Sir James George Frazer was a Scottish social anthropologist influential in the early stages of the modern studies of mythology and comparative religion. His most famous work, The Golden Bough (1890), documents and details the similarities among magical and religious beliefs around the globe. Frazer posited that human belief progressed through three stages: primitive magic, replaced by religion, in turn replaced by science.
He was married to the writer & translator Lilly Grove (Lady Frazer)

This book is to cultural anthropology what Origin of Species by Natural Selection is to Biology & the Life Sciences.
I read this book back in my early teenage years while I was into Druidry & British occultism. It is indispensable to those looking to gain a deeper understanding of the collective human psyche.

İnsanı anlama yolculuğunda bir kilometre taşı. İnsan topluluklarının neye nasıl inandığına dair, farklı coğrafyalardan yüzlerce binlerce örneklerle dolu inanç alanında yapılmış en kapsamlı çalışmalardan biri.

Frazer dünyanın her yerinden derlediği örneklere dinlerin, mitlerin, ayinlerin kökenlerini açıklama girişiminde bulunuyor.

This book, the second of twelve in the third edition of James G. Frazer's The Golden Bough, picks up right where the previous one left off. Frazer is examining the origins and meaning of a ceremony involving the "king of the forest" outside Rome. As before, he uses a comparative method with cultures from around the world to suggest the roots of the tradition recorded in Latin sources.

Among the material covered in this book is the idea of sacred trees and groves, matrilineal inheritance, and much else. To me a lot of this was truly eye-opening. I have been seeing history with new eyes. For example, I recently listened to a lecture series on the history of East Asia. Discussions of the succession of various dynasties made me think of some of Frazer's insights in this book.

Based on the first two volumes I've read so far, The Golden Bough is a dense but rewarding work. I look forward to the next installment.

This is the closest I can find to the edition I read. My copy was a 612 page public domain digital copy with a preface from Frazer dated June 1922. I've given it four stars, not for the writing style, though at times it was very direct and even humorous or blunt, but for the content. It is a study of the history of humankind's attempt to understand the world, life and itself first through magic then to religion and on to science. Fraser writing at the turn of the 20th century states that he in no way sees science as the end of this journey, he wonders what mode of understanding will follow. Good for him!
