I was glued to the screen throughout that finale. It's fascinating how all of the kids are now involved in the mystery, and since I believe that women are the manga's primary audience, I think there may be some romance involved.

Nonetheless, I found Ansu's behavior toward her best friend to be extremely offensive. I can't ignore things like this since I have experienced fat shaming in some way, and it truly leaves a horrible taste in my mouth all the time. This was incredibly pointless and gave Ange a bad impression.

The series is heating up and boy was it a ride! Volume two took all of the momentum building up from volume one and set off running and it was great! Anzu’s sister Yuzu plays more of a role which is nice, as she is only briefly there in volume one. This manga also gives a little more information about Makiko and it was terribly satisfying that she’s still living under the shadow of the first wife. I could feel her struggle as a single mom and can understand the stress of being compared to someone else. It was nice that her character could be humanized a bit, despite how ghoulish she appears in some panels.

Seems I spoke too soon also on how nobody recognized the main character, they actually addressed it which was nice. The sons recognize the daughters, but I’m still surprised that Makiko is that dumb, but I digress. Anzu is shaping up to be a manipulative queen and I’m living for it. The wildly inappropriate romantic subplots developing are also fantastic, I honestly don’t know what way things will go. I’m so intrigued by the brothers and it’s clear that something terrible has happened in the years between. I really liked both characters, especially Kiichi, and I can’t wait to learn more in the next volume.

This manga is the domestic thriller that I’ve really needed to break a reading slump and I’m having so much fun reading. The last page of this volume left me on the edge of my seat!

"The fact that you're smiling like that... Means that we've somehow made it through to where we are now, doesn't it?" - Moyashi Fujisawa, Burn The House Down Vol. 2
.
.
🖤 Anzu Murata snuck into the Mitarai residence under the guise of a housekeeper in order to ascertain the truth behind the fire 13 years ago – a fire for which her mother took all the blame. Sneaking behind the back of Makiko Mitarai, the harsh second wife of her father, Anzu expands her search of the house up to the forbidden second floor. There, she meets a suspicious shut-in and, thinking to take advantage of him, she attempts to make contact with him. But because of a certain mistake, she brings down Makiko's wrath.
.
.
🖤 Anzu knew it was Kiichi, the son that Makiko trying to hide from the public. Anzu tried to get closer with Kiichi in order to investigate more about Mitarai's family. However, Kiichi also knew she was Anzu, his childhood friend.
.
.
🖤 Meanwhile Yuzu made her own move by approaching Shinji because she doesn't want to burden her sister alone. Looks like Shinjii really likes Yuzu's companion and being friendly with her.

That ending had me gasping! Jeez Fujisawa sure knows how to leave a girl on the edge of her seat.

I have to say how much I'm enjoying the inclusion of Makiko's children, because it definitely adds a lot more drama and intrigue to the story when you have old crushes and friends entering the picture, and could very easily become suspicious of you and ruin your whole plan.

The only aspect that I didn't appreciate in this volume was the fat phobia displayed by our protagonist, Anzu, towards her best friend who is helping her out. It's unnecessary to the plot, and just pisses me off. It really doesn't add anything, or do anything, but make the MC seem like a bitch. Revenge against someone who ruined your life is one thing, being mean and hateful to your bestie is completely uncalled for. I hope that doesn't become a recurring theme going forward.

Besides that nastiness, I'm pretty excited for volume 3, because I know the story will only keep picking up pace.

Oh my God, this series is really ramping up the tension with this volume! Anzu's single-minded determination to find out the truth behind the fire all those years ago is fearsome to see. We also see some hints that Anzu will do whatever it takes to find out the information she needs. It's so suspenseful to see her both try to do her job, dodge the new wife, and try to distract the shut-in son. It's also nuts to see just how long Makiko schemed in order to steal the husband and crawl her way into a wealthy life. Also, Makiko is not only a horrible person, but she's also a clever person. Which is a bad combination for Anzu. The cliffhanger has me on the edge of my seat too! So intense!

I'm getting a "if you've never swam in the ocean, then of course a pool seems deep" vibe from the people who rave about this series. I'll keep going for now, but I'm not expecting much.

I was particularly bothered by the protagonist's dumbness and recklessness for someone who has been allegedly planning this grand revenge. I also could have lived without the casual fatphobia.

I'm not really invested in the mystery, but the dynamics between the two pairs of siblings are kind of okay I guess? And the ending was good? Let's see where this goes...

I'm hooked.

I like how the series got believable portrayals of a few different characters and little by little we get to see why they are the way they are and how situations can change people over time.

*probably spoilers*
Despite of what the mother did, it'd be a shame if her sons will be dragged through the mud because of her. I'm somewhat glad Anzu at least asked herself what would happen to Kiichi san if the truth would come to light. Also, bless Shinji. Yuzu is adorable too. Is it bad that I want for Kiichi & Anzu, Shinji & Yuzu to be together? *sigh* I shouldn't be hoping that. I doubt that'd happen.

I just found out there's going to be a live action adaptation coming out sometime this year. I might be watching it.
