This interesting book has stories, tales, and true facts about areas all over the state of Oregon. Each time I visit an area of Oregon, I like to read the sections of this book that tell about it. Before we went camping in eastern Oregon last week, I read about towns, stories, and people from that area. I found out that the town of Mitchell (one of the towns we would be going through) has had many natural disasters over the years including a number of floods. This book says that after a sudden heavy rainstorm one summer, a 30 foot high wall of water swept into town and completely destroyed it. The townspeople could hear it coming and most of them were able to get to higher ground in time. When we drove through town after reading this, we were able to see where the water would have come from and imagine the event.
Roadside History of Oregon helps to make the different place come alive to me, telling me about the people who used to live there, stories of how the areas were settled, and information about the land itself. It helps bring the past alive.

It's an exciting way of discovering Oregon, from the armchair. It describes the various landscapes of Oregon recounting historical facts of the development of Oregon.
I saw many discrepencies of many missing local lore missing throughout out the book. It seems as though the author's intention is to only focus on the major landmarks throughout the state leaving out much detail of the beauty in all of Oregon.

I've read this book cover to cover more than once. It's full of interesting and little-known stories about my home state. If you're going to take a road trip through Oregon, or if you're just homesick like me, this book is a great companion.
