The book is in the genre of "Startup Nation." Since "Startup Nation" there have been many books trying to explain Israel's success in different areas. This book does not focus on any specific areas, but does review the ground first covered in "Startup Nation." The book claims that Israel's success is a confluence of a number of factors including what was originally raised in "Startup Nation," mandatory subscription in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).

I agree that Israel's success with innovation is not solely due to one factor; however, I had a hard time following assertions made by the author. Her observations are very interesting, and she backs up her thesis with independent corroboration by leading industry experts on the theory, but she doesn't to my satisfaction prove the factors she raises in fact contribute to Israeli innovation.

That said, I found her thesis that most educational experiences youth are involved with do not challenge them to innovate. Thinking back to my personal experiences and watching my children grow up, I believe they were directed more to memorize and regurgitate or at best understand underlying theories. There seems to be a consistent Israeli approach according to Inbal Arieli to challenge Israeli youth to solve problems and overcome adversity. Even my university experience was about solving problems but not creating new intellectual capital.

Lastly, I would say this book definitely has its place. I would recommend this book to people over "Startup Nation" when people want a non-business book introduction to Israeli innovation. I found the way Inbal Arieli presents the concept of Israeli innovation to be easier to digest for many people, especially those who are not interested in reading a more formal business case type book.

The first thing that caught my attention about this book was the word "Chutzpah," which I saw on the University of Tel Aviv website. This word intrigued me, making me wonder what is so special about this term.

As usual, I looked up the meaning of the word and discovered a book written about Chutzpah. Very special indeed.
This book consists of 5 parts, 17 chapters, and 297 pages. It was written by a successful Israeli entrepreneur.

The main theme of the book is the uniqueness of Israel as a successful hub of innovation and entrepreneurship.

The author reveals what makes Israel unique compared to other countries in the field of entrepreneurship, making the nation known as "the start-up nation."

The author writes from her own experiences and includes a few real case studies that occurred in Israel.

The famous Chinese entrepreneur, Jack Ma, who visited Israel in 2018, admitted that he learned two important lessons from Israel: innovation and Chutzpah.

Chutzpah means the courage to challenge oneself to do the impossible. According to the author, every Israeli possesses this characteristic, making them unique compared to others.

According to the author, Israelis have been trained to survive in uncertainty due to their history of immigration, wars, and threats from neighboring Arab countries.

This situation has trained them from a young age to be self-reliant and strive to improve themselves without expecting help from others.

The author explains the development phases of Israeli children, starting from pre-school, which differ from those in other developed countries.

She describes the learning methods in the classroom and the compulsory military service they undergo before entering the workforce.

Interestingly, due to the threat of wars, most Israelis learn survival skills that they later apply in their careers, often gained from their experiences in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

Many Israelis who succeed in the technological industry acquire basic education during their service with the IDF.

The entrepreneurial characteristics instilled in Israelis are quite unique because they differ from the typical entrepreneurial traits we often hear about.

In Israel, the uniqueness lies in the resilience honed from a young age and the ability to survive in challenging conditions. The author reveals several Hebrew terms that she considers unique compared to other societies.

I highly recommend this book to the Minister of Education, the Minister of Higher Education, and the Minister of Defence (because of the PLKN program) so that the values described can be instilled in our society.

The beginning of the book is amazing and sets the stage well. It was very insightful to see how kids are raised to nurture Chutzpah! As the book progressed I felt author digressed too much to Military side and made the book more monotone. Its a good quick read for gleaning some great intricacies-of Israeli society and startup ecosystem- for the later part lacked on data and more references would have been good.

Wonderful book!

I was searching for the word “Chutzpah” and I bumped over this book. I read it in one shot. Almost spent a night reading. One of the best books I read in 2019. The author gives a wonderful picture of raising kids in innovative life style. I could relate a lot to it as my mom ( who is a hero to me) , raised us with similar values the author shares in the book. I shared the importance of this book to many of my friends. And they are buying and reading it. Look forward to hear some lectures of the author in YouTube. Thanks once again for writing this book.

Israel is somewhat an enigma. A mismatch of ingredients that have created an unique and against all the odds, a hugely succesful multifaceted gumbo. This book tries to point out some keys that have helped Israel become the ”startup nation”.

Abundant hardships have shaped Israel and gave jewish people almost unparalled resilience. There’s also the the tight knit community, bold and independent mindstate, creativity and… and… of course - Chutzpah.

Hate it or love it. Chuzpah is maybe the most Israeli word I know, and it might not hurt you to know its meaning.

Yeah, it’s an alright business book.

I read the Hebrew version of this book, so please keep that mind. This book is easy and a quick read. The author makes her point of view that the reasons why Israelis are so creative and successful at building startups are because of their upbringing, IDF service, and the fact that Israel is a melting pot. However, the author does not convey any original points of view that you can not read elsewhere. Everything in the book is a recycle of other researches and other info. This is not the kind of book that you'll return to.

Must-read for entrepreneurs, governments, and parents

Are you an entrepreneur who wants to unleash the full potential of your idea and business? Are you a government who wants to tease out the creative and innovative potential in your people? Are you a parent who wants your kids to be the most inventive and ingenuous versions of themselves? If you’re any of these, this book will open your eyes and mind.

Amazing read! Inbal does a great job at explaining the elements of Israeli culture that have allowed entrepreneurship and innovation to flourish in the country. In doing this, she has also provided deep insight into what entrepreneurship is all about.

I highly recommend this to anyone interested in entrepreneurship and all it entails.

The first half of the book was engaging and easy to read, offering fascinating insights into Israeli culture and upbringing. However, the second half felt lengthy and less captivating.

I see that other readers had the same feeling.

Opening charts are great. I don't remember so many examples of wit and creativity in the real life. But somewhere in the middle it becomes repetitive and feels like many stories were added to create a book from an article

Arieli spends 200 pages suggesting many things and proving nothing. Not an empirical work. Ignores international and internal politics in favor of cultural acclaim.

Класна книжка.
Я її читала не для того, щоб дізнатися про підприємливість ізраїльтян, а радше, щоб довідатися, як в Ізраїлі виховують дітей, як у них плекають хуцпу змалечку.

Before reading this book, I knew little to nothing about Israel. I really enjoyed getting an inside look into Israeli culture, especially Israeli childhood and teenage years. It was fascinating to learn how these early years play a huge part in this tech and entrepreneurship hub.

Not a tech savvy individual myself, I glazed over a bit when the author would provide lists of impressive apps and tech startup successes of her subjects, but was interested to learn what some of them were. The second half of the book was more about tech within the Israeli military which was not quite as interesting to me, but still had great lessons tucked within. A good read.

Fascinating overview of the reasons for Israeli ingenuity. The author, herself a Sabra, attributes much of the economic miracle to Israeli culture, which emphasizes teamwork, independence, interaction, and quick thinking. Starting with preschool education, when children are left to explore and improvise, this communal spirit extends into the army, the melting pot for the young and a ticket to prestigious positions. Intense bonding takes its toll, as expressed by the number of Israeli backpackers to foreign countries after their military service. Yet even in the wilds of the Amazon rain forest or the mountains in Nepal will Israelis find and seek each other out.

However, the culture the author knowingly describes is secular, which made me wonder how much the religious world, particularly the Charedim (ultra-Orthodox) would relate to certain aspects of Israeli life, in particular the total freedom of movement. Their own insular world may be at odds with the freewheeling Western mentality, and many stricter neighborhoods would shun contact altogether. Ironically, whatever influences the author may consider environmental may actually be atavistic, given the Jewish propensity for intellectual inquiry and, simply, a society where Judaism, even if not actually practiced by the majority, is pervasive. For example, she writes that Israeli children freely roam streets, junkyards, parks, etc., for school projects. This could never be done in America, where fear of predators is rampant. Only in a homogeneous population, particularly one where people stick out for each other, can a child be that protected, as well as focused.

Basically, this book is a testament to Jewish, rather than Israeli, innovation and entrepreneurship. Or rather, Jewish brains. Nevertheless, the book may offer to the rest of the world some interesting tips for raising resilient and resourceful children.

I applaud any positive writing about Israel as the news is only full of negative reports. It is part of the Israeli culture for the young people to be raised to be open minded and explore opportunities. Very well done book, I recommend it to anyone interested in entrepreneurship.
