The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane. Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats. Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters. LINDA LAEL MILLER One Last Weekend College sweethearts Teague and Joanna Darby, once passionately in love, are on the brink of divorce. Or the perfect chance to fall for each other all over again-one steamy encounter at a time...
Teague and Joanna are about to call it quits on their marriage. Their friend and attorney tells them to go spend a last weekend together at their beach cottage and actually talk to each other. It's obvious from the start that they still care about each other, they have just lost the ability to truly communicate. When bad weather strands them at the cottage their passion for each other comes back to the surface, opening up their hearts also. Teague had put so much effort into his business that in the last few years it had taken all his time. Now he's ready to enjoy the fruits of his labors but he makes his changes without talking to Joanna. She sees them as a way for him to put her aside, that he doesn't love her anymore. He has stopped talking to her about his dreams for the future. Meanwhile, Joanna is a successful cookbook author who is also ready to try something different. But she can't seem to reach her husband to share her dreams. She's seen so many of their friends split that she's afraid she's seeing those signs in her own marriage and is trying to protect herself. She's actually pretty insecure about her ability to keep her husband. I loved the way that they finally started talking to each other after Joanna lost her temper and yelled at Teague. I loved the phone conversation with their daughter. There's a great twist at the end that I suspected was going to happen, but it was terrific anyway.
JENNIFER APODACA You Give Love a Good Name Lexie Rollins is a wedding planner on the lam. All she did was defend herself (with a staple gun) against a sleazy groom-who knew the Assault and Battery charges would stick? Now Lexie's "vacation" at an exclusive resort has put her at the top of gorgeous bounty hunter Nick Vardolous's list. And Nick always gets his woman-every which way imaginable...
Really enjoyed this story. Lexie has been helping out with her mother's wedding planning business while mom recovers from a heart attack. She really hates it and can't wait to be done. Her mom is claiming she's not well yet, and her brother and sister aren't holding up their ends of the business, leaving Lexie to deal with it all. Lexie had finally had enough. When she had to defend herself against a groom-to-be, she got arrested on assault charges. Once out on bond, she starts having to deal with a stalker. Problem is that no one believes she's in danger, so she packs up and heads to San Diego to get away - forgetting about her court date. Enter Nick, bounty hunter. He's determined to bring her back, until he finds out about her stalker. Now he wants to protect her as much as he wants to get her out of his hair. There is an intense attraction between the two of them. They decide to go with the physical but keep their emotions out of it. The difficulty is that Nick sees the strong but vulnerable woman who's being taken advantage of. He wants to stay away, having been burned by a relationship where he hadn't been able to protect the woman from a vengeful ex, but he can't do it. The more time he spends with her the more he wants her. I really liked the way that he believed her about the stalker and believed in her and her dreams. I liked Lexie's determination to keep herself safe. When her family was no help she took matters into her own hands. I really liked her interactions with Nick and the way she didn't let him steamroller her into doing something she didn't want to do. I was glad to see her go after her dream of writing while she was away from her family and their dramas. It was fun to see her go after Nick for what she wanted and deal with her growing feelings. Loved seeing her "torture" him with her attitude. I also liked the way she understood his motivation to be a bounty hunter and the way she supported his dreams for his future. Her confrontation with the stalker at the end was resolved in the perfect way.
SHELLY LAURENSTON My Kind of Town (The Long Island Coven #1) Deputy Kyle Treharne of seaside Smithville, North Carolina, hates Yankees-even exotically beautiful ones like Emma Lucchesi. The sexy New Yorker's got trouble written all over her, and she knows more than she's telling about the increasingly strange goings-on in his town. But if the lady's got a few tricks up her sleeve, so does the lawman. And it's high time for every wicked thing to be deliciously revealed..
This story was better than I expected since I'm not really into shifter stories. Emma had come to Smithville looking for a power source for her coven. She didn't expect to be attacked by something she couldn't quite identify. She just knew that it had to be destroyed. She didn't expect to end up taken to the hospital by a big sexy lawman - and kept there. There was something odd about the residents of the town, other than the fact that they were all incredibly good looking. When she's attacked in her hospital room Kyle takes her to his home where the weirdness starts to increase. When the other ladies of the coven come to check on her, their compulsion to come is finally explained. I liked Emma a lot. She was a bit freaked out by Kyle and the rest but they don't particularly intimidate her. I loved seeing her stand up to Kyle. Some of the conversations between them were hilarious. Her drunk scene was fun. As a shifter Kyle knows what it's like to have secrets. When he rescues Emma there's something about her that tells him she's more than just an accidental tourist. He's really attracted to her and very possessive around his stepbrother and others. I loved the interactions between them. He's protective but also just plain has fun with her. I really enjoyed the heat between them and how things ended up working out. I also enjoyed the rivalry between Kyle and his stepbrother. It was fun to see how their insults sort of confused Emma until she learned the truth about them.
This gets filed on my romance and paranormal bookshelves because of these three stories, two are romance and the last (Laurenston's) is paranormal. I imagine this will be a bit off-putting to those not into shapeshifters and witches...so those of you just looking for romance may want to skip the last story.
That being said, the last story was my favorite. I would give it 4 stars. The first two stories were fairly unforgettable in the way that they are like hundreds of other romance stories....nice while you read them but forgettable. The last story had the hot scorching sex and men to die for...more memorable to me ;) There was a witch element, which I don't usually read, but still very enjoyable. I also like the secondary characters and look forward to reading Belong to the Night since it features the story of some of these secondary characters. Luckily I already have it from the library - yay!
I just got this for the Shelly Laurenston story (and that's the only one I read). This was disappointing. I didn't think this had the humor I'm used to. I didn't like Kyle, he was too Alpha asshole, possessive, etc.
In case it's not obvious, Sun, Sand & Sex is an anthology of three stories each with the theme of...er...sun, sand and sex. I like it when books are titled like that. It keeps things nice and simple.
The three stories are fairly straightforward in that the plots are simply basic romances. There are no twists or surprises, at least not for the reader, and as such, are pure entertainment and escapism.
One Last Weekend by Linda Lael Miller tells the story of a couple whose marriage has drifted apart and decide to get divorced simply because it seems the right thing to do. However, they are convinced by their mutual friend and divorce attorney to spend one last weekend at the cottage they have on an island in Washington.
It's there they come to realise that they actually still love one another immensely and re-discover how to communicate with each other.
This a very short, but sweet love story about two people who discover how sex can break down all sorts of barriers. Fun and hot.
You Give Love a Good Name by Jennifer Apodaca is the story of a wedding planner and a bounty hunter. After things go wrong at a wedding in which a staple gun gets used to staple something other than paper Lexie goes on vacation. However, because of her forgetful lawyer, she ends up missing a court date and so it's up to Nick to bring her back.
Whilst there is an interesting suspenseful element with Lexie insisting she's being stalked and everyone else, with the exception of Nick, not believing her the romance seemed a little forced. Nick's too aggressive even with Lexie. Whilst he may champion her cause, apparently she can't except a job at the resort she's staying because he says so. Never mind that that's not his decision to make.
My Kind of Town (The Long Island Coven #1) by Shelly Laurenston is the whole reason I bought this anthology. Emma is a powerful witch and is sent by her coven to the town of Smithville, North Carolina to investigate supernatural goings on. When arriving in town, however, her car is totalled by a huge dog and she is 'rescued' by Kyle, one of the town's deputies. Who happens to be a black leopard shifter.
I can't determine what it was but this didn't engage me as much as the Magnus Pack or Pride books. Perhaps it was because I'd read both of those amazing series first and I might have enjoyed this more had I read this first and then moved on.
Because the characters are all brand new (even the town is different; Smithville, North Carolina and not Smithtown, Tennessee) newcomers to the series will find it serves as a perfect introduction to the shifter world created by Shelly Laurenston.
It contains all the elements to be found in her books; snarky dialogue between all the characters, hilarious scenes (I found the drunk Emma scene so funny as well as another scene where she keeps poking his chest) and steamy sex.
On the whole Sun, Sand & Sex was a nice anthology, a quick and light read with good, if not outstanding stories.
Sun, Sand, Sex by Linda Lael Miller, Shelly Laurenston and Jennifer Apodaca Grade: B
“And how would I call you, Nick? Look you up under one-night stands in the phone book?”
Sun, Sand, Sex is a collection of three novella/short stories by three amazing authors. I enjoyed the book as a whole but I would have bought it just to read My Kind of Town by Shelly Laurenston. All three stories are very fun and this is a great book for lying around by the pool or beach this summer.
One Last Weekend by Linda Lael Miller is the shortest story and revolves around a couple, Teague and Joanna, who are finalizing their divorce. Their lawyer, who happens to be a long time friend, insists they spend one last weekend together at their cottage before signing the divorce papers. I wish One Last Weekend had been a little longer but I still really enjoyed it. I found both of the characters to be adorable and I was so happy with everything that happened for them. Overall grade: B
You give Love a Bad Name by Jennifer Apodaca takes place with wedding planner Lexie Rollins hiding away at a couples resort in San Diego. Lexie was charged with assault by a former groom and has skipped town because she knows someone is stalking her. Nick Vardolous is the bounty hunter charged with bringing her back but these two have a past and Nick will do everything he can to save the woman he cares for. This started out great and I loved the chemistry and banter between Lexie and Nick but the ending ruined the whole thing and I found myself really disappointed with how things turned out. Overall Grade: C
My Kind of Town by Shelly Laurenston was the whole reason I had to read Sun, Sand, Sex. I am a huge fan of her Pride series and while this book doesn’t involve any of the characters we know and love it does take place in Smithville and is filled with all types of crazy shifters. Kye Treharne is a deputy and in charge of taking care of the cute human Emma Lucchesi who has stumbled into the wrong town. Little does Kyle know theres much more to Emma and he soon can’t get enough of her. I devoured this story and am now wanting more! I love the spin off that might take place her with Emma and her friends and all i can say is PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN! I loved Emma and Kyle plus all the new characters that are introduced and I really want to go back to Smithville and see what crazy things happen next. Overall Grade: A.
Sun, Sand, Sex is a good book even with the ups and downs of the three different stories. I think any romance or paranormal romance fan will find what they are looking for in this book and like I said before if you are a fan of Shelly Laurenston, her novella is worth buying the whole book.
Teague & Joanna Darby are in the process of getting a divorce when their attorney suggests they take a weekend together to discuss things. Mainly because they can't agree on who will get custody of the dog. They get stranded at their cabin due to a storm & boy do they make good use of their time alone. No sand or sun in this story, but plenty of sex. And the pair decides they do still love each other & they want to work on keeping their marriage intact.
Lexie meets Nick while she's working his sister's wedding. Nick tries to take her home for one night, but she's not a one-night-stand kinda woman & he's not a relationship kinda man. So the pair go their separate ways, but each one can't get the other of his/her mind.
Four months later, Lexie is in hiding after stapling a groom's pants to his waist when he hit on her at his own wedding & said groom files assault charges. She has a stalker, but no one believes her so she hires a PI & hides out, hoping the PI will find the stalker before she has to go to court for her trial.
Nick is a bondsman sent to bring her home so she won't miss her court date again. When she tells him about the stalker, he's the one person who does believe her & he decides to keep her safe. But he can't be with her like he wants to because he never mixes work with pleasure (). But he's a bit of a dumbass until he decides to give in.
Emma comes to Smithville on a mission for her Coven. She realizes right away that something is not right with this town. Everyone is too big. And too good-looking. She's herded to the local hospital after a car accident by Deputy Kyle & he tries to keep her there until he can figure out what's going on with her, because she shouldn't be in his town.
Lot's of hot sex in this one. And is typical of a Shelly Laurenston story, lots of laughs. I can't get enough of the Pride stories!
Absolutely love this series, I have read it so many times. Never gets old. Emma is a witch that ends up in a strange town after one of her covens spells go wrong. Kyle is a panther shifter deputy of said strange town. This town is majority shifters and they live very openly...bringing in and hunting their prey. Kyle and his family are so funny together...it’s priceless.
These books are always so entertaining, she portrays the characters exactly how you would picture them to be and act if they were to truly shift into an animal. Always so well written and full of great humor. This was a safe read, with a good ol boy shifting panther and a sweet, but naughty coven witch with an epilogue. If you are a shifter fan...this is a MUST READ series. And yes, you will probably actually thank me...so you are welcome.
A bit... Ok, usually I prefer my anthology to have a recognizable theme...other than the title. Or at least to be all in the same sub-genre.
The LLM - a second chance romance. The H/h are negotiating a divorce. The h has spent however many years they've been married essentially doing nothing to rock the boat. The H has spent that time getting his way. At some point, they stopped communicating, or maybe he just kinda forgot her. I'm not sure. There was no-one else for either one of them. He'd sold his company and bought a sports car. She'd spent entirely too much time alone not to read something into that. They go spend time at their seaside cottage on the advice of their lawyer/friend. And well, being forced to interact with each other lead to hot sex, a few heated discussions, revelations that his behavior made her feel insecure, etc.
I'm not familiar with the second author. The story was interesting I suppose. Heroine is the family doormat where everyone assumes she's going to deal with their mess. Her mother had a heart attack and dumped her business in the heroine's lap, the brother stole her key and had an affair using her apartment, a client/friend/something of said brother made a copy of the key and started stalking the h - after she'd stapled his pants shut (something about him flashing her at his wedding rehearsal), and also after he'd filed charges against her. The H was the brother to a previous client, and also a bounty hunter. He spent entirely too much time trying to marginalize the h while at the same time giving into the attraction. I wanted to kick him in the nuts more than a few times over the things he said to her.
Third... I would guess this loosely ties in to Laurentston's pride/pack/whatever series seeing as how there are mention of Smiths. it was...odd. The H was more creepy than sexy really, and I got the feeling "No" wasn't in his vocabulary. There was the usual set of quirky characters.
There are three seperate stories in this book, and they are pretty much go in order from the shortest to longest, and from the worst to best.
1) "One Lat Weekend" by Linda Lael Miller - 1 ★ There is so much I found unpleasant in this one. With how short it is, that's saying something.
First of all, I don't get the whole human concepts of the 'we lived together for 20 years but now we are strangers' and 'we love each other but we will treat each other like shitenemies anyway'. Oh, and 'let's have a lot of sex and then still insist we dislike each other in between'.
Secondly, we find out pretty early on that all the problems originate from the female character's head, and she has basically ruined her marriage with her insecurities. She is the one who didn't get to open her restaurant. She is the one who believes she is fat and ugly. She is the one who is looking to make up all kind of reasons for her husband to leave her. (How dare he suggest I have breakfast?! Doesn't he know I'm fat?! and 'He is looking at me… He must be thinking how ugly I got!') And she blames her husband for all her problems and tells him how much she hates him. It reaches absurdity levels. And thirdly, just how pointless this story is. So we get the main character's stupidity very clearly outlined (see above) and instead of her having to realize it and start working on being less venomous, in the end she just gets the world to bend to her, gets herself a baby to make her feel important again, and makes her husband get rid of the poor blameless car. Sometimes a car is just a car. Incredibly unsatisfying and irritating read.
2) "You Give Love a Good Name" by Jennifer Apodaca - 3 ★★★ The central of this compilation? An okay story where the main character finds herself finally fed up with the fact that her whole family treats her like shit, so she runs away to a resort to hide from a stalker and finds herself and finds herself a hot protector who will tell her how terrible and wrong those people who treat her like shit are. Although she will still defend them for some incomprehensible reason. It seems like a very standard story that ends with a dramatic moments you can see coming from very very far ahead.
3) "My Kind of Town" by Shelly Laurenston - 4-5 ★★★★★ Honestly, I don't even know why this story is even in this book, other than being the only reason I bought it. Fun and crazy like all other Shelly Laurenston's stories, this is actually a part of her shifter series and a beginning of a new promising spin-off.
LINDA LAEL MILLER One Last Weekend College sweethearts Teague and Joanna Darby, once passionately in love, are on the brink of divorce. When a ferry strike leaves them stranded together at their beloved beach cottage, it could be the most awkward weekend ever. Or the perfect chance to fall for each other all over again-one steamy encounter at a time. My Thoughts: I loved this story, I was weepy through most of it, which means it really clicked for me. I think it was really a beautiful story.
And Nick always gets his woman-every which way imaginable.
My thoughts: I liked this one not quite as much as the first story but I found the characters believable and the story had a good flow to it. The romance was decent as were the sexy times.
SHELLY LAURENSTON My Kind of Town Deputy Kyle Treharne of seaside Smithville, North Carolina, hates Yankees-even exotically beautiful ones like Emma Lucchesi. The sexy New Yorker's got trouble written all over her, and she knows more than she's telling about the increasingly strange goings-on in his town. But if the lady's got a few tricks up her sleeve, so does the lawman. And it's high time for every wicked thing to be deliciously revealed.
My thoughts: The story was my least favorite in the anthology. I have found Laurenston's stories to be really hit or miss for me and this one was a miss. Nothing really seemed to grab me and hang on. It was a good story but again nothing I particularly found captivating.
ONE LAST WEEKEND By Linda Lael Miller: When Teague and Joanna Darby's divorce lawyer and the couple's mutual friend Ted, tells them that a trip to their cottage could be all it takes to save their marriage. The couple was less then enthusiastic. But when a series of storms leaves them stranded at the cottage, it isn't long before they find the spark needed to save their marriage, with the added surprise of a new baby. *Found this short story to be cute, heart-warming and absolutely amazing! First novel I have read by Linda Nael Miller, but definitely won't be my last. :)*
YOU GIVE LOVE A GOOD NAME By Jennifer Apodaca When wedding planner Lexi Rollins leaves Santa Barbara due to a demanding family, an assault and battery charge and a stalker reeking havoc on her life, she doesn't expect to run into bounty hunter/ Greek God Nick Vardolous. Who is being paid to take Lexi back to the place she so desperately wanted to escape. But when a crazed groom-turned delusional stalker, starts leaving perverted messages on Lexi's laptop; it soon becomes a matter of life and death. When the stalker shoes up in San Diego, planning to make his claim on Lexi, whether she wants him to or not. *This short story by Jennifer Apodaca, had just the right amount of sex and the perfect amount of surprises and suspense!*
MY KIND OF TOWN By Shelly Laurenston When Emma Luchessi winds up lost and injured in the middle of Smithsville, North Carolina, she doesn't realize just how strange things are going to be. Not until she meets Deputy Kyle Treharne. *This short story was the perfect blend of love, honesty and bravery. The recipe for any story.
1. One Last Weekend by Linda Lael Miller. Divorcing couple Teague and Joanna go to their cottage for one last weekend before their divorce is final. The ending is as expected but the way the story is told is very good. Had me crying. Good story. ***
2. You Give Love a Good Name by Jennifer Apodaca. Cute, predictable story. Lexie met Nick at his sister's wedding. She was the wedding planner. They part after only kissing because she doesn't do one-night stands. Months later, she staples a guys pants to his body when he flashed her and with all the publicity, she takes off for awhile. Nick meets her at the hotel she's at because she missed a hearing date. He's still attracted to her, but then he doesn't mix work with pleasure, but then he's attracted to her. She could have cut out about 20 pages of his back and forth. Sweet sappy ending. Fair story. **
3. My Kind of Town by Shelly Laurenston. Emma goes to North Carolina because she thinks her coven has accidentally let loose a demon dog. Well the town is full of all kinds of animal shifters, including the deputy Kyle who wants to know why she's in town. Very funny and I loved Kyle and Emma together. Great story. ****
So using my handy-dandy average (not), I'm going to give this book a 3.5 based on the Linda Lael Miller and Shelly Laurenston stories.
I only read My Kind of Town by Shelly Laurenston so I can only review that story.
Emma, a hard-as-brass New Yorker, gets into an accident in a small town that isn't even on the map called Smithville, North Carolina. This is a weird town and most hate Yankees but she has something to hide and she needs to leave quickly. Unfortunately, Deputy Kyle has his sights on her and wants to know what she is hiding. And the antics ensue. Emma, we find out, is a witch on the hunt for some evil beast escaped from hell. The town is full of shifters who likes to keep to themselves. I love Shelley Laurenston's stories. This is book #1 of Long Island Cover and has lots of quirky humor, hard-against-the-wall sexy scenes, panty-melting growls from Kyle, grumpy characters in town, and lots of fast-paced action to please the PR reader in me! Even the writing style is awesome! The scene builds like a TV show or movie. In one scene, Emma gets attached by the big bad beast. Next scene, Kyle sees the attack from outside and runs in. Next scene, other shifters hear a boom or crash and they run to help. Next scene...well you get the idea. Fast-paced, good story building, steam pouring off the book! Kyle is just deliciously sexy! I loved it! It makes me want to read the next book in the series.
A very very short story about a couple that have been married for 20 years on the cusp of divorce, going for one last weekend to the cottage that they have had many happy memories in.
It was okay, but very short and seemed to basically be a few sex scenes strung between a few scenes of them arguing. But it was only about 60 pages long, so not much to judge it one!

You Give Love A Good Name by Jennifer Apodaca
I have to admit I couldn't get into this one, I read through it but it didn't really capture my attention

My Kind of Town by Shelly Laurenston
Another installment of the Pride series that I really loved. It as usual had a feisty heroine and a sext hero, and was awash in Laurenstons brand of wicked and sarcastic humour.
I read this for the Shelly Laurenston story - which I would score a 5 as a stand along, because I'm a rabid fan of Ms. Laurenston. She can write no wrong. The other two stories were good for contemporary romance, but that's not my thing.
One Last Weekend was about a divorcing couple trying to reconcile for one last weekend before they sign the paperwork. 4 stars.
You Give Love a Good Name was about a wedding planner who skipped a court date for a bogus charge because she's being stalked, then the bounty hunter sent after her turns out to be the one that got away. Of the three, that was the worst. 3 stars.
My Kind of Town was a paranormal romance about the Corolina Smithtown getting a new coven to protect them, and about Emma (witch) and Kyle (black panther shifter, deputy sheriff) getting together.
To me this was a strange anthology. I liked the stories but I don't know if the title is appropriate. One Last Weekend by Linda Lael Miller written in 2007 is a cutesy romance about a couple getting divorced and get stranded on an island at their summer beach house. My Kind of Town by Shelly Laurenston is a strange witchy/shapeshifter tale and is apparently an introduction to a series written by the author. I think I liked You Give Love a Good Name by Jennifer Apodaca the best. In this story the romantic male lead is a 'Stephanie Plum/Dog the Bounty Hunter' person and his quarry is the female romantic lead who is more licking her wounds not hiding from the law. There's a lot more action in this story as compared to the other two in the anthology. I would consider this book a good beach read.
Empty nesters on verge of divorce spend one last week end at beach cottage. OK story.
You Give Love A Good Name - Jennifer Apodaca
Very good & fun story - aspiring author/wedding planner is being stalked. And sued ... by a drunk groom who she injured in a hilarious manner when he became amorous. Sexy bounty hunter tracks her down ... very cute!
My Kind of Town - Shelly Laurenston
A witch has a car accident in Smithville, NC. Yes, Smithville, as in the Smith shifter family. These NC Smiths are just as funny, sexy and wacky as the Tennessee Smiths in SL's Pride series.
