The New Mutants are: Cannonball, Sunspot, Magma, Magik, Dani Moonstar and Karma aka the X-Men’s B-team aka who?! When one of their team goes missing, they set out to find her in a remote town – and guess who’s awaiting? Legion! It’s six versus however many dozens of personalities are inside David Haller’s whacked-out mind!

After some truly dismal recent X-Men books, I thought I’d go back a few years and try out Zeb Wells’ acclaimed 2009 run on New Mutants despite recognising only a couple of characters, Magik and Legion. And it speaks to Wells’ ability that he did a decent job with a cast of near-unknowns!

This is the first time I’ve seen Legion live up to his name as the personalities in his head surface, one by one, to take over his body – and it’s pretty cool to see! The revolving door of personalities also gives him alternating superpowers which makes him a pretty dangerous cat – I get why he’s an omega-level mutant now (though I’m not sure how those personalities wound up in his noggin in the first place). He has an ambiguous alignment – essentially good but bad people control his actions - rather than being just straight up evil and wanting to take over the world which makes him an interesting villain.

I liked the unusual storyline of Magik launching a rescue attempt inside Legion’s chaotic mind even if the real world half was the regular superheroes punching the bad guy thing. Also, besides Legion and Magik, none of the characters really stood out. Diogenes Neves’ art isn’t anything special and he has some very bland character faces that tend to look alike. The final issue is a bit dull in mostly recapping the adventure that’s just happened and the fill-in artist was dreadful.

Considering I’ve never read any New Mutants books or know most of the characters, I was pleasantly surprised to find Return of Legion to be a flawed but ok read – worth a look if you’re an X-Men fan but don’t expect brilliance.

It's like this: I was a kid in the '80s. As such, I have a deep, loving connection with Marvel characters who were also kids in the '80s. As such, the New Mutants (see also: Power Pack and Kitty Pryde) will always have a special place in my comicbook loving heart.

When the '90s hit, Rob 'can't-draw-to-save-his-life' Liefeld came along and disembowelled the New Mutants book, turning it into the 'oh-so-grim-and-gritty' X-Force. He completely ruined one of my favourite books. I hated him for it then and I still don't feel much better about it now.

As such, any old school New Mutants action I can get, I am incredibly grateful for. This book fits the bill nicely. Thank you Zeb Wells, for bringing my old pals back together for the modern age and staying true to the spirit of the original books. Any chance you could do it again?

Damn! I am on an X-Men streak!
This is about the fourth book I've read this month with some sort of mutant team on the cover. Go me!
Unfortunately, I'm still not familiar with all the nuances of everything X-related.
Are there any readers out there who can claim to be an X-pert?
Like what I did there? X-men...X-pert. Huh?!
Ooooooh yeeeeeah.
Well, there's more where that came from, baby!

description

So these guys are the New Mutants.
Except they're not. Not new, anyway.
They used to be the requisite Kid-Mutant team, but now they've been replaced by younger, fresher, cooler kids.
Don't be sad, Sunspot. It happens to the best of us...
Now they're all in their early 20's, and not really sure what to do with themselves.
Then Illyana (fresh from Hell) pops up out of nowhere (literally), and informs them that some of their friends are going to DIE! if they don't go on a rescue mission.
Cyclops (because he's a responsible adult) gives them a jet and tells them to have fun.

Ok. I'm going to be honest, I had no idea most of these characters even existed, much less had their own title back in the day. And maybe a few of them looked slightly familiar, but I always assumed they were c-list characters.
Who knew?
This book had a pretty good reference thing in the back, so I was able to kind of get the gist of who they were in their previous incarnation.
There was also an interview with the author of this title (skim, skim, skim), and another interview with the previous author...Claremont?
I think it was Claremont, but...skim, skim, skim, you know?

I liked Return of Legion.
I liked the characters, I liked the art, and I liked the plot.
Very...likable.
And that says a lot because I went into this thing with no idea about any of them. Good stuff!

This was a fun read!

Sam gets the team together but its their first mission and well they have to rescue their friends Karma and Mirage and well Illyana is there too and they do split up going to that place and one team finds Karma's body and the other find her soul is trapped inside legion and what not and we get the clue of whats been going on and the arduous explanation and then the team facing off against Legion of personalities and its such a wild read and you find yourself going crazy until the New mutants do come together to save theiir friend and interesting tidbits towards the end with Sam and Dani and I love that!

Its a very fast paced comic and there is a bit more heavy towards Legion's side but its mostly to explain his side of the story which is great and also some interesting characterwork done here like Sam questioning his leadership thing, Dani and Illyana's psychological thinking and some secrets underneath for all of them. Just great stuff all around. ALSO THAT ENDING! <3

Dani and Karma are in trouble according to Magik who arrived slightly discombobulated.
description
According to Magik they will both die soon.

I'm familiar with the New Mutants even though this is my first time reading a New Mutants title. That's the nice part of the X-titles the characters have lots of room to run around and play. The Battlefield for this volume is Legion. Inside his mind and outside facing him.

His mind is not a fun place to be.

I liked the Return of Legion. David Haller is dangerously fun and I also like Magik and Cannonball. I never formed too strong of a feeling for any of the other New Mutants, though I remember Magma being pretty awesome on a PlayStation video game years ago.

The Return of Legion is an interesting, unexpected, and frightful tale.

A fun read with some good action and comedy moments. Legion is unique villain that's both creepy and actual serious threat. I wanted to see more of him and his warped personalities. I liked the artist style until last chapter. It's worth your time. Tt's about 3.5.

The artwork was so beautiful I cried tears of happiness.
And it was nice seeing a more recent piece on the original New Mutants because as of yet, I haven't visited the older than '2000s comics of the X-Men.

Soon.

❎ Review! ❎
.
In 2009, Zeb Wells - fresh off his run on Amazing Spider-Man - revitalised a stagnant X-Men property and brought it into the 21st century. The series reunited the entire original New Mutants team, now adults, and - in this volume, at least - one of their more famous villains, Professor Xavier’s son, Legion. This trade collects the first 5 issues. So, was it everything it’s cracked up to be? As a big New Mutants fan, why did I wait this long to read it? These answers and more, below!
.
Honestly, this was okay. Solid, I’d say. Wells captures some of the character voices perfectly - Dani Moonstar, the heart of the team, is a home run - but in other moments I think he’s still finding their personalities and experimenting with interpersonal dynamics, which is really key in team books (and honestly, all comic books). By the end of the volume, there’s an argument to be made that he’s found that footing, and I look forward to seeing the progression in the rest of the series.
.
Plot-wise, while Legion’s multiple personalities make him an inherently interesting villain, his mental health is only touched on briefly. Most of the actual resolution comes from superheroes beating up the bad guys - which is fine, don’t get me wrong - but with characters like Xian (who can literally possess people) and Magik (who fucking rules, slide for her in action) another layer could be explored.
.
Still, a satisfying start to Wells’ run on the title. What made Claremont’s New Mutants so good in the early 80s were their bonds - children going through adolescence and everything comes with it, with mutant powers on top. I’m waiting for more of that to surface, hopefully in the next volume.

New Mutants: Return of Legion (reviewed as part of the New Mutants by Zeb Wells Complete Collection)
By Zeb Wells(Writer), Diogenes Neves (Penciller), Zachary Baldus (Penciller)
Published by Marvel, 2009

Synopsis: The New Mutants go to Colorado to search for Dani Moonstar and Karma after they went missing investigation a missing persons case.

Review:
Alright, this is not a book that you can jump in with no knowledge of the New Mutants. It really relies on you knowing the main themes of our main cast. However you can still enjoy the main gist of the book. The New Mutants are likeable and definable by their main character traits. Magik is mysterious and mischievous while willing to take steps that others wont. Magma is kind to all. Cannonball is a leader who struggles to lead by example. Sunspot is a ladies-man but will do what ever it takes to protect his friends. Mirage is someone that like Magik is willing to take the next step for different reasons. Karma wants to protect everyone no matter what. The story has some dark moments especially with possessions and the different versions of our antagonist. Our antagonist is someone that can't really control his actions and when his slim control fades, people die. Our team is way out of their league and they know, we see them struggle with this task and try to solve the predicament they're in. Zeb Wells writes a cool story with a nice premise build on the return of most of the old team, Neves's art works really well and some of the variations of our antagonist look and feel twisted. Baldus's art for the debrief issue is kind of big downgrade in the direction, the faces feel stilted and the characters don't really pop out of your imagination.

Star Rating = 3,75 stars out of 5
A fine read for anyone interested in New Mutants if you know the characters, good art for the most part and an interesting team to continue reading.

While I love the character's from the New Mutant's team, I mainly picked up this book due to it's future involvement in some crossover events. Despite this, I was pleasantly surprised to find a great story!

This book has all my favourite New Mutants, with the exception of Rahne sadly, and it has a great story! This is actually my first time reading a book with Legion, and I didn't really know what his powers were before hand. In spite of this, the book just clicked with me at some point and I "got" everything, despite feeling very convoluted at the beginning (probably due to my lack of knowledge).

Danielle is excellent here! Her lack of mutant powers actually make her more interesting. The idea of a non-mutant on a mutant team sounds like it shouldn't really work, but it really does. Here and in X-Factor with Rictor.

Illyana is back, and her character is better than ever. Same with Amara, Sam and Roberto.

Great book if you already like the NM, and probably a serviceable one if you're getting introduced to them here.

A solid start to the run, Wells assembles the New Mutants and isn’t afraid to get weird whilst doing it. Looking forward to learning more about the group as the run continues.

I would probably give this 3.5 or 3.75 five stars if I could. This is my first run-in with the New Mutants so I knew nothing about who was on the team or what had happened previously. I would say this wasn't the easiest place to jump in as the book contains previous storylines that are not well-explained. A good example of this is Magik who everyone is mad about and I had a hard time discerning why. This wasn't a huge deal as the plot focuses on the strange happenings in a town and eventually Legion. He is a great character and while this was not my favorite depiction of him, I think he certainly was a solid villain. My biggest issue is that the book plays on the horror of having all of these personalities in control in his head but the large collection of men kind of gave off weird rape vibes which I think were unintentional and probably should have been tweaked a bit. I was not offended by it at all, it was a head-scratcher and seemed like a little bit better of editing might have helped.

With that said, I liked the art a lot and appreciated how detailed the panels were. What is even more impressive is that the artist never changed in these issues. Can you imagine that happening currently? I miss having a consistent artist on every issue of a book, it really does add something special. Regardless, this is a promising series and one of the better X-Men books I've read in the 2000's and up era so I'm definitely looking forward to reading more.

I only have a passing familiarity with most of these characters, and the first issue assumes not only that we know them, but that we have a lot of affection for them. Fortunately, the rest of this arc highlights David Haller, an excellent antagonist (and probably a terrible representation of mental health; funny how often those go together).

The art is really inconsistent - the third issue has the best art, but not all of Neves’ issues are as strong. Unfortunately a different artist handles the fifth issue, and it looks really bad.

I don’t mind the team dynamic, but my enjoyment of the series will really depend on how good the individual arcs are, rather than tying into any pre-existing love for these characters.

Continuing the great x-read of 2017/18...

I love the New Mutants and it is really great to see them back. Legion's story is really well-written, fun, and suspenseful. But it just kind of suddenly ends when it felt like it was just getting going. From there the rest of the volume just isn't as good. Certainly not bad and I am definitely looking forward to more of this series, but it felt a bit discombobulated.

Being a huge fan of the original Nee Mutants, it was great to come back and see most of the original team together.

The story is fairly contained that it should be fine for most people with some familiarity with the X-Men but it’s probably meant for fans of the New Mutants like myself.

This was a lot of fun. It really stayed in the spirit of the original New Mutants comics while still having a very good plot, great art, and a lot of horror elements and really good suspense. The characters were also very good and still just as relatable as adults as they were as clueless teenagers

Decent Legion story using our favourite adolescents of the atom. Not enough Warlock but some great stuff from Magick, Cannonball and Karma particularly.
