Arranged around 17 themed menus for favorite family events and activities, Five Marys Family Style takes the reader on a journey through the seasons and customs that drive life on the ranch. Featuring more than 75 rustic, hearty recipes, inside readers will discover the Heffernan family's Thanksgiving and Christmas traditions, menus for a cozy fireside dinner, a summer cookout, a pack-ahead picnic, or an end-of-week taco fiesta. Sprinkled throughout the book are simple, crafty DIY projects that Mary and her four daughters have fun making together, including indigo-dyed tea towels, flower-filled holiday table runners, and hand-rolled beeswax candles. Along the way, Mary shares stories of life on the ranch as well as the faithful traditions and strong connections she maintains with her extended family. Lush photography captures the expansive beauty of the ranch, the animals, including dogs, cats, and horses, and of course, Mary and her beloved husband and ranching co-partner, Brian.

Five Marys Family Style Recipes and Traditions from the Ranch Author: Mary Heffernan
eARC & Cookbook Review Publish Date: September 27, 2022
My rating: 5/5 ⭐️
Following her first cookbook, Five Marys Ranch Raised, Mary Heffernan is back with another standout! In this one, Heffernan reveals family life on the ranch through their shared meals, traditions, and crafts.
This truly was a beautiful and artistic cookbook. From the introduction to the end, it was filled with delicious recipes, warming stories, and fantastic images. I personally loved how it was broken up by seasons, really showing how versatile this cookbook could be.
It featured a ton of yummy recipes that I cannot wait to dive into. Some of my favorites were the Icebox Pull-Apart Rolls, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and Our Family’s Lamb Ravioli. The recipes were easy to follow and featured ingredients that are easy to find at most grocery stores. On top of that, the food images were well staged and photographed.
As mentioned before, this was more than just a cookbook. It featured seasonal crafts, ranch traditions, and cocktail recipes! I loved getting to read about their ranch traditions and see what seasonal crafts they make. The addition of the cocktails was genius! Again, it was all broken out by season, giving readers and home cooks inspiration throughout the year.
I have said it a lot in his review, but this cookbook truly was beautiful! The recipes, traditions, and pictures were so well done. I cannot wait to pick up a hard copy of this book.
Thank you Net Galley, Sasquatch Books, and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
3.5 stars rounded up. This cookbook focuses on a menu for different events instead of just a collection of recipes. The author uses a lot of whole foods and many different diy than you usuly see in a cookbook. There are also fun ideas for crafts alongside the recipes. There are many more ideas throughout the book than what us listed under the menu and there are many beautiful pictures throughout to engage the reader. I do wish things were organized differently and that the recipes were easier to follow. But a great cookbook for those who love to cook.
The photos are stunning! The anecdotes were interesting and well written. The recipes are easy to follow and include healthy, whole ingredients. I enjoyed how this cookbook was laid out but to be frank, I didn't find that many recipes that I would make. This would be great for an adventorous eater but for this suburban mom, I'm not sure it works for my family and our needs.
Beautiful ranch cookbook! I loved her first cookbook and this was is just as good. The recipes look mouthwatering and they have great photos. This cookbook is divided by seasons, starting with Winter and then Spring, Summer and Fall. There are many recipes in this book that I would try at home. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
Five Marys Family Style is a lovely and well photographed style/inspiration guide with recipes by Mary Heffernan. Released 27th Sept 2022 by Sasquatch Books, it's 336 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is a lovely book, lavishly illustrated and full of good food, well prepared and presented. There are lots of photos from the Heffernan family's celebrations along with their ranch and surroundings. The book is arranged around seasonal celebrations which are further divided into 13 menus with all the trimmings. There are traditional holiday celebrations and recipes (Christmas, Easter, etc) as well as more informal entertaining and fun gatherings (Fiesta Friday, and a rodeo picnic).
Ingredient measurements are supplied in imperial (American) measurements only. Descriptions are contained in the header for each recipe. The nutritional information is not included. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in headers with the recipe descriptions. The recipes themselves are beautifully finished with lots of nice unexpected juxtapositions of flavor and texture, for example sheet-pan pork tenderloin served with delicata squash, kale and Brussels sprouts (!?) - amazing and delicious. Many of the recipes are meat heavy, it's a ranch cookbook. There are a significant number of meat-free recipes however, and the overall quality of the writing and neat and hearty fusion style of the foods will allow vegetarians a surprising amount of use for the recipes in the book - notably all of the sauces, condiments, dressings, marinades, and other flavor enhancers (and there are a pile of them) can be adapted to meat-free uses.
The production values are top notch, and yes, the book features their "instagram perfect" family (which few of us can possibly achieve), however, it's honestly written with such warmth and candor that I found myself admiring them going for their dreams and raising their lovely family in a gorgeous rural setting. Serving suggestions for the dishes are beautifully presented and appropriate.
Five stars. Definitely an inspirational book full of useful unfussy full menus and good food to share with loved ones and friends.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Five Marys Family Style is either a memoir style cookbook or a cookbook a la memoir, but it doesn’t matter. It’s a fabulous peek into the life of Mary Heffernan, her husband Brian and 4 other family-Marys. In fact I have not been so engaged with Marys since I spent 4th grade at St. Elezbeth’s and had 5 Marys in my class. . I love the author’s chatty style of writing. Reading this book is like getting a glimpse into life on the ranch and hanging with your friend, exchanging recipes.
The book has comfort food, healthy salads, cocktails and many DIY projects. Each recipe or project comes with a story that gives the readers a taste of ranch life. I’m so happy that the author included lots of photographs both of the ranch, the family and the food. For me the photos are as important as the ingredient list and directions in a cookbook. I get lost in cookbooks that leave me wondering if what I’ve produced is what the author intended. There’s 17 themes that all come with a wide range of recipes. From healthy to belly busting.
The Little House Dinner section has a One-Pan Spicy Meatball Bake. Snow Day Dinner includes a warming Meyer Lemon Tot Toddy. Make Ahead Dinner for Six has a DIY project: Make your own Beeswax Wraps (I’ve been purchasing mine on line). I think my favorite is the Easter Sunday Supper recipe for Artichokes with Preserved-Lemon Aioli. You get the idea. There’s a little something for everyone. This is just a tiny taste of all the love and goodness that Mary Heffernan has shared in this wonderful cookbook. Believe me, this is one you’re going to want to add to your shelf.
The Five Marys Family Style cookbook is like going to the ranch and spending the day with the family. There is so much family tradition and beloved recipes included in this book that you get a true sense of Mary's heritage and who she is, plus a look at how she got to where she is now. I loved the many pictures that are included, they seem authentic and exemplary of the content in the book. I love when I can look at a recipe in a cookbook and see a picture of what it is supposed to (hopefully when I’m done with it) look like.
The layout is different from a normal cookbook but I like it, it works with the content delivered. The book is sectioned into the 4 seasons, and then special recipes and notes for the holidays in those seasons. There are not only recipes for food but also for decor and crafts, which is so cool! The chapters have family stories woven throughout which makes it very interesting and connects you to their family and why they do what they do. There is a small section on 10 different things you can do with ground beef, kind of a quick guide. I thought this was brilliant and something that anyone who cooks would appreciate. The only downside to this book is that I feel like some of the recipes are things only someone who lives on a ranch that raises meat would cook, the ingredients would either be too hard to find or too expensive for the everyday person. But there is more than enough to make up for that in the rest of the book.
Five Marys Family Style: Recipes and Traditions from the Ranch is the second excellent cookbook from Mary Heffernan who includes recipes from her entire family which includes four daughters, all named Mary, as well as herself and her husband Brian. This cookbook includes 17 menus that reflect the ranch lifestyle. The recipes are written in the traditional manner and are easy to follow. What is most important, however, is that the recipes are very appealing. There is a menu for every hostess who wants to have guests for dinner not only for special occasions and holidays, but anytime.
This cookbook includes beautiful photographs, not only of the mouthwatering dishes, but also the family (adorable daughters, animals, ranch scenery, and other fun subjects) ranch; there are vignettes and stories of life on the ranch, which makes this cookbook one that can be read while curled up in a corner. It is well-written and interesting.
What’s nice about this cookbook is that the menus are not only doable, but the dishes go together well, so it takes the task of finding side dishes or desserts to go with the main dish. The main dishes are not too fancy so everyone will like them, especially the cook because they are easy to prepare. This is a fun cookbook to add to a first-rate cookbook collection. It’s a fun one to cook from.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Right after I requested this book for review, my doctor gave me an extremely strict diet to follow, so I wasn't able to try any of the recipes and am only reviewing this as how it appears. (I do plan to make some of the granola in this cookbook, but haven't yet). The photography accompanying the recipes is beautiful. Pictures of life on the farm add a personal touch to the book. As a mom of four feeding six people a night, I really appreciate the serving sizes of the dishes - definitely enough food will be made for a larger crew. There are several "full menu" sections, giving the reader the chance to put together a party without wondering if mains/sides/appetizers/drinks will go together. Five Marys Family Style is also divided by season, and I love cookbooks like that. Gives the reader a chance to lean into seasonal produce and flavors.

Fabulous story...enticing recipes..fun diy projects, and the feeling of family encompassed into the pages. Family style is definitely weaved through out the entire cookbook. Five stars for an all around book!
What did I like? There’s more than recipes here. The whole book was really heart warming. They really seem to care about the animals, and absolute mouth watering pictures. From drinks, to appetizers, mains, events.... just literally something for everyone. I really loved how they added diy projects.
Would I recommend or buy? I would love love love a copy for my shelf. So many recipes so little time. I bookmarked a few to try. I’m definitely trying the Manhattan’s! Truly a gorgeous almost three hundred paged book! Fabulous diy projects, and a very interesting story. Five stars. Grab a copy!
This is a beautiful book with lots of recipes for larger groups, along with cocktail and entertaining ideas. The book is organized seasonally and includes a craft project in each section. I loved the backstories - there was just enough of a glimpse into the author's personal life and ranch history to keep things meaningful and interesting. It should go without saying but since they own a ranch, a lot of the recipes are meat-based.
This book was more commercial than I remember the first one being - they reference their spice blend, burger restaurant several times and even their online Ranch School. But the recipes are sound, and the book is a pleasure to read.
An excellent cookbook for those of us that like the Pioneer Woman's recipes. Ranch style living does away with the frills in exchange for a good, nutritious meal that will keep everyone healthy and happy. Ive tried many of the recipes from their first cookbook so was excited to see another. This one shares recipes and ideas for family gatherings, holiday or not, you still have to feed the crew.
Easy to follow recipes that produce excellent results, even for beginner cooks, and use everyday pantry items. No reason to keep extra ingredients for one recipe. The best thing you can do for yourself is open the book to any page and start cooking.
3.5 stars rounded up. This cookbook focuses on a menu for different events instead of just a collection of recipes. The author uses a lot of whole foods and many different diy than you usuly see in a cookbook. There are also fun ideas for crafts alongside the recipes. This is more than a cookbook and readers who just want recipes may not enjoy the stories and backgrounds. I do however and found the ranch life interesting. I loved the stories of family events and food served. The recipes look wonderful. They are not super easy or fast and do require ingredients that might not be easy to find. I'm sure they taste wonderful though. Sometimes the extra time is well spent! I look forward to trying some of these recipes and creating my own memories. I read this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of “Five Mary’s Family Style” by Mary Heffernan. This is an absolutely GORGEOUS cookbook featuring recipes from the author’s working ranch. I liked intro and background about the author’s family at the beginning, followed by a number of seriously mouthwatering recipes. The book is organized by seasons and the photography is breathtaking. I can’t wait to work my way through all the different meals!
This book is filled with family , food and love. Included are recipes fit for a hungry family and DIY crafts to make your house feel like home. If you follow 5Marysfarm on social media this book is a perfect accent to their content. It makes you feel like you are right on the ranch!
I received a free copy of this book from #netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Mary Heffernan's new cookbook is a beautiful collection of recipes that all look very good and would feed a family pretty easily. The illustrations and narrative in the book are also very pretty, neat and help the reader gain a better sense of understanding the American heartland and ranch lifestyle. I will definitely be making recipes from this book!
In Five Marys we learn that the Five Marys are her four daughters each named Marysomething and herself. Included in the book are beautiful photos of the ranch in all four seasons. The book is divided into the four seasons. Each includes hardy recipes with seasonal ingredients. She includes some ingredients that I am not as familiar with such as leaf lard. There are fun crafts included.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. What a great book. The pictures are beautiful and the recipes look really easy and easy to follow.
