Discusses the exploration of the Louisiana Territory, the military and political battles fought over it, and the eventual selling of the territory by France to the United States.
Schlaepfer's The Louisiana Purchase is a must read for the history enthusiast as it contains a wealth of background, including the fact that Jefferson wanted New Orleans Port so desperately that he was willing to pay up to $17 million alone for it and ended up acquiring that and an entire territory for $15 because Napoleon Bonepart, who was focused on Great Britain, wanted to keep Americans as allies and did not want to "embroil me with them" (p. 49). Complete with maps and illustrations this westward expansion was considered to be the first Constitutional challenge as there was no way to bring in personal properties of French and other national lands as well as the people into citizenship of the United States.
