2022 Review
As I predicted below, the perfect book to pick up on the day of the first snowfall.
2021 Review
After the mild disappointment of The Wood Between the Worlds, I'm pleased that Lucy Steps through the Wardrobe does a much better job with adapting the story of Narnia into a picture book. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the only place to start the Narniad, and the first few chapters adapted here brought all the magic back for me. This is why we named our dog Pevensie. This is why we have a "Spare Oom" sign on our guest bedroom door.
My favorite details were Maze's book titles in Mr. Tumnus's home. The ones named in the text are present: Nymphs and Their Ways, Is Man a Myth?. Some are Maze's own invention, and show a precious appreciation of Narnia: The First Joke, Liberation of the Lone Islands. I mean, this is the type of content we Narnia fans are here for. Young readers exploring this book on their own will have a solid foothold when entering the Narniad because of charming details like these. Again, I think this would be a lovely accompaniment to look at while listening to the audiobook.
Lucy Steps through the Wardrobe captures the always-winter-never-Christmas atmosphere so well, I was ready to curl up with a cup of hot chocolate while snow fell, but alas, it is still Very Humid and Very Hot where I live and that was a rude awakening. This is just the type of book I would ritually read during the year's first snowfall. Hasten the day! (For those of us who thrive on the chill and brisk, that is.)
