The Roaming Adventurer

I won’t be bridled by anyone… or so I thought.

My name is Boone Colter, and all I ever wanted was to focus on my career as a surveyor. Build up my business. Explore the wilderness. Then I met her, and she lied to me, putting me in a difficult position. I ought to let her deal with the mess she made.

But Mama raised me to make honorable choices. If I do, are we gonna be stuck with each other until death do us part? Will that come sooner than I think?

Only thing I know for certain, 1890 will change my life in ways no one could have foreseen.

The Roaming Adventurer is the second book in the Colter Sons series by Karen Baney. This story takes off after the first, so it is best to read this series in order. The author does a good job of giving background information and reintroducing the characters, so it also a good stand alone story. I just love this story and enjoyed catching up with the characters. In this story we get to know Boone, the adventuresome Colter brother. I enjoyed his explanation as to why he chose the surveyor career. In this story we see another woman who has chosen a career path usually held by men. Jack knows her job very well, but she did not get the job by being honest.

The author shows the dangers surveyor jobs and the many things they need to do. I appreciated how Boone was able to put himself between his family members to help his older brother succeed in his career with as little impact on the family farm as possible. It was interesting to see how inflexible Sam was with the situation.

This is a fun story to read that included romance, friendships, family, and danger. I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

TRIGGER WARNING: Deals with miscarriages and traumatic injury resulting in death
Boone and Jack both love the job of a surveyor and have no desire to settle down. Boone is impressed with how good Jack is at the job, but there's something that's not sitting right with him about Jack. It's not until there's an accident and Jack is injured that he figures out what it is. Jack is actually Jacqueline!!! He hired a female to be part of his crew unchaperoned!!! Now they have to get married to save their names. Will they be able to make a life together? What will their families say? Can she continue to do the job now that he knows the truth? When tragedy strikes will it draw them closer or apart?
I received a copy of this book from the author in both ebook and audio. Review voluntarily given.

The shotgun wedding story really drew me in. It really was a great story. Boone and Jack had their problems, but they worked together. My favorite character was Boone’s mother. Her scenes were so funny.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Jacklyn and Boone 💞

Another super romantic story! Boone and Jacklyn survived so many trials and storms of life… but it was also what drew them closer together ❤️

Boone Colter is the third son and he a wild one. I got many chuckles reading about his parents struggles with him and all of his shenanigans. So, his career choice of a surveyor suited him well. He liked to live life a little more dangerously than the rest of his family. Working for his brother James as a surveyor for the railroad brings him across a certain young lady, Jaclyn Bennett. Or as Boone first knows her as Jack.

Jaclyn has worked since a young age with her father as an assistant surveyor for him. Now that she is of marriageable age, her father would like her to forget that life and settle down as a married woman. Not so for Jaclyn, as she has an adventurous streak as well. So, she hires herself out to Boone's team disguised as a man.

Well, obviously things don't go as planned. Accidents happen, truths come out, and to protect reputations an unplanned marriage takes place. Boone and Jaclyn must learn to navigate their wills, wants, and needs now with one another. I think Jaclyn was a great match for Boone's adventurous streak. I really enjoyed their romance growing as a married couple with all life has for them, in joys and heartbreaks.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

The Roaming Adventurer
Colter Sons #2
Karen Baney

Boone Colter has finally decided to open his own office as a surveyor and needs to hire a crew. Time is of the essence as he has a job that needs to be done as soon as possible, routing a new railroad line. When Jack Bennett applies for the job, he seems a perfect fit with his experience. There's just one problem "Jack" is actually Jaclyn.

Jaclyn's plan is working perfectly, and her disguise has fooled everyone. Until she gets hurt and her secret is revealed. With Jaclyn's reputation ruined, Boone does what he can to protect her by offering to marry her.

Marriage wasn't something either Boone or Jaclyn was contemplating when suddenly it was thrust upon them. Can they make it work, or will the entire situation make them resent one another and their marriage?

The Roaming Adventurer is the second book in the Colter Sons series, and it picks up a couple years after The Reluctant Cattleman. It is interesting to revisit the Colter family and see how it has changed. The relationship between the brothers is definitely a tangled mess, and one has to wonder just what makes them each the way they are. Overall this is a good story with emotional peaks and valleys as life unfolds.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest review. All thoughts expressed are my own.

*I received a digital copy from the author for participation in the blog tour. This does not affect my review. This review is voluntary.*

I enjoyed Sam's book (bk. 1) and loved Preston's (bk.5) so I was excited to read more of the Colter Sons series! I admit, I wasn't a big fan of Boone, (or James honestly....) after reading Sam's story, but saw that they both became more likeable, at least somewhat, later on in Preston's story. So, after clearly reading these out of order, I went back to read this one.

I'm happy to say it was a great choice! I ended up loving this one, and was honestly pleasantly surprised by some twists that I hadn't expected in his story! I also adored his deep sense of love, devotion, and his quiet sense of faith that was much deeper than I'd expected. His way of expressing it are unique and his own, but I loved that seeing that he did care about Truth, and I loved seeing that grow and develop as well as his story goes on. The character growth for both Jack and Boone were well done in this story, and easily one of the things I loved most in their story!

I really enjoy how this series doesn’t follow the normal pattern of oldest to youngest in telling the story.

The Roaming Adventurer started out with a hook that got me and it continued to hold my attention because of the characters.

Here are three reasons this book may intrigue you too!

1. It has a shotgun wedding!
2. The character’s introspection about the decisions they made and the consequences was very thought-provoking.
3. The strength and development of the characters, Karen Baney does not shy away from making her characters take on tough jobs and subjects.
**Bonas: It’s a FAMILY Saga!

Overall, I found this book to be enjoyable and I am looking forward to seeing where book three will take me.

4 Stars.

*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback.

This story follows the adventures of another son- Boone and surveyor Jaclyn from California. Jaclyn travels to Prescott, Arizona to help survey the area for the railroad with Boone and his crew.

I enjoyed this story alot more than the first one. I found the plot and characters more exciting and I liked reading about the adventures of surveying. I can’t wait to read more the Colter family and their experiences.

I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
