Hirschi, R. (1990). Spring. New York, NY: Cobblehill Books Thomas Mangelsen uses vivid and colorful pictures in this book to help students get a realistic idea of what the animal and plant life of Spring looks like from the blooming of flowers to the shedding of winter coats of different animals. Each picture is label with the name of the animal shown in the picture allowing the students to be informed about what they are looking at. Hirschi and Mangelsen create a great unison between text and pictures. Larger text makes an easy read for students at lower levels of reading. Spring would be beneficial for young elementary students learning about the different seasons of the year. The elaborate photos and factual information will truly give the students and idea of what it means when Spring begins. Using books for the other seasons would be a good way to allow students to compare and contrast all seasons and differentiate what it requires to create the conditions for each season.
My version is in Spanish. But it is a book that goes through all the stirrings of spring time. The wonderful lives of animals and plants that bloom forth in the wonder of spring. I think it is a good book to have in the class room for young students that are struggling to read English and need a break and a taste of their own language.
This book has lots of pictures of animals that appear in the spring. Most of them are not ones that I will get to see anytime soon, but I guess it's kind of neat to hear about marmots and ptarmigans, since nobody else knows what they are. There is also a picture of a moose and her baby, which gives me a chance to talk about Uncle Dave living in Canada with the moose too.
