A fascinating collection of thirty compelling stories about events that shaped the Tar Heel State, It Happened in North Carolina describes everything from one of the first incidences of American resistance against British rule to a courageous milestone in the civil rights movement.
This book is a series of short chapters, detailing various events over the course of North Carolina's history, many of which did, indeed, shape history.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned a number of things. Even if you aren't from the state of North Carolina, I think you would find it interesting and informative, because many of the events described have had far-reaching effects.
I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. I would have given it a four and a half if I could have. Lots of interesting tidbits that you may have never heard of before or even thought about. I will keep this book on my shelf!
I enjoy reading historical facts and trivia, especially about my home state and my adopted state of North Carolina. I enjoyed this book because it went beyond trivia and covered events thoroughly enough for me to have a good understanding of them, but not so thoroughly that the book was bogged down in dates and details. It is divided chronologically into short chapters, one chapter per event. This allowed me to pick up and read the book for a while, but quickly come to a good stopping point when I had to do something else. Believe it or not, it's a good choice for a beach read because of it's pace and the short chapters. It is full of interesting information without reading at all like a history text.
The events take place all over the state, not just in the large cities that typically get attention. The time range of the events begins in the 13th/14th centuries and ends with the filming of the Dawson's Creek television series. I like the range of topics, including exploration and settlement of NC, medical breakthroughs, pivotal civil rights events, sporting events, weather events, and more.
For the true trivia buff, the last chapter of the book is "NC Facts and Trivia." (For example, did you know that Putt-Putt golf was invented in Fayetteville?)
In short, an entertaining and fun way to learn your North Carolina history, especially if you did not go to school here.
