About the author

The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Qu'on le pende!
Besonders schwer ist das Richterleben im Wilden Westen wohl nicht - ein paar Brocken Vulgärlatein, kein Gewissen und als Strafe entweder Konfiszierung allen Bargelds oder eben Aufhängen: Alles andere würde auch dem Ruf als harter Hund, vor dem man Respekt haben sollte, schaden. Roy Bean als historische Persönlichkeit, der sich selbst "Gesetz westlich des Pecos" nannte, hatte es aber sogar leichter, denn schließlich musste er sich nicht mit Lucky Luke rumärgern, der den unterdrückten Dorfbewohnern in Langtry helfen will, sich vom strengen Joch des selbsternannten, korrupten Friedensrichters zu lösen.

Ich hatte zwischendurch den Eindruck, dass die Episodenhaftigkeit etwas nachlässt, doch in diesem Band schlägt sie wieder voll durch - man könnte das auch als 30 Einseiter publizieren, es gibt keinen wirklichen Storybogen. Irgendwie läuft das bei Lucky Luke in den letzten 10 Bänden immer nach dem gleichen Schema, nur der Name des Gegners wird ausgetauscht.

Trotzdem liest man die Abenteuer Lucky Lukes gern, wegen Morris' tollem, verschnörkelten Stil, und der Pseudo-Western-Atmosphäre, in der im Hintergrund immer das mechanische Klavier spielt und man den Pulver- und Zigarrendampf des Saloons beinahe riechen kann...

One of the most funny albums of the series!
Goscinny at his very best.
I've read it perhaps over 20 times.
If you don't like this story then I'm afraid you are not a Lucky Luke fan.

Spoiler, spoiler everywhere.

Sooo, what to say about this issue. First of all this is one of the early adventures, where his model isnt quiet at his final design. But he looks way better than his version in"the daltons cousins".

One of the many books based on a real life figure, this ones are usually allways quiet good.
One of the rare books where Lucky Luke actually works as a cowboy, thats also nice to see.
The art is ok, I like the very pale and washed out look of the realy outdated books, but I wouldnt want that for every issue.
Story, humor, and how reasonable, and internal consistent lucky luke acts is good.
Maybe even very good.
I just reasently Klondike, where he antagonized a mounty for no good reasons, and Outlaw where he acted like a meathead, so that aspect came to mind for me.

Las secuencias son excelentes solo para estudiarlas. En este episodio, Lucky Luke no disparó una bala pero siempre me gusta que el héroe busque alternativas a la violencia para resolver sus problemas. Esta es una de las historias más jóvenes del vaquero, así que muchos elementos por los que se le conoce, no están presentes. Pero se compensa contando un relato divertido.
