Rate this book
Easy flowing, uncomplicated language tells the story of a humpback whale - from the day she is born, already weighing a ton, to a time when she struggles to avoid the ever-present whale-hunting ships. Young readers will discover many fascinating facts about the humpback whale in this easy-to-read text. They'll find out where whales live; how whales find their food; how they breathe the air they need as mammals; and how they sing underwater. The author closes with a note describing efforts being made to keep the whale from becoming extinct. There is also a glossary of whale words. The text is beautifully illustrated with John Hamberger's full-color art. An afterward on ecological preservation and a glossary are included.

A good narrative coupled with beautiful illustrations makes for a wonderful children's book! Whales were always a favorite of mine to learn about as a child and this is a good combination of story and learning.

Ages: 4 - 8

With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

So Follow or Friend me here on GoodReads! You’ll see my updates as I’m reading and know which books I’m liking and what I’m not finishing and why. You’ll also be able to utilize my library for looking up titles to see whether the book you’re thinking about reading next has any objectionable content or not. From swear words, to romance, to bad attitudes (in children’s books), I cover it all!

A beautiful and educational picture book about Humpback Whales and the Sea. Full of information on the ocean and lovely pictures, this is an amazing children’s book is for all whale lovers and a particularly great way to introduce children to Humpbacks, ‘the acrobats of the sea’.
If you loved this book, I recommend the Whalesong Trilogy by Robert Siegel, all written from the perspective of Humpback Whales.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was taken aback, thought, at what seemed a unnecessarily cruel description of how the whale hunters work, that while it might prick the conscience of the parent reading the book, seems inappropriate for the little person listening. The "deadly weapon exploding and killing a big humpback whale" and following description of how the whale is broken down, was jarring when i came upon it.
