Rate this book
This copious compendium of all things odd could only have come from the people at Ripley's. Every page is brimming with information and eye-popping artwork, covering the extremes of every subject imaginable. Coincidences, survival, human anatomy, explorers, villains, laws, medicine, science, sports, war, weather--these are just a few of the topics explored in this unique volume.
This one-of-kind book has proved itself to be a formidable rival of the "Guinness Book of World Records" and will be welcomed by many fans of the Ripley's TV shows, museums, and syndicated newspaper features worldwide. The new edition is a great value for the money--a full-color hardcover at a paperback price.

Mooney, Julie, & Ripley's Believe It or Not. (2005). Ripley's Believe It or Not! Encyclopedia of the Bizarre. Bt Bound.

Citation created by- Amber Thompson

Call Number- 031

Description- 496 pages, paperback, color pictures

Content Scope- Black Dog & Leventhal’s bestselling Encyclopedia of the Bizarre is now available in a handier, more reasonably priced edition that retains every word and image of the original. From stupefying stunts to wacky world’s records, all of Ripley’s riveting findings are here, in an easy-to-browse, impossible-to-put-down color volume.

Accuracy/Authority- While Ripley’s books usually contain odd information, they are still a reliable source for children to view.

Arrangement/Presentation- This colorful, magical and mind-expanding volume is an encyclopedia that only the people at Ripley's Believe It or Not! could dream up. Every page is brimming with information and eye-popping artwork, covering the extremes of every subject imaginable. Bizarre and amazing categories include Accidents and Disasters, Animals and Insects, Archaeology, Feats and Stunts, Prophecies, Records, the Unexplained, and more.

Relation to Similar Works- There are several versions of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not books that kids and adults enjoy and find hard to put down!

Timeliness/Permanence- Encyclopedias are relevant for many years after they are published. They are great for past events and information, but anything that happened in the years after it was published will not be available through that encyclopedia. Encyclopedias are often updated, but editions for previous years will still be useful.

Cost- $17.95

Rationale for Selection- This would be a nice addition to the library collection because children love looking at the different topics that only a Ripley’s Believe it or Not book would cover. This would be a great attention getter for students to browse the reference section!

I can't read this. I want to but it's so heavy and awkward that it's hard to carry around, not comfortable even to sit and page through, etc. There are so many facts on each page it's tedious.
I don't have any suggestions but if this were done differently I think it's possible a huge difference could be made. The facts interest me, very much so, but it's just too much work and the fun is taken out of it. :(
I'm giving it two stars because it's not a bad book by any means, it's actually really cool. Maybe one day I'll find something similiar that's a little easier. Maybe a far slimmer book would work for me.

In my opinion this book is a awesome book.I really like this book because it had many things like the guy that looks like a baby.It had so many things that I thought was gross. If you like books with pictures or with disgusting things then this is the right book for you.If you don't like that type of book then this book isn't for you. You should really read this book if you want to see some interesting stuff. So if you think you can't handle any weirdness or disgusting stuff then don't even bother to look at the book.

I read all of these I could get my hands on as a kid. I still love to read "trivia" and use it for story or art ideas, research spring-points, or just to be a walking library for friends and family. Great series. Kids and adults love them, and a good way to help people consider the differences in and similarities of people, cultures and creatures all over the world.

Sometimes interesting, sometimes gross, sometimes poorly researched (Ripley's has begun many urban legends that refuse to die).[return]It's still a good read; just verify your own research before quoting it!

This book is weird, fun and indeed occassionally unbelievable. I got it for the kids but we have spent many an hour lounging around gaping at the pictures and stories. Great for entertaining awkward visitors, too.
