Love in Exile

Brothers in Arms, Book Six

Gregory Anderson has reluctantly returned to England in 1817 after more than seven years sailing the world. Half Polynesian, Gregory is caught between two worlds. He isn’t looking for love. He’s only looking for a warm body with a modicum of wit and reasonable intelligence to help him get through the few short months he’ll be in England.

Nat and Alecia Digby’s marriage, arranged when they were young and foolish, was almost ruined before it began when they both took lovers. They don’t want to give up the erotic games they learned to play and enjoy, but they won’t risk their marriage again by falling in love with someone else.

When the three meet, they think it will be nothing more than a night or two of shared pleasure and erotic thrills. But the unthinkable happens, because love refuses to be forced into exile.

LEAST FAVORITE OF THIS SERIES!!! And let me tell you that the MAIN reason I didn't like this book was because it had no business being part of the series. Brothers in Arms is a war series. It's about men who struggled thru the war and came together for solace and love and when they came home, for society's sake, they found a wife to share in their menage love ... etc etc etc. Well, Neither Gregory nor Nat were in the war that I could tell and the only connection was they liked kinky sex so they knew past characters in other books....not good, this should have been a stand alone novel. And speaking of novels, the book is like only 150ish pages long, yet sold as a novel not a novella. not good....
ok, the story ... i dont know what to tell you, but it had so many wholes, it was like reading swiss cheese. it did nothing for me.

This is my least favorite in the series, and I think that's because it just didn't seem to fit in with the overall theme. The series is supposed to be about men who struggled through the horrors of war together and are now trying to find a way to cope happily in the civilian world. Gregory just didn't fit into that theme, and his young lovers, the happily married Nat and Alecia, definitely didn't fit into it, either. I was sort of thrown for a loop being introduced to a character I'd never even heard of before (Gregory) and then expected to care about him. I might mention, also, that we never hear of him or his lovers again in the series.

Even having said that, it is part of the series, so if you're working your way through, you may not want to pass it up. It's not an overly long tale, and the erotic aspects are still good.

This isn't Pulitzer Prize winning stuff. This is erotic fiction. So if you're in the mood for something worthy of a Pulitzer, look elsewhere. If you are, however, in the mood to read a dirty story about a hot threesome with likable characters and an engaging plot, you can't really go wrong with this one. So much erotica is focused solely on the sex, and I won't lie and say this book doesn't contain a lot of sex, but what sets Kane's work apart from some others I've read is her ability to actually give her characters personality, and to actually weave a story in between the steamy stuff. I liked this first book quite a bit, but there are a few in the series I will probably be rating higher simply because I liked the storyline and/or the characters a little more.

Contains m/m and m/m/f sex scenes with an insanely high steam factor, so if you're a pearl clutcher, don't bother.

SUMMARY: (SPOILER WARNING)

Gregory Anderson (aka Palu) is back in England after being gone for awhile on research as a naturalist. His mixed English and Polynesian heritage makes it difficult for him to fit into English society and he’s dreading his return.

But when he meets Nat and Alecia, a sexually adventurous married couple who want to spend the night with him, things are looking up.

But their one night turns into two and before long they all find themselves falling for each other, even as it causes a scandal among their families.

REVIEW:

This was a strange one for the series. It follows a completely different format, which was both interesting and an awkward fit for the series. Let me explain…

So all the books up until this point have been about two men who are either best friends and almost lovers or lovers already and have served in the war together. In each book they end up with a woman to share (in one way or another).

But in this book Palu doesn’t know Nat and Alecia beforehand, although they do share a group of friends. Considering that they share so many friends I don’t even understand how they haven’t met yet. But anyways, they don’t know each other. And Alecia and Nat are already married (for seven years) and in love.

This whole setup is different and kind of a nice change. But it also doesn’t match the entire theme of the series — brothers in arms, meaning they are about men who have served in the war together. So the book felt a little awkward because of that. But at the same time it was kind of interesting because it was different.

I enjoyed their encounters in the beginning. Alecia and Nat are no strangers to sharing a man in their bedroom. So the awkwardness of this being a new experience could be bypassed, which was a nice change. The threesome was new for Palu, although he has been with both men and women separately. So I enjoyed the steamy encounters at first.

But I did find the backstory of Alecia and Nat to be uncomfortable. In the beginning years of their marriage, they both cheated on each other relentlessly until a friend of theirs (Simon) introduced them to sharing a man. All the past cheating left a bad taste in my mouth for them. They seem in love now, but knowing the level of deceit in the past was disturbing. And the fact that they have shared friends still in the group (Daniel and Simon, on separate occasions) is also awkward to me. I never like when books have casual sharing within the core friend group. It’s just weird for me, especially when those other friends have (or will be getting) their own books and HEA’s.

And their connection with Palu just felt rather shallow. Sure, they all like fucking each other and that’s fun. But I can’t say I felt “love” between the three of them. There’s a lot of telling us how they feel, but I didn’t really see/feel it on page.

Overall it wasn’t my favorite in the series. It felt kind of displaced from the rest of the series and I didn’t feel much of a connection between the throuple. The sex was hot in places, but boring in others. Hoping the next one in the series will be better!

Nat and Alecia are always looking for a sexual thrill and a third in their bed at a party for Ian and Sophie they meet Gregory Anderson (Palu). Gregory has spent the last seven years sailing the world he is half Polynesian and he doesn't fit in either world. In the beginning they used him to blackmail her father and in return they were threatened with blackmail from someone who wants to be their third. I love reading this series, but I didn't feel as connected to the character's in this book as I was in the last one's. The book did have some hot sex scenes and I love a good m/m/f story. I didn't like Alecia's father he was bully who used money to control his daughter and her husband. This book was well written (read) as I listened to it on audio. I am looking forward to reading or listening to the next book in this series.

Mmmm, let's see. Samantha Kane. Love her work. This one just ....didn't hit if for me. It was good, don't get me wrong. I doubt Kane can tell a bad story, but I gave it a four star review because, well, it just lacked -- for me -- a believable story line. I felt it was rushed too much ...almost like, okay -- get to the sex. And the sex is hot. But Kane writes very believable story lines -- and that's something given she is writing m/f/m set in a time period I doubt many people took their clothes off during sex, let alone some of the tales she weaves so seamlessly. But this one just seemed...off. I did like the characters, I thought each was fully developed, but I had a hard time buying into this one for some reason. Still a keeper for me. I would recommend it simply because it's Kane.

Extra heated, cross-cultural MMF Regency menage

This installment stokes up the MMF explicit heat while also providing one of the sweeter relationship stories in the series. The intercultural aspect featured prominently in both, adding an exotic twist to the steam while trying to be respectful to the biracial character’s struggles (and cross-cultural love).

I liked the premise of the semi-arranged marriage couple exploring their own peccadillos and finding common interest in the large biracial man. However, as is typical of this series, the steam is clearly the focus of the story, and the relationship exploration, while sweet, mainly seems to stoke up the heat, yielding a partly sensitive but also partly sensationally fetishitic smut.

This sixth installment in the Brothers in Arms series is only loosely tied to the other books in the series, as one of the characters (Greogory/Palu) briefly mentions serving in the British Army in Spain (that features prominently in other stories in the series) and an important but understated role of Simon, introduced in other books.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the role of Nat, Lecia's husband, as a bi man with strong attractions to (and experience with men). He loves and enjoys his wife, but the couple weren't able to satisfy each other due to their inexperience with heterosexual love. The addition of another man (first of all Simon, and then later Palu) allowed both for greater experience, exploration, and satisfaction, and eventually a full threeway connection amongst the triad. This was especially gratifying for a character like Nat, who craved the power of a large/strong man while also dearly loving his wife. While this polyamorous need to be with multiple partners is not representative of all/most bisexuals (and sometimes is used as a negative stereotype), it is a nice break in this series to see a "middle man" who comes to crave both being a gentle "top" lover of women and men, as well as someone who can enthusiastically bottom to a more rough and tumble man like Palu.

3.5 stars - rounded up for the strength of Palu’s character and frame versus the needy couple’s love (from both partners)

When Gregory Anderson returns to England after many years traveling the world documenting and studying plants and animals, he does so with mixed feelings. Half-Polynesian on his Mother's side he takes after her with his dark good looks, build, and preference of freedom over polite society. At a social event he encounters married couple Nat and Alecia Digby. The Digbys married when they were just teens, almost lost one another due to foolishness, and now have an unconventional marriage. A spark of attraction between the Digbys and Mr. Anderson has them inviting him home with them. Both parties think this will be a one-off or short-lived encounter. However, they could not be more wrong! As they learn about one another they are only drawn in farther. But the Digbys promised they would not love anyone except each other and Mr. Anderson fears being rejected and hurt. Can they find common ground?

This was one of the most unique and scintillating erotic romances I have read. I loved the inclusion of the Polynesian culture, the rather less-staid aspects of Georgian England, and the realistic reactions and emotions associated with this type of alliance. One of the first menage-a-trois books I have encountered where it is two men and one woman-a welcome divergence from similar books.

Salacious is what comes to mind regarding this story. As usual its well written and the characters earthy and real as they masterfully prop up the historical premise, while brandishing their individual intriguing back stories. Nat and Alecia Digby and Gregory Anderson (aka Palu) make for a titillating and sultry menage.

It begins with good intention but as it starts it gets lost in a lot of pretext, excessive narrative, many exposed dialogues and abundant verbiage. It is too much, even without trying it tires and boredom.

Good story, but I thought the ending (before the epilogue) was a bit of a let down.

Samantha Kane has pretty much established her niche as the Queen of the Regency Menage with her Brothers in Arms series. Though one has to be willing to suspend their disbelief in all these polyamorous couples running around the ton with no one the wiser, Kane's attention to detail--the language (though in some of the novels she falls short in this department) and the mores--help to make such a scenario plausible. Bear in mind the Victorians believed the Regency was one of the most licentious eras of history (as they completely ignored the fact that there were more prostitutes during that time period, plus the infamous Cleveland Street Scandal), so maybe such pairings might not have been all that unusual *wink*.

I was curious as to how Ms. Kane would handle a biracial character becoming a part of a romantic triad in jolly and parochial olde England. Unfortunately, in trying too hard to mimic the small-minded views of upper-class Brits who saw Gregory Anderson as a "primitive savage", she ends up committing some serious race fail. The book is chock-full of questionable descriptions of the half-Polynesian Gregory as "exotic", "native", "wild" and those other coded phrases often used to depict non-whites in a perjorative manner. These descriptions were serious overkill and took away my enjoyment of the book, as did the lack of character development. Gregory (Palu) really had a lot of depth if only the author had decided to forego the "exoticness" angle (which Kane just kept beating me over the head with as if I'd somehow forget that Gregory was part English) and concentrate more on his scholarship, his family and how he came to be the man he is. I never really learned why he chose to come back to a place where in spite of who his father was, he'd never truly be accepted. Even the tattoo art on Gregory's body was treated as something like a sex toy rather than given the deeper meaning it deserves.

Nat and Alecia Digby also suffered from the novel's brevity. In its haste to get to the sex, there's never really any sense of who these two people are save for immature and money-hungry. Interestingly for the times, they would have been an unusual couple since they'd grown closer and more in love. It would have also been interesting to discover just why Alecia's father was such a control freak. Instead the novel turns into a painfully weepy over-melodrama featuring stock bad guys who hate Gregory's background or who want him bad enough to attempt to drive a wedge between the three tbrough oh-so-obvious blackmail that smarter characters would have laughed off. Yawn. Oh and that sentiment goes for the sex scenes, which lacked all the trangressive and kinky fire of At Love's Command

Love in Exile will remain in exile on my Nook and that's a pity. Samantha Kane had the opportunity to craft a sexy and compelling story to go along with the other books in this series and it just didn't measure up. I just hope Verity's story doesn't let me down--I've been looking forward to hers for so long!

This book is a little different from the previous books in this series. Gregory "Palu" Anderson hasn't been mentioned in any of the earlier books and I kind of wished that he had been. Palu is a child of an English explorer and a native woman from the Friendly Islands. He has suffered from the prejudice of being a half breed. The English can be more than a little unforgiving by those that are different. I guess that is true of everyone in one way of another. I was very happy to find that Palu knew all the other men that have had stories so far. It is important to have loyal friends. I liked Palu very much. He is a kind, loving and intelligent man that is lonely and more than a little hopeless. It was very pleasing to see him find a couple that was just as lost as he was.

Alecia "Lee" and Nathan "Nat" Digby are just a little lost after their marriage almost ends in scandal and disgrace. These two want to leave England and start their lives over. Alecia is at odds with her self-righteous and abusive father. Her father won’t release her dowry until she has a child and Nat is unable to have children. They are both attracted to Palu before they even know who he is. Their friend Daniel is also Palu's childhood friend so he introduces everyone. It doesn't take long for Lee and Nat to find they are not only physically attracted to Palu but they care for him deeply. I guess the saddest part of this story is that these two have been muddling through life waiting for a catalyst to make their lives complete.

Other than the conflict between Lee and Nat and her father this story is about three people finding each other and realizing they are meant to be together. This is a shorter story than the other novels but it isn't short of emotional upheaval and hot, steamy sex. I do wish that something bad had happened to Hardington. The man is a self-centered idiot that needs to be taken out and given a lesson in courtesy and honor. This is a quick read. I will warn that there is m/m sex in this story for those that don’t enjoy those types of stories.

Amazon.com Synopsis:

"Brothers in Arms, Book Six Gregory Anderson has reluctantly returned to England in 1817 after more than seven years sailing the world. Half Polynesian, Gregory is caught between two worlds. He isn't looking for love. He's only looking for a warm body with a modicum of wit and reasonable intelligence to help him get through the few short months he'll be in England. Nat and Alecia Digby's marriage, arranged when they were young and foolish, was almost ruined before it began when they both took lovers. They don't want to give up the erotic games they learned to play and enjoy, but they won't risk their marriage again by falling in love with someone else. When the three meet, they think it will be nothing more than a night or two of shared pleasure and erotic thrills. But the unthinkable happens, because love refuses to be forced into exile."

This entry in the series doesn't feel as rushed as Love's Surrender, but it is so improbable that it took away from the story. Gregory seemed a bit erratic in his thinking and demeanor at times. Alecia seemed all over the place, and it is extremely hard to reconcile the "shy, awkward" part with the bold siren who knows what she wants. The two extremes don't mesh very well, and I wouldn't know if I could count on her in a crises or not. All-in-all, it did not meet expectations based upon earlier entries in this series. Hopefully, the next one will be a winner.

This is book 6 of a series and I wish I had started from book 1 simply so that I could understand the scene. This is historical romantica/erotica. Gregory Anderson is the son of a famous British naturalist and a Polynesian woman. He doesn't look English or think English. Sexually comfortable with both men and women, he is introduced to Nat and Alecia Digby and falls head over heels in lust, a lust that quickly turns to love as he gets to know them in and out of bed. The sex is hot. I would have prefered a longer story, but I felt the emotional connection to the characters. I spoke with the author at RT (where I won the book) about books where the menage is not expected to be permanent and others, like this one, where it is. A happy ending was had by all.

Well it was different then the other I've read of this series. It did answer my question as to whom Anne Goode married from her,Brett and Freddy's story. This story is no a full length novel but it still covers all the facts. This is about a half breed Polynesian/ Englishman Gregory 'Pula' Anderson that comes back to England for a short time but he finds himself in lust with Nat & Alecia Digby a married couple that had come hard times in the beginning of their marriage but has been having a second man in their bed to help the couple in a way. Nat & Alecia also fell in lust with this stranger and they take him right home into their marriage bed where their heart may be captivated in each other.

Excellent read. This one has a twist, the man and woman are bonded [married:] and they add a man to their relationship. The man is a famous naturalist [and the son of another naturalist and a Tongan woman:]. Emotional adjustments and social complications abound; with racial prejudices added to prejudices against nontraditional relationships. Each book however has done very different things with this concept.

Series is very sequential. Read in order if at all possible.

This one did not grab me as much as the other books in this series. There was no build up to the relationship or the sex so I didn't feel any of the sexual tension that I would imagine should have been there. Plus, there was a whole lot of dishonesty in the beginning on the part of Nat and Alicia, which, in my opinion, Palu forgave much too quickly. After that, things seemed like they were going to look up for the story but it then ended rather abruptly.

I think if there had been a more lead in and build up and if the ending would have been more developed (i.e. not so abrupt), I would have enjoyed this one more. So, yeah, not my favorite book in this series.

The story was allright but didn't do much for me. It was so peripheral to the Brothers in Arms so while the characters were interesting I keept wanting to hear about the other men. I didn't like the couple's obsession with money although I understand that it was a big issue in those days. The ending was too HEA in some way. So I'm rushing on to the next in this series hoping to have more of my favourite people because I'm really in love with the authors characters despite only 3 stars to this one.

Actually not bad. A sex fest for sure, but if you expected anything less after five previous books you're in denial. I'll admit I skimmed some of the sexing but the story it self was different. Nat and Alecia have gone through so much, hurt each other so badly, yet forgave and moved on. I appreciated their connection and love for each other.

Palu (Anderson) adds some to their dynamic but I didn't think he was fleshed out as well as he could have. The instant lust I got, the insta love not as much. But the book had a nice ending and kept my interest overall so three solid stars.

I liked this even better than the first book I read by her - though all the same comments apply.

Yes I was attracted by the cover - how not? In the end it is the characterizations that make this though. I just loved the 3 main protaganists. They were flawed, disillusioned, made bad judgments but were just so heartwarming too.

Personally I don't need there to be quite so much sex in a book but I know others like it. A real feelgood book.

I loved this one. Gregory has to be one of my favorite charactors thus far. Nat and Alecia were likable and sweet. I loved the chemistry between the three it was red hot! I wish it was longer because to be honest it was too short and I found some parts to be rushed. But this one really made for a good quick read.

Loved the story, just wish it was longer so we could see Alecia, Nat and Palu (Gregory) together more at the end and so some of the other issues could have had more time to be addressed.

I think this is one of my favorites in the series, so far.

I have to say that I loved Palo's gentle nature, yet strong personality. He's unsure of himself, yet very confident in what he wants. The sex scenes were hot and the romance was great. I really enjoyed this read. I'll be ordering more from this series.

This triangle has a lot of of themes going on. An exotic male from an Island comes to London and meets couple. The married couple aren't very mature in life. They are a bit shallow and low on funds. Hard to imagine an hea for them but it happened and I believe.
