Owen Davey’s popular non-fiction series continues with a captivating and stunningly illustrated guide to penguins.Did you know that penguins can hold their breath for over half an hour? Or that they can swim four times faster than an Olympic swimmer? And they don’t just live in icy Antarctica! You can find them on sandy beaches in South Africa and other more tropical locations too.Dive into this fascinating illustrated guide to our feathered friends, the penguins. From the tiny fairy penguin that is no bigger than a ruler, to the emperor penguin that is over a metre tall, find out where they live, what they eat and how we can protect them.
Owen Davey describes his style as contemporary and nostalgic and likes to use a palette of warm, muted colors. His work has been featured in the New York Times and Jamie Oliver's food magazine. Owen has had many knightly adventures of his own where he lives in Bristol, England.
Like the matte nature of the physical book. Fun, colorful, graphic illustrations. A lot of information but presented in an engaging way. I’m not sure what the ideal age/interest is for this. Looking forward to others in the series.
5 stars for the illustrations alone, but excellent information too. My younger self would’ve treasured this book for YEARS! Even my much older self adores it.
I really enjoy the entire About Animals nonfiction series for kids from Owen Davey. The design style is unique and appeals well to the target age range: ages 7-10 years old. I love that each book is jam-packed with fascinating information about the featured animals. Passionate About Penguins is the 8th title in this series and will surely appeal to animal-loving children. They will love pouring through the pages of this book. Adults too!
I especially love the "to scale" page where a human is pictured along side 20 different Penguin species. This type of page occurs in the other books in the series as well. Illustrations are just as important to the learning and Owen Davey uses them thoughtfully throughout the book.
The text overall is quite a lot of information -- this would likely be too much to cover in one sitting for a 7 year old. That said, I think it's fun to have books to dive in and out of as interest leads for kids.
I think the information is nicely organized, and includes a table of contents and index. I also appreciate that the scientific information is paired with interesting historical and sociological information -- this brings interest and depth to the topic.
Overall I think this is fantastic and a lovely addition to the others in the already-stellar Owen Davey collection.
***Note: I was given a review copy of this book by Flying Eye Books. Opinions are my own.
I am absolutely thrilled with "The Great Penguin Parade" by Owen Davey! The beautiful illustrations showcase a variety of penguins in all their splendor and diversity. The informative texts complement the pictures perfectly, providing exciting insights into these captivating creatures.
While I would have appreciated a bit more depth in certain parts, it's important to keep in mind that this is a children's book. Nevertheless, it offers a wealth of colorful knowledge for young readers.
The book carries an important message at the end: humans need to treat nature more carefully and use less plastic. Despite its significance, I found the two paragraphs a bit out of place, as they don't quite align with the rest of the book.
Overall, I highly recommend "The Great Penguin Parade" to all animal lovers, young explorers, and penguin enthusiasts! Let's explore the fascinating world of penguins together!
This non-fiction children’s book is a wonderful resource to help children learn more about penguins, and there is certainly lots to learn, even for adults! The bright illustrations draw you in to every page as you learn about the different types of penguins, how their bodies are perfectly adapted for their needs and the fascinating way they rear their young.
The cover artwork of this book is absolutely stunning and throughout the book, the illustrations are clear and engaging. For younger children who are unable to read, there is plenty to look at on every page, and for older children who can read themselves, the information is in small digestible sections and clearly laid out on the page.
This book would make a wonderful addition to a home library or classroom.

This was a great, informative book about penguins! I'm intersted to read some of the other books in the series and purchase for my school library as the animal section is in desperate need of newer books!
Such a fun little read 🐧 If you know me then you know I am a little too interested in penguins… some may call it obsessed. When I saw this cute little book I couldn’t refuse. The illustrations are beautiful, bold and colourful. As a penguin lover I have learnt a lot about penguins throughout the years, yet this book held some new information for me to learn. Such a fun, fact filled book
