemies turn to lovers. Definitely worth a reread!
Marc never knew the extent of Sabrina's attachment to his BF and Brother Luke. It wasn't until he intercepted a call to Luke and decided to put a stop to Sabrina coming back to Bad and ruining Luke's life. Luke was Sabrina's go to, her protector and it started when they were kids. When Marc was the one to show up to grab Sabrina she was shocked to say the least. Marc was not a big fan of Sabrina so he thought and he felt he couldn't let her come back to Bad after six years of being away. As Enemies to Lovers go it turns out Marc and Sabrina couldn't understand the chemistry between them. Sabrina always thought he hated her and Marc thought she was just leading Luke on. When all the dirty laundry was exposed it was like a light bulb went off in Marc's head. Everything started to make sense. And when Sabrina blurts out she's pregnant at the airport Marc didn't believe her. Oh the ride out of there was something else. Just a tidbit Sabrina left Bad for many reasons but one was a music career. She was gone for six years and a series of events forced to come back to Bad. Sabrina was smart and super talented and she and Marc were falling in love. She was offered a chance to compete in Vegas for up and coming musicians. But she was already way into Marc and didn't want to go. Marc forced her to go and made it seem like what they were was just temporary and fun and games where in actuality his heart was breaking. She had to go so she could have no regrets or what ifs. If she came back to him then that meant she chose him. Great read
Romance trope: enemies to lovers Series: Bad Boys of the Bayou Length: 297 pages
Plot: Sabrina's been away from home for about 6 years now when she calls Luke for help. She doesn't get ahold of her former best friend, though; instead, his brother Marc answers. Marc has always hated Sabrina because Luke feels obligated to help her and will ruin his own life trying. Marc pretends to be Luke and meets Sabrina in the small town where she is stuck. He plans to rescue her and send her on her way - anything to keep her from coming home and messing things up for Luke again. But things aren't as simple as they seem and Marc and Sabrina might be better off as...something other than enemies.
Commentary: I liked the way the story ended (Sabrina finally able to pursue her dream with support from someone who is completely in her corner) but I feel like we never got a really good explanation for why Marc hated her. I got that he was worried about his brother (and maybe if he had known what was going on he could have helped instead of hated) but I wish there would have been some blow-up fights where Marc and Sabrina could have let each other have it before they got to the point of hating each other. Or I wish Luke could have been less circumspect and asked for help as a little kid so that Sabrina could have been saved in an easier way. I guess in the end, I'm not the world's biggest enemies to lovers fan.
it was a small town romance, where it had infuriating characters, a confusing plot, and an unexpected pregnancy that seemed absolutely inevitable because it didn’t add anything to the plot.
It seemed unfinished. It had a lot of plot holes, and a lot of things were extremely confusing. As i said, it had a somewhat of a love triangle?
first we have Marc and Sabrina. Marc hates Sabrina, because his best friend and adoptive brother, Luke, seems to always run to her rescue and she does not acknowledge his feelings (even though they were never together, Luke never mentioned being in love with her or anything like that). So, from that point on, extremely strange dynamics.
The plot holes made everything entirely too confusing and complicated, the pregnancy was unnecessary, she never got money? or a stable job? or anything in particular. She lost all of her money, she did not end up singing in that Las Vegas shit, i mean idk. We went through all that trouble for nothing?
in the end, would i recommend? No, but if you are bored and need something light, go ahead and read it. However don’t expect to understand anything from it.
this review was so bad because there wasn’t much to be said about it. Because literally nothing happened… 👀
but oh well, 🤨 i found it in a way very funny tho, if that helps it’s case…
Oh my gosh!!! I absolutely loved this story. I'm a big fan of Erin Nicholas anyway but with this one, she blew it out of the water. I love enemy to friends and this one definitely is. Bickering. Sex. And be sure to have Kleenex nearby for the tears. Sabrina is coming back to Bad, Louisiana but her car breaks down. It seems if she didn't have bad luck she'd have no luck at all. She lost all her money when her identity was stolen. She's pregnant. And now she's stranded in a little town with no money. She calls her best friend and she thinks she's talking to Luke but it's Marc. Marc is Luke's best friend and adopted brother. He knows how Sabrina wraps Luke around her little finger so he goes to get her. His plan is to take her to an airport, give her some money, and send her far away from Bad and Luke. But the opposite happens. She refuses to go away and the more Marc learns about Sabrina, the harder he falls for her. She's invited to a singing competition but decides not to go. Marc wants her to stay but also wants her to live her dreams. Will he give up the woman he has fallen for to make her happy?
This is especially true in this book. Sabrina left town years ago and didn't plan on ever coming back. When she ends up pregnant with no money to her name she has no choice but to go home and ask for help. Marc has always hated his best friends/brothers obsession with Sabrina. He has always blames her for the reason he doesn't want ever make any kind of relationship work. When he intercepts a call intended for Luke from Sabrina asking for help Marc takes it upon himself to get rid of her. It doesn't take much time for Marc to realize he wants her but won't allow himself to have her because he is convinced Luke is in love with her. Or is he? I love how Marc really tries to do the right thing for her even if it means letting her go. Such a sweet story!
Cute story about Marc who doesn’t like Sabrina, falling in love with her and vice versa. The whole Luke rescue complex was nice but then weird when he proposed he’d be the co-parent her baby needed. I mean he has some savior complex. It was too weird. No girl wants to put up with that, so I get why all the girlfriends couldn’t handle it when they were teens. Even as adults, what woman would want her man playing daddy to his “friend’s” baby? I mean, thankfully he wasn’t in a relationship when he offers, it’s just weird he feels like he needs to save Sabrina in that way. Sabrina needed to know she could do it on her own. Him always swooping in wasn’t really helping now that they’re adults and she’s not living in her own father’s house.
Nevertheless, Marc was sweet (and for a moment a ginormous asshole) and their HEA seems very cute.
Loved the storyline here - Sabrina and Marc have a connection through Luke, who was Sabrina's protector and good friend while she was growing up in Bad. Now Sabrina is coming home because she has nowhere else to go, and gets stranded when her car dies a few hundred miles from town. As she did in the past, she calls Luke. But Marc, Luke's adopted brother, intercepts the call, and decides HE will go and 'rescue' Sabrina, thinking of some way to keep her out of Bad and protecting his brother too while he's at it. Of course, things don't always go according to plan, and that was the beauty of this storyline. The sparks between Marc and Sabrina were awesome (and believable), and along the way, they both figured out how strong they are - together and apart.
Marc is trying to save his brother, Luke, from Sabrina when she calls and asks for help. Sabrina thinks she is talking to Luke, but its' really Marc. When Marc picks Sabrina up and tries to drop her off at the airport and that doesn't work. These two spend a night and six hours driving and get to know each other. Sabrina tells Marc the reason that Luke is so protective of her and Marc realizes that he didn't know Sabrina at all. Marc now feels protective of Sabrina and starts to develop feelings for her. Sabrina realizes she misjudged Marc when they were growing up and what a great guy he is. Marc feels he knows what's best for Sabrina and Sabrina is trying to show Marc that what she wants is in Bad. Loved this book!!
get that they have known each other for years, but it was a little unbelievable that they instantly were attracted to each other. The first time she kissed him made absolutely no sense to me and it was honestly annoying that every time something happened between them they just moved on as if it didn’t. Can’t deny that the scenes were spicy, but it felt so out of place sometimes. I didn’t like Luke and how pushy he was and the main character was a damsel in distress more than anything. I get her dad was supposed to be a lot point, but he was included like three times? I expected a lot more to happen with that and it fell flat. I won’t be reading the other stories.
Marc and Sabrina grew up in Bad not liking each other too much. She's been gone for six years after college and she's returning to their hometown of Bad, LA. Turns out maybe they just needed to know each other a bit more. Maybe they were too busy protecting their friend Luke from each other to see their real truth. Sabrina's a free spirited, talented musician; Marc is a dyed in the wool, adopted, home boy who sees no reason to leave Bad or his restaurant Bad Brews. So the transitions they both must make are major, also touching, humorous and sexy. And the resulting love and match is perfect.
Marc is brought to his knees by the sexy, sweet Sabrina, he suddenly develops a twinge in his chest, a tightening in his stomach and he cannot get her out of his mind. None of this is eased when he learns about her past...and everything he thought he knew is shattered. He becomes more attracted, more protective and more confused! We just want more Bad! These Bad boys are actually very, very good and almost irresistible. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
It's more a second chance romance than enemies to lovers. Sabrina had his attention from day one and he wanted hers. But she has Luke and Luke was his best friend too. So, rather than admit he's jealous of his best friend and had an unrequited crush. He blamed her for being the source of his problems. She didn't understand the antagonist responses and just has nothing to do with him. Proximity and time make everything clear for both of them. It was cute but nothing mind blowing.
This one took me a minute to get into but I ended up enjoying the story! I wasn’t a Sabrina fan at first but learning more about his background did explain some of the reasons behind the things that seemed, as Marc said, “selfish and egocentric.”
Marc was coming from what he thought was a good place but his actions came off as high-handed and he was a real jerk to Sabrina at times. He more than made up for it by the end, but still……
The relationship between the lead characters is strained at first, mostly due to gaps in information that led to misconceptions. Once they both got past that, things heated up, only to potentially fall apart over lack of honest communication. The plot was well-written and the characters realistic in many aspects. Another winner from Ms. Nicholas. Highly recommended.
Sigh! I just didn’t like this one. It was a little disjointed and didn’t flow well.
I also didn’t like h. Technically, she did use men, mostly Luke, and it was gross. She was a mess. Even during the 3 rd act breakup, she was using Luke. Had him out shopping for baby stuff and was fully planning on shacking up with him. Eek plus, she was trying to make H jealous AND she knew it was working. I can honestly see why Marc wouldn’t like her. That was MORE believable than him falling for her.
While Marc starts out as a complete ass, he does redeem himself quickly once he learns the reasons why his brother and best friend always dropped everything to get to Sabrina when they were younger and she called. I love how they both developed throughout this story and finally find their way to their own HEA. Another masterpiece from Erin Nicholas.
Sabrina wants to live the singers life. She lives to sing and play instruments. When she runs into bad luck and calls her best friend to help her out … his brother Marc shows up! They can’t stand each other and Mar. wants her away from his brother. Well of course they each have a different plan about that.
Love the bad boys of the bayou. This serious isn't as location centric as boys of the bayou and the style of the books is different, but Erin Nicholas does not fail to use her magic pen and leave lasting good feels after reading! Have loved EVERY single one of her books that I've read!!!
I love this series! Wish I would have grown up in Bad!
Marc is a talented chef and Sabrina is a gifted singer/songwriter. Sabrina left Bad for six years for a very good reason. When she returns, she and Marc continue to bump heads as they did before she left. I highly recommend this book and series! It's a great read! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Started off very promising but it lost me after 67% in and thennn i skimmed through and read the last 2 chapters (ok yes i skipped a lot of it too but i read the main parts) and i was unhappy / unsatisfied with the ending..
But thats me, you might like it. My recommendation? Skip it if you can guys or give it a try maybe you'll like or love it more than me!
Absolutely loved the facelift so to speak could no wait to finish them all. Did not realize how much I needed the town of Bad LA in my life but after all the Landry family books in Autre La I really and truly did need Bad La to have its own story line as well. It only made it more tangible.
The characters were well developed, and the story an interesting addition to the series. The sizzle started with the slow burn and developed as it did the characters. Looking forward to book number 4.
This is Marc and Sabrina's story and Marc certainly harboured a lot of misconceptions about Sabrina at the start of the book. Enemies to lovers isn't my favourite trope, but this was a good read, which packed an emotional punch.
Bad isn't as good as Autre but I love it too. This book was incredible. Two people who are enemies and very different fall in love while fighting their attraction for each other. I recommend this book.
