Maddie, Gran, and Angel travel to the UK to visit Ava and her husband, William. William and Ava are living in his ancestral castle he inherited from his uncle while make some repairs. However there seems to be something strange going on. Things seem to be going missing and you can hear noises coming from seemly empty rooms. Ava is concerned about what might be going on and she also is feeling overwhelm liking in a new country in a small town where people don’t seem very friendly toward her. Maddie experience some of these thing for herself can’t help but get involved when the body of a young woman is found on the grounds.

I love how Maddie and her mother are mending their relationship. Everything is great over night they still have issues and still have some resentments and doubts. It was fun see Gran and Maddie outside of Mapple Falls this allow us to see another side of their relationships and to meet new family members, This mystery is full of red herrings and no shortage of suspects. I recommend this book to cozy mystery fans.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been by anyone.

Maddie is excited and nervous to visit her mother and new stepfather in England. On one hand, she's eager to connect with her mother and explore the English castle her stepfather recently inherited. On the other hand, she's worried about her mother's cryptic e-mail implying she needed Maddie's help getting to the bottom of the strange things that were happening in the castle. As usual Ava is on edge and snippy with everyone. Maddie scarcely has a chance to talk to her mother before Maddie and Angel hear mysterious noises inside the castle at night. They chalk it up to the age of the castle and try to put it out of their minds but it sure was scary. The next morning they stumble across a dead body in the garden. The detective in charge is brusque and seems to suspect Maddie of all people. He doesn't play by Ethan's rules and Maddie can't wait for her boyfriend to come over and help out. The search for answers leads to more questions and spooky secret passageways. On the plus side, there's traditional English baking, just like Gran's and FUDGE!

AHHHH!! This story sounded great. An spooky English castle and fudge- what's not to love, especially around Halloween time? Well, the author has not read her own books and this story is chock full of MAJOR inconsistencies that make the motive from the previous book a moot point. There are also numerous grammatical errors, typically seen in the possessive plural like Blackwell's instead of Blackwells'. She also confuses some compound words and two word phrases. At least the Britishisms work this time. Doesn't Cheryl have an editor or a friend who can look things over? This is BAD! In this book Grandad was a government agent, Maddie isn't sure what branch but he was a spy and away from home a lot. What the what? In the previous book he was ex-Army, in the one before that ex-Marine and that's how he came by his survivalist skills. Also a major continuity error is William Blackwell who apparently is now a Duke! Um that wasn't mentioned before. He'd be Lord Blackwell, Duke of ____ . His family seat is in Devonshire and here Gran says it's not far from where she grew up and Grandad married her and took her away to his hometown in America. In the first book (and I went back and checked) she was born and raised in Liverpool and lived there until she was 14 when her parents decided to immigrate to the U.S. Liverpool is nowhere near Devonshire. They're on opposite sides of the country and Gran would know that. I had to double check on a map but I basically knew that without checking. If I know that, Gran should know that too. In the previous book it was mentioned Gran has a brother back in England. He was NOT invited to the 70th birthday bash because it was just too far to ask him to travel for a short amount of time. (Because 70 is sooo old you know). OK I thought maybe he was older and chose to stay when the family emigrated or went back, but apparently he has a big chip on his shoulder because Gran, who did everything with her younger brother, went away and left him. He hated Granddad and his refusal to come to Gran's party caused a rift in the family. AHH!! Pick one storyline and stick with it. Pick choice B because it plays a major role in the plot of this novel. Go back and revise the previous books to match. The murder victim's hair keeps changing color. First it's dark, which can be attributed to the fact she's found under the bushes early in the morning. Then it's mousy and finally reddish-brown. Again, pick one.

The murder mystery isn't quite that obvious but there is a lot going on and it's unclear at first if it's all connected. I was surprised but not surprised by all that was revealed. One subplot comes out of left field mostly because of the inconsistencies between books. I couldn't put it down. I really did like the castle and if this were set in the 18th or 19th-centuries, it would be obvious what was happening. I wondered if smuggling still happens and whether attitudes have changed since Ross Poldark's day. I most especially loved the FUDGE making and the traditional English baking. Did I mention FUDGE?

Maddie has matured and come a long way back at home but away from Ethan she reverts back to her more childish nature. She feels hurt by her mother's coldness and anger at Harry's suspicion. At least she tries to rationalize things and doesn't go full throttle into her own investigation. Maddie does maintain her usual kindness though and I had a bad feeling it was going to get her into trouble. Gran is lovely and gentle and kind as usual. She has a tough time being the mother of the lady of the manor and doing nothing. Angel is a true friend. She sticks with Maddie even though she's scared and nervous. Angel is a woman after my own heart when it comes to sweets. I want some bread and butter pudding and golden syrup pudding but most especially FUDGE!!!!! Chocolate dipped fudge! Sign me up for a box or several! She says she can't cook but that's not true. In the previous book she made some great eclairs and she's been learning from Maddie. In this book all that seems to have been forgotten.

Ava still has a chip on her shoulder but I don't blame her. Being lady of the manor wouldn't suit me either if I were her. I also wouldn't enjoy dinner parties with the local gentry because the villagers can be NASTY! Nothing seems to have changed in 200 years. Only Jane Austen was skilled enough to observe and gently poke fun at what she saw. Ava doesn't seem to have a sense of humor. She is more relaxed in the company of her husband and I believe she truly loves him and worries about him. He's having financial difficulties thanks to his late uncle's money management problems and now there's something sinister going on. Plus there's the dead body and the whole business with his niece. She's not doing well in jail. (GET THE WOMAN MENTAL HEALTH CARE!) Poor William! He's under so much stress but he remains calm and kind. He's a gracious host even when his guests don't deserve it.

The most important person in William's life aside from his family is his former governess or nanny- governess/nanny- they're not the same thing! Sybil Clarence comes across as a sweetheart like William. That explains a lot, if she's sincere. She now spends her days making fudge at a shop in the village and her free time with her miniature Boxer, Winston. Adorable Winston needs more page time and a larger role in the story. Sybil just seems too nice for me to trust, especially given the title of the book. If she is genuinely, she's lovely but rather clueless. It's hard to believe a former governess wouldn't be a good businesswoman.

There are two butlers in residence, which is unusual but given the fact the Duke and Duchess have guests, they need extra help. Beecham, the original butler for William's late uncle, is now retired. He has come up to help serve. He's a proper English butler of the old school variety. Even his name comes out of some period drama. Beecham is a talented woodcarver as well. Carlson, the new butler, seems efficient enough but he's young and untried. He doesn't owe the family any loyalty yet but perhaps he'll stick around long enough to be a part of the landscape. Mrs. Dobbin, the cook, is a proper English cook. She resembles Mrs. Potts from Beauty and the Beast-round, wrinkled and smiling. However, I suspect the staff to be behind the mysterious happenings because they're worried about the change of ownership and losing their jobs. If they make weird things happen, maybe William and Ava will stay longer and not hand the castle over to Nicholas who may make changes. Perhaps they're unhappy at the renovations instead and want Nicholas to come move in and keep things as they always have been.

Sybil's nephew Harry is a police officer and the detective on the case. He's gruff and suspicious towards strangers and I don't blame him. Maddie DOES seem to be a murder magnet. He's never had a murder case before and doesn't even know where to begin. Harry resents Maddie's intrusion and tries to shut her out. He's a lot like Rob Jones was at first when he started working for Ethan. Harry isn't all bark though. He loves his aunt dearly and cares about her safety. He's worried about her. When he's NOT on duty, he unbends enough to be nice enough.

Avis, Sybil's assistant, is the murder victim. New in town and down on her luck, she should have been grateful to Sybil for a job. It seems like she was and the job gave her confidence but she also appears to have been a thief. She's found with some important artifacts from the castle. The evidence seems pretty damming at this point. Still, she didn't deserve to be killed. Letty, her roommate and the castle kitchen maid, is distraught at her friend's death. She's young and scared. Her emotions cause her to take off work a lot instead of trying to keep busy.

In the village, Joan, a shopkeeper, is the local gossip. She's worse than Mavis because Mavis at least means well and just wants to share happy news. Joan likes to gossip maliciously and is suspicious of newcomers. Angel fears Joan is going to start a witch hunt against them! I believe it. Mr. and Mrs. Dorchester are neighbors and important people in the village. Evelyn seems to be some kind of big wig and has her finger in every pie. If she doesn't like you, you better watch your back. Does she know more about the murder than she lets on? What about the mysterious happenings at the castle? Mr. and Mrs. Driver are much nicer. Matilda is a lot of fun and her husband, Ashton, dances to her tune. Matilda is smart and perceptive. She realizes more than she lets on. They're a great couple and certainly not involved in any of the nasty business, I hope. Jake, the groom, seems like a nice guy. He's very brave to put his life on the line for the family.

I missed everyone back home and the Maple Lane Bakery. I didn't miss Big Red though.

This series has such potential but the author keeps letting me down with the inconsistencies! I wish she'd go back and edit them properly and make them flow.

I received a free copy of the novel  Fudge and Frenemies: A  Maple Lane Cozy Mystery book 6 by C.A. Phipps and this review was given freely.
Intrigue, suspense and a few twists fill the pages of this murder mystery where Maddie and Angel find themselves targets.
As spring returns to Maple Falls, Maddie finds herself traveling  with Gran and Angel to visit her parents  in Blackwell Castle near London to solve the mystery of strange noises and mysterious night time visitors as well as to meet Grans brother Seth only to find herself solving a murder with the local policeman Harry.

Maddie, Gran and Angel head to visit her mom at a castle in the UK... what could possibly go wrong? With Maddie, it seems plenty. She once again stumbles upon a dead body and then is caught up in all the chaos the ensues. As with the other books in the Maple Lane Mysteries, Maddie uses sleuthing skills she learned from her grandfather to help solve the crime... but not without a lot of bumps along the way. An entertaining cozy mystery. Looking forward to seeing what comes next for Maddie - and will Ethan get to play more of a role?

Fudge and Frenemies is set in England! Maddie, Gran and Angel visits Maddie's mom and stepdad at their castle! I love these characters. They feel like extended family. Poor Maddie cannot get a break. She discovers a body on the castle grounds. She will have to be careful with her investigations as this is England - not Maple Lane, USA. The plot kept me reading until five am because I could not put the book down. It is a fascinating mystery with lots of twists. You do not want to miss this book.

🏰 I miss the folks back home!

3.5 🌟stars
I have liked this series from the start as it focused on close relationships and crime solving in a small town called Maple Falls on the U.S. West Coast.

This trip across The Pond for Maddie, her BFF Angel and her British-born grandma Beatrice had Maddie meddling (always successfully, it has to be said) in a local police investigation like other books in the series but, for me, the absence of the other folks back in their town in Oregon (and Maddie's Maine coon cat Big Red) detracted from my enjoyment of the story. I love Maddie's gal pal and bakery crew and her tight connection to her hometown.

For this story set in England that whole vibe was missing. This plot was somewhat scattered and the descriptions of all of the castle's grounds and hidden nooks and crannies were hard to visualize. It had so many threads going, what with mysterious noises, a death, thefts, vandalism, attacks, tense visits from a distant relative and talk of Maddie's dead grandfather's secretive past. A lot crammed in and Angel's prodigious appetite lends a spark of humor to the tale. It does all come together in the end but it just was not as fun without Maple Falls.😕

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Maple Lane

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story! It involved a LOT of people including new friends and even newer family. The crime was very intriguing because a good many of clues didn’t make much sense until later in the story. Great story!
