I didn't grow up in Brooklyn but I grew up in the years covered by this book. It brought back memories, reminded me how incredibly society has changed, and made me wonder whether children growing up these days will have the colorful and touching memories of the neighborhoods where they spent their childhood. I doubt it very much. I love the format, that of letting people who lived there tell their own stories

Get a room full of older people together, many of whom know each other, and get them talking about growing up in Brooklyn and you will have an idea of this book. Lots of little quotes from a wide range of authors arranged nicely to give a full flavor of a specific time and place. Entertaining reading and lots of fun little details. Gave me a nice idea of what my parents grew up with.
