Looks can be deceiving. A fact sometimes learned at the pointy end of a blade. It made for a very short learning curve. Underestimating an opponent was a common mistake made by people wielding power. But when the most elite sect of assassins were involved, that blunder could prove a particularly fatal one. In times of subterfuge and plotting, though, it was clear they were not the only ones with tricks up their sleeves, and sometimes death was a two-way street.

May 2024 reread: I meant to put off starting this so that I could catch up on other reads, but as soon as #3 ended, I had to keep on going. I loved this book and it still deserves my original 5 star rating. Everything I wrote below holds true and I will jump immediately into book 5.
Original Review: Oh man, these are so good! I love Hozark and his scrappy band! These books are so much fun and I've loved getting to know each of the characters (well, with the possible exception of Laskar--there is much about him that bugs me, from the first time I met him and so far that has not changed). As with the others, this was held plenty of action, fights, death (because when you're dealing with space assassins, naturally you need death), but also friendship and humor. In this episode, Hozark and company are still in search of Hap's father, but they are also seeking to find the mastermind in the council of twenty who is behind the kidnapping and excessive violence. I've really enjoyed watching the development of the various relationships within his crew and see the genuine fondness grow among them. Even though Ghalians work alone and Hozark has always worked alone, I've enjoyed watching how working with this crew has been good for him. I can't wait to find out how this epic series is going to end up! Throughout the series, I've had this sense that this story would be great as an RPG with a really good storyline and I still think so. If you like action, adventure, space pirates, mystery and mayhem, this is the series for you!

There is so much action going on! I really enjoyed the flow and expansion of character development. I have a bad feeling about Laskar though. Something about him seems off, like he's hiding something. I'm waiting for the final showdown between Hozark and Samara.

I think this is my new favourite guilty pleasure series, in the best way possible. I didn't expect to have this kind of reaction, but these keep getting better and more action packed as they go. The story arc Baron has created is one that keeps drawing me in, a nice way to turn my brain off because his writing is so descriptive and throws you directly into the world.
This continues basically directly from the previous book, so I would recommend reading the others in the series with it, but that's not a bad thing with a series this short. I'm hoping the grand finale stands up to what I've read, but I have super high hopes considering we've brought everything together. This is gonna be good!
This is the fourth book in Scott Baron’s, Death From the Shadows; Space Assassins 4 and by far the best in the series so far. The author has taken care to fully flesh out all of the major characters and applied quite an excellent use of the descriptive language in describing the different worlds, aliens, and circumstances the characters found themselves in. At this point in the series only one loose end is an unknown although there are several characters that have unfinished endings as it should be since we still have Space Assassins 5 to read. I can’t wait to get my hands on book 5!

**I received a free ARC from BookSirens and am leaving this review voluntarily.** I am really enjoying this series. Hozark et al have been a really fun trip so far. At times, they crack me up with their back and forth. The dialogue is witty and fast-paced. I love the world Baron has created. It reminds me a great deal of the banter/wit in the show Firefly.
Ozark, and his rather odd combination of party members, are off on a rescue mission to save a young boy who is a vital piece of the Council of Twenty’s plan for world dominance. If you are asking yourself, what could go wrong? Well, let me say plenty and much of it even a professional assassin could not have expected. I’m taking about the fourth book in the “Space Assassins” series call “Death from the Shadows”. This audiobook along with the series consist of a blending of both fantasy and science fiction. It is the work of Scott Baron and the audiobook edition is very well narrated by Eric Bryan Moore. The story follows a trained assassin who is ultimately on a mission of revenge which is forced to pivot to a mission of redemption rather than of death. It is a standalone series covering early details from the Dragon Mage series, by the same author. If you enjoy action, adventure, and excitement, I recommend you give this series a try.
This fourth audiobook opens with a battle between two powerful Vislas. Much like kings of old, these rulers often battle for property, persons, or prestige. Unfrequently do not see them fighting one another. However, that is part of the story itself, so no spoilers. We have the ever-present council of twenty which appears to be the ones pulling the strings and manipulating those they have control over. For anyone that would oppose this organization, there is only pain, suffering, and even death. Our band of rescuers will come face-to-face with the magically formidable group that has much of the known universe at its beck and call. Ozark and his team will face some of the most powerful enemies in this series thus far.
With the earlier mission directive nearing completion, the current group will have to learn to get along with another newly added crew member. What makes their job even more difficult is that this new member does not understand the sacrifices made to bring him onboard and makes the other’s jobs much more difficult. It is nice to see some of the interaction and training the others take in befriending this member along with the investment of time and materials. Because of this, things begin to once again function like a precision time piece and the team is off to close things up.
As with the previous audiobooks in the series, the listener is fed some new information of both a few of the characters and locations. We get segments which are like prequels to this prequel, I know, meta. I liked it. We are also often introduced to one or more new characters and this story is no exception. We find ourselves in front of Orken (sp?) a Zumaki (dragon like creature) trainer. I have a feeling we will see more of him, or his dragons, in future tales. One existing character that continues to be rather gruff and unpolished is Bud. His language, actions, and communication remind me of an uneducated worker, which may be the right thing for a past space pirate. He has some growing up to do, and I feel we will see more of him going forward.
Like previous stories, we get time to travel to new places with different people. You really get a sense that this universe created by Baron is vast and dangerous. In one of the scenes, we see the level some will go to in an attempt to prevent others from being rejoined. A poison which can kill is added to a sweet that once tased cannot be refused and is often shared with many others. It reminded me of the Next Generation Star Trek episode where glasses were used to deliver pure pleasure and later it was found to be a tool used to incapacitate the crew and take over the ship. This sweet was much like that and the Council is the only one that controls the cure. This requires the team to divert from its original plans in the hope of saving one or more members of the crew. We are even given a view into a most unexpected character, and we are unsure if they are here to help or hinder the team.
The audiobook narration was performed by Eric Byron Moore. He has voiced the entire series up to this point, and I hope he continued until it is done. The audio performance is professional, error free, and clear. I enjoy how smooth his voice is along with his ability of keeping track of the many characters. When I start a new book in the series, I can rest assured I will be hearing the same group from the previous ones.
For parents and younger listeners, this audiobook contains a fair amount of vulgar language and some mature subject matter. There are also a few scenes that may be considered to be violent or graphic in nature. The author has never stated that he has intended this series for younger listeners, yet I think many could enjoy it. I would only recommend this series to more mature listeners because of this.
In summary, the book continues to give the listener a view into the complex life of Ozark and his friends. We see that what appears to be a simple goal at first often is more complex and dangerous even for a trained assassin. I find the characters, mostly, likable and the locations vivid and detailed. I can say that I’m always entertained while I listen and find that the author often can surprise me along the way. Great storytelling and narration make this series one worth listening to.
DEATH FROM THE SHADOWS Space Assassins #4 By: Scott Baron
First off, I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Death from the shadows is the fourth book in the Space Assassins series. After a little break with the series, I decided to pick up this one, considering I was feeling a little reading slump coming and these books are filled with enough action to keep me going.
Though the plot is slow due to the fact what is happening, it still has enough action scenes to keep the stakes high enough. It feels a bit like a bridge book to the fifth and final one, but I can forgive that considering this book gives more insight into the characters and their dynamics together. Their bonds grow stronger and stronger because of all the things that are happening. The road to their end goal is long and of course, filled with danger, so they just have to work together. Some characters do that better than other ones, which gives a good portion of fun and humor that is needed in the time it takes place. Found family is one of my favorite tropes to read about, and this definitely has it. They all want to help each other and go far to do so, making it also more realistic that sometimes they win more fights, something I had a bit of trouble believing in the other books. Due to the insight on how everyone trains (which doesn’t slow the book down, in my opinion) that disbelief carried away.
The book did start a great way; the prologues are always more an introduction to the atmosphere of the book and the politics it has; maybe even the world-building. If you like sci-fi because of this, I feel like this book might be for you, considering due to the somewhat slower-moved plot, the worldbuilding and politics were more in the spotlight. This is well-weaved together with the side characters, I always love to see characters that add to the world-building, which causes there to be fewer infodumps. it is still a lot to remember because they travel to many planets, but you don’t need to remember it all, and what you do need to remember, the writer repeats, making sure the reader doesn’t miss anything.
Overall, I do think this was the slowest of the book so far, but due to the action scenes that explore both the little family they found themselves and the world itself, I really enjoyed this book and I cant wait to see what the next one has in store!
I received a copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
The fourth book in this series continues with the further adventures of Hozark and his companions. Raised to be an assassin, Hozark and his band are on a mission to find the Council of Twenty. Some of the Council’s members have been attacking innocent planets, killing natives and capturing others to serve as slaves. They desire power and will stop at nothing to achieve it.
Hozark, his team of assassins and friends, are seeking these Vislas who are wreaking havoc wherever they desire. They must be stopped, and it is Hozark’s job to do just that. With plenty of action, great characters, fascinating worlds and space as background, this tale unwinds in an engrossing manner. Hard to put down, this book gives us much more information about the assassin lifestyle and what it takes to become a formidable member.
In search of a kidnapped power user, Hozark’s group must endure fighting, space jumping, taking care of the kidnapped man’s young son and the loss of a respected member of their own group. Now they have to find two people while keeping the young boy safe. This series is a delight to read. I strongly recommend this series to all science fiction/fantasy lovers. It’s right up your alley.
The plot thickens with a Visla Jinnik being controlled by the Council to commit atrocities in his name. He has hired the Wampeh Ghalian to find his son, Hapizanno, who the Council have kidnapped and are using as leverage against him. But this story is so full of twists and turns that the reader can’t hold out much hope for a good result.
Hozark and Demelza are most unusual Ghalian since they are working together as a team and have taken others on as team members too. Ghalian always work alone but circumstances are such that even other members of the Five accept the unusual arrangement.
I feel that this could be a five star book if it was better edited. There is too much repetition which becomes boring but it’s saving grace is the excellent world building and the good character depth. I certainly felt empathy for many of the characters such as Happizano Jinnik and Denni.
This book is part of a series and should definitely be read in order.

These space assassins are masters of infiltration and disguise. An order of the deadliest assassins in the galaxy, the third person dialogue in this book really explains a lot of the assassin lifestyle and how they work. In this fourth installment it seems like the team goes two steps forward and one step back as they try to unravel the mystery and find the kidnapped Visla. Lots of twists and suspense that kept me engaged from page one to the very end. There is plenty of violence and fighting, hand to hand as well as with magic. But it is well done, as is the entire plot as it flows from one thing to the other in smooth transitions. I love all of the characters and they have plenty of depth and personality. Excellent story and looking forward to the next book. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.

This review is going to be much like the previous reviews for this series mainly because I don’t really have anything new to say. This book is much like the previous books in the series in terms of action and character development. I enjoyed seeing Bud and Henni’s interactions and how they got out of some tough situations they were in and also Hozark and Samara’s annual interaction of the book.
While this book was good, it was a lot harder for me to get into for some reason and it took until the last quarter of the book or so until I found myself hooked the same way that the previous books did. But it did eventually get to that point. And I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.
Received as a review copy, this is an honest review. The journey to reunite Happizano with his missing father isn't exactly as easy as they'd assumed it would be. Jumping to to various worlds, chasing down down clues, always a step behind Darius Jiinik's kidnappers. Unravelled throughout the story is just what is happening to Hap's father is stark and haunting... bringing harsh consequences to the worlds' the Council strokes upon. While the threat against Happizano is known;.Henni's unique and mysterious abilities slowly surface and mark her as a new target to be used for nefarious means. Another brilliant adventure that keeps captivated the whole way through, highly recommended.
Another great book in this series. Hozark and his team kick butt again. Excellent characters and plot. Tons of constant action. Plenty of fighting and plotting. No graphic sexual content but lots of violence. But nothing too gory. Awesome read. Looking forward to the next book in the series. I think it's going to be the last but am not sure. Either way it should be entertaining. It reminds me of “Star Wars” and I recommend for all ages. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
The continuing saga of Hozark and his motley crew. Still searching for Haps father, clues galore leading to more traps. More depth on Henni and her magic, certainly more excitement to come in book 5. This saga flows well and you enjoy reading the book until suddenly you're at the end of yet another episode of the Space Assassin's. Now just looking forward to book 5, which I'm sure will be as exciting and enlightening as the others.

I was really hoping that the plot would have moved a little bit more but I guess all the plot lines will wrap up in the next book. I still don’t like how famous the assassins are. It seems like everyone knows about them to the degree that one of masters eating at a restaurant increases the restaurant’s popularity. Why is the ruling structure of assassins common knowledge? The story is fun and the characters grow on you.
OMG! You left me hanging! Now I have to read book 5! Treachery, mayhem, and friends in dark places. Enemies galore and a battle worth fighting to save galaxies! Unexpected hero’s and villains that just won’t give up trying to take over everything. This entire series of books has been awesome! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
With all the flying around and meeting new faces the core characters are still progressing well as is the search for information and the mastermind of the new battles against the assassins amongst others. Baron does very well keeping the world building expanding whilst keeping to the main storyline and this helps in keeping me hooked.
I can see this author's writing improving from their first book in the series until now. There is less info dumping than in the previous books of this series, and the story development and flow is still engaging. This author still needs a good editor/proofreader.
Absolutely loving this series. The characters have really developed and story line has been brilliant. Would love to see these books translated to movies.
If you love good Sci Fi then this is a series you should read.
Spacefaring Magic Users and a cult of deadly assassins. What could be more fun than that. Interesting tales with a touch of humor. Great book and a great series.
I am really enjoying this series. So glad I have the next volume ready to go. I’m starting to form some hypothesis and can hardly wait to see how close I am to the actual situations.
