Strange - I seem to be the only person who does not like this book... The story is burlesque and absurd, the depiction of a society searching for food and sex, no values whatsoever except money. The englishspeaking people are stupid or agressive, Europeans even worse, an old stinking freak pops up every now and then and scares everybody to death for no comprehensible reason so ever... All this with a sense of humor which is totally childish and scatological. If you feel like laughing about caracters farting, eating, yelling and gulping for more than 600 pages, this will be the perfect book for you!

i received this book from one of my best friends, lucy, and in turn passed it on to someone special...
it's like a fairy-tale for adults...i can't think of any other way of describing it, except for the fact that it's excellent and amazing and all excellent and amazing people should read it.

Took me a long time to learn what to expect from this book. Unfortunately it’s sold as something of a high concept mystery, but the plot takes a back seat (far off in the nosebleeds, in fact) to seemingly random observations about very flawed characters. Its strength is in blending slice-of-life episodes that are cuttingly authentic with surreal irony and playful humour. It spends a long time speculating about the background and motivations of its villain which are never revealed, and its eccentric pacing isn’t vindicated by any revelatory conclusions. Still, it’s wonderfully colorful and unpredictable with writing that stands the test of time.

Actually 2.5 stars. It took a long time to finish this book because it was WAY TOO WORDY. It was written in a soap-opera style with one improbable happening after another. The action went on way too long and then ended without a satisfactory conclusion. In fact, I might actually change the star rating to 2 in a few days. I need to think about it some more.

Though I did not like the book, I can't deny it is well written with a great deal of mystery and suspens, and a lot of cynical humor, in all fairness and objectivity, so I can understand why some people like it. But not everyone will, I guess it depends on your sensitivity.

Subjectively, I found it very offensive socially and I could not get to like any of the characters. They all seem caricaturally misandrist and sometimes racist visions of men : unfaithful, machist, egocentric, abusive towards women, even the "good" guys, violent, money & ambition driven, alcoholic etc. And the female characters are very shallow (girlfriends or the girls of one night basically who have absolutely no power nor mind except one excentric old lady towards the end).

But I read 'til the very end, all 600 pages, just to understand and was therefore very disappointed, as many other readers pointed out, there is NO explanation in the end. It makes no sense at all... but I guess if you don't mind despicable characters, if you are a bit cynical, it may be quite a funny book and an enjoyable read.

L'histoire me laisse perplexe...

What an eccentric novel! It’s long, and the story seemed to drag on and on without making much progress. The writing style was puzzling, jerky in places, and some of the expressions most unusual, but perhaps that is due to the translation from French to English.
The main characters are Florent, his wife Elise (who want to own a restaurant and who receives the brunt of ER’s deviousness), a 6-year old boy called Monsieur Emile whose mother is by all accounts a prostitute who cares little for her son, Florent’s friend Picquot who is a brilliant chef, along with a couple more main characters. Appearing throughout the book is an old man with stinky feet named Egon Ratablavasky who is portrayed as ghost-like, appearing from nowhere and seeming to know everyone’s business.
Florent seems to be hot under the collar all the time. Elise is s scaredy-cat wife with no apparent backbone. Monsieur Emile is a 6-year old uncouth, impolite drunkard who swears, with a cat named Breakfast. The characters were not particularly likeable. I had a hard time empathizing with them.
There is an interesting diversion to Florida which, while one of the more interesting parts of the book, could have been left out entirely. It really served no practical purpose to advancing the story.
Despite all that, I did enjoy the book for its quirkiness, but the overall length of the book together with the “nowhere” ending left me cold. After all those 600 pages I was most disappointed in the ending. There was never any explanation for the presence or motivation of Egon Ratablavasky , and knowing that motivation for his attempts to ruin Florent were never explained.

A strange sort of mystery story about a young man who strikes something of a Faustian bargain with a stranger without really knowing what he is getting into. Most of the action (and there is a lot of it) takes place in Montreal with a relatively brief (but important) interlude in a nearby community. The cast of characters is lively and (mostly) engaging, and while it often strikes a comic note, there is tragedy afoot, which I found somewhat off-putting. The demonic figure of Ratablavasky is drawn with cunning and skill, as are the protagonist's (Florent) attempts at launching his dream business (a restaurant), and an antiques business he uses to fuel his dream. Overall, I found it to be an engaging narrative in a darkly comic vein, but I did think Monsieur Emile deserved a better fate.
