Life in the Vrail #1

Lurin's Surrender

Rate this book
It's the hefty bounty on his head that draws Captain Mara Seni to Lurin Vez, not his darkly handsome visage, his intelligence, or his compelling, electric blue eyes. When she captures him, however, she very quickly discovers that the legendary sensual skills of the Thesha are no myth and Lurin means to use every skill he possesses to win his freedom.

As the first story in the Life in the Vrail series by Marie Harte, LURIN’S SURRENDER is a red hot read that delivers on the sci fi as much as it sizzles. As a fan of Harte’s Contemporaries, I want to go ahead and try her other books. She has a huge backlist collection in various genres but since I needed a Sci Fi book for a challenge I’m doing on our Goodreads group, I picked this one.

LURIN’S SURRENDER is a novella that packs quite the punch. Not only is it a really hot red, but it also has a lot of tremendous worldbuilding. Although this is the first in the series, I’ll admit I was a tiny bit lost in the very beginning. It’s definitely heavy on the Sci Fi even though there is a good amount of Romance in it so that required some adjusting. However, once I was in the midst of things, it was much easier to get into. I really liked the heroine, Mara, but I do feel like Lurin took a little longer to warm up to. I think it’s because Mara shields herself so much that Lurin really need to work to break down those defenses. But since I love a strong heroine, I really liked Mara’s personality.

Short and sexy, this novella is a great read if you need a pick-me-up or if you want to dip your toes in some Sci Fi Erotica.

Given that I like dark fantasy books as long as there is romance tied into it and a happy ending, this book was right up my alley. There is a good amount of non-consent/reluctance in the story but I didn't have a hard time with it. The only part that did gross me out was the lack of sexual cleanliness, where the hero had sex with the enemy and then right after mated with the heroine. A shower in between would have definitely lessened the uhhggg factor in that scene.

"If she asked the right questions of the wrong person, she could end up in real trouble."

Mara is a bounty hunter, not a lawman, not a judge. But the more she learns about this case she's on, the more she wishes she had just done the job.

Lurin isn't like most bounties, and not just because he looks human, but acts like something else. He doesn't protest his innocence, yet clearly thinks Mara has taken the wrong side... if only he can get her to see there is more to the story than she was told.

This done in one story has some interesting world building, and some genuinely laugh out loud moments. Mara struggles as she tries to balance her job with her instincts, then is given cause to fear she was manipulated, challenging her to really consider what she thought and felt, independently.

Great Sci Fi story with an entertaining plot from start to finish and enjoyable characters. Goes in a new type of direction and stayed fresh till the end.
Captain Mara is a great heroine and I loved Lurin and also Gren, who is not the hero.
Mara’s crew were interesting too.
Lots and lots of sex, some due to having two sexually deviant women as the baddies. I just would have liked to know what their punishment ended up being.
Read and reviewed many years ago as I enjoy this authors books but reviews missing.
Great to find these republished and available in KU.

Parts of the story seemed a bit disjointed to me, meaning I'd be reading about one thing and it would end quickly and jump to another. I went back and forth 2-3 times to make sure I didn't accidentally push the 'next page' more than once.

Also, I'm not sure what Lurin's 'species' actually meant/was and how Gern didn't have the mark and how Mara was immune at some point to Lurin and what the whole dagger cutting on the blue mark actually meant and what exactly were the nobeless and her daughter.

So while I enjoyed the story I would have liked a bit more clarity on the going on's and what they meant. Will continue on to Thief of Mardu.

An erotic sci-fi journey

Mara is all work all of the time. Until her bounty hunting brings her Lurin. This fated mate story in space has a fair plot. Wrongly accused Lurin is on the run and caught by Mara and her crew. Of course that’s just the beginning of the story. The rest includes dark female baddies and some heavily sexual scenes. Cool romance read in a sci-fi world.

In the world of the Vrail, there are those who just need to be challenged. Captain Mara and her crew chase after bounties and freely enjoy the more steamy side of life. But an assignment to return Lurin to his accusers presents a little more danger than normal. Will Mara's secret fantasies become the dreams of her future? Female villains, unexpected diversions and an secret worth dying for.

Hard to imagine a love story buried in all the bounty hunting but it’s there and it’s really sweet!

Honest opinion! Well worth re-reading in the future! A lot of sex, but enjoyable. The author made the story work. There was plenty of emotions and feelings. There were parts that made me laugh too!

This one was a freebee on Amazon and probably the first time in a long while that a book actually has a beginning and an end. With that being said, the writing, and editing were fine but it contained too much sex. While those elements are usually what I require for the majority of the books I read, this had too much of it.

A solid three since it defied common customs for a book just under 150 pages.

Quick, short and hot. There isn't much depth, but I still liked the characters and felt some connection to them throughout the plot.
