Explore history without the confines of time or distance. Dr. Isabel Soto is an archaeologist and world explorer with the skills to go wherever and whenever she needs to research history, solve a mystery, or rescue colleagues in trouble. Readers join Izzy on her journeys and gain knowledge about historical places, eras, and cultures on the way.
The children’s comic Exploring Titanic: An Isabel Soto History Adventure is rather bland and unimaginative. At the request of her friend, museum curator Dr. Tom Baker, archaeologist and time traveler Isabel Soto travels back to 1912 to get information about the Titanic tragedy that will help Baker set up his Titanic exhibit. Unfortunately there’s no real story here, it’s just a series of information dumps about the Titanic and its sinking from various characters that Soto encounters. At no point does she struggle with not being able to save people from the coming tragedy, and her complete lack of knowledge about Titanic kind of shows her to be a poor historian (especially given that she claims to know the Titanic story before embarking on her mission). Yet storytelling issues aside, the book does a fair job at educating the reader and provides a number of interesting facts and pieces of trivia. And Isabel Soto is a positive role model, particularly for young girls. Despite its lack of an engaging plot, Exploring Titanic: An Isabel Soto History Adventure is an educational comic that helps bring history to life for young readers.
I've discovered several of the Isabel Soto adventures at our local library and I've borrowed all that I can find. The stories are fun and the narrative is informative without being overly didactic.
This book discusses the events leading up to, during and after the devastating sinking of the Titanic. The narrative is pretty straightforward and the illustrations really help to tell the story.
The graphic novel format is entertaining and I love that Isabel is active, daring, and smart. The books are quick reads and the illustrations really help tell the story.
Our girls have enjoyed reading these stories as well and I will look for more of them at our local library.
