Hit by a bus, Gavin Jago's beloved wife makes one last promise before she dies in his arms. Somehow, some way, she will come back to him. He is grief stricken...and believing in ghosts, he hopes she will return.Time passes and he's given up until an unexpected visitor arrives at his door.
Jackson Avery is a big, tall, handsome, but very aggressive guy. He insists he is Chrissie and she--he--wants Gavin back. But Gavin isn't gay and not at all attracted at all to Jackson. It's never, ever gonna happen...or will true love really be able to conquer all?
A.J. Llewellyn lives in California, but dreams of living in Hawaii. Frequent trips to all the islands, bags of Kona coffee in the fridge and a healthy collection of Hawaiian records keep this writer refueled.
A.J’s passion for the islands led to writing a play about the last ruling monarch of Hawaii, Queen Lili’uokalani as well as a non-erotic novel about the overthrow of her kingdom written in diary form from her maid’s point of view.
A.J. never lacks inspiritation for male/male erotic romances and on the rare occasion this happens, pursues other passions such as collecting books on Hawaiiana, surfing and spending time with friends and animal companions.
A.J. Llewellyn believes that love is a song best sung out loud.
This is such a brilliant story! Anyone woud say that the idea of coming back from death is strange enough. Then add the fact that a woman is coming back in a man's body - and surely you're in the realm of either the paranormal or fantasy. Right?
Wrong! These two authors prove that, once you accept the premise that this is possible, the story can develop like any other contemporary tale. Well, almost any other, because this is much better.
The relationship between Gavin and Chrissie (who returns as the very sexy Jackson) actually grows. Despite, or maybe because, she is now a man they suddenly discover that their love deepens. And not just because the sex is better but because Chrissie/Jackson can relate to Gavin as a man.
This is a well written, highly entertaining and very funny book that I enjoyed reading and recommend to any lover of m/m romance.
Amazing story, good writing: the dialogues are so funny. And i love the characters. I like Llewellyn with Manly a lot but with Hecht there is competition...
Jackson (Chrissie) to Gavin: "No wonder men go gay. Having a cock is like having a picnic with nothing but pastries and candies."
Is there something they are hiding from us, do i need to start a revolution? lol
The premise of this book is so different and that's why I like it so much. Gavin and Chrissie promised to love each other forever. Chrissie is killed in a car accident. But, a promise is a promise so she finds a way to come back to Gavin in a man's body. Jackson (aka Chrissie) must somehow convince Gavin it's really her...umm, I mean him. It's hard enough for Gavin to believe the dead can return but he must also ask himself if his love for Chrissie can endure her sudden "sex change". Let there be no mistake, this is m/m love story/romance. The author does an incredible job of melding and morphing the two personalities (Chrissie's which is very strong and Jackson's which is a bit more of an essence) into someone a little different from them both. One would think given the subject matter this book is very sad and dark but it's a lot of fun! There were many times I laughed out loud. This was a fun and sexy read I greatly recommend.
Oh bliss! I'm so happy that Serena picked this book for me to read; it's been one of those books that I've wanted to read for a long, long time, but just never made the time for. Now, after having read Tall, Mean & Darkly, I'm chomping at the bit to read the second in the series - Taller, Meaner, Darker. A.J. Llewellyn and Stephani Hecht wrote a sweet, funny-as-all-get-out, romantic and very, very sexy story that is definitely on my to be read again list.
I loved the paranormal element and, for me, it easily transformed into believable. And although it was at time serious, at other times it was laugh-out-loud, bust-a-gut funny. Llwellyn and Hecht did an fantastic job with the characters - and not just Gavin and Chrissie / Jackson; there are a number of secondary characters that shone.
I have every intention of enjoying the wild ride that we're taken on with Tall, Mean & Darkly. Wahoo!
I think I missed the bus on this one. While the book is readable and the idea for the plot is unique, I just couldn't find enough to hold my interest. It seems that there was very little effort made in developing this plot into a good book. And that's a shame because Ms. Hecht is one of my favorite writers. I give Tall, Mean & Darkly two and a half stars, but out of respect for Ms. Hecht I'll bump it up to three stars.
The notion of love conquering death is a nice one. I think everyone would love for it to be true.
I loved Gavin. He was so sweet not only to his wife while she was living, but to his elderly neighbor and the sweet Mama Kitty. Jackson was a bit too much to stomach. He was a self centered bitch.
Not quite what I expected. With a book where the MC's wife comes back from the dead as a man, I figured there would be a certain level of seriousness while he came to terms with his wife's new body. There was a little bit of hesitation but not much. The wife (Chrissie) comes back as Jackson and is quite aggressive. Gavin who's been grieving for his wife is blindsided and doubtful. He sees elements of Chrissie's personality but Jackson is a man and he's not sure whether he's going crazy. Gavin's life is an explosion of chaos from all directions and while the story had some funny and campy moments, it was all just a bit over the top.
I am writing this review after reading it for the second time. I loved it the first time. But reading it the second time was even more awesome. This book wasn't the normal m/m romance. You get to see the changes that happen after someone looses their soul mate. The pain and the misery that one goes through.
Thank goodness this isn't a stero-typical where someone instantly falls in love the moment they see true love. You see the normal pull of yes I want them, no I am not sure and uhhhh what do I do......
You will remember the funny moments for this book. I am sorry but who will forget about monkey sex talk? Come on.... And you get to imagine my surprise about the pancake and bacon foreplay.
I would love to recommend this to everyone. This book would be a good introduction into the m/m genre. This book can be opened and read in one sitting. There is no way someone could start this and put it down at any point of the book.
I am so excited that I get to read AJ's second book. And I am crossing my fingers that it will be as entertaining and worthwhile as this book. I know this is going to be on my recommend list.
This is an interesting take on the theme of 'True Love Can Overcome Death' ... the twist being that she comes back as a he. Although a little dark at times, this book is a fun romp but I did find Jackson's character a smidge annoying ... I probably wouldn't have liked him in his preincarnation as Chrissie either. I vacillated between a rating of 3 & 4 stars but in the end, decided that it deserved 4 stars even though I didn't like Jackson/Chrissie ... I have purchased the sequel, Taller, Meaner, Darker, but I don't want to read it if Jackson breaks Gavin's heart ... feel free to warn me if Jackson becomes more of an arsehat in the sequel & I'll give it a miss.
I was fortunate enough to get a copy of this book from the author even if it is no longer available. This was a lovely story about a man who looses his wife in a car crash.. With her last breath she promises to return to him and like miracle she does but as a he!! I loved the fact that even with some paranormal stuff this was almost all contemporary story :)
Didn't think I would like this one, but I did. I don't generally read the "gay-for-you" type, but here, the authors don't rub that element in the reader's face or offend me a gay reader. It was comical (in a dry way) and I found it a light, easy read.
