She was born into the home of a master of the Kanze school of Noh. In her childhood she liked to draw pictures of horses and things but had no special interest in manga. While enrolled in fashion college, she happened across Shogakukan's Rookie of the Year Contest and applied to raise money for the Sōen fashion contest. There she received an honorable mention, and debuted with "Sunspot Visitor" (Hidamari no hōmonsha) published in the April 1982 edition of Bessatsu Shōjo Comic (now Bestucomi).
Her works translated abroad include Mars and Eternal Sabbath. In 1988, she was awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo manga for Boyfriend. Currently her last manga series is Cesare which centers around the infamous Borgia family of the Italian Renaissance and Cesare Borgia himself.

I have one question: Where the devil was this when I was desperately looking for a decent novel on the Borgias years ago and finding only rubbish?!
In France, untranslated, that's where! Because the "wonderful" Anglo editorials tend to ignore masterpieces in other languages if they're not pop-culture mainstays (and even when they are), and leave it to the industrious Franco-Belgian publishers to pump out real beauties from their native creators as well as from Asian talents. That's why you have to look into their catalogues to find historical fiction in comics and graphic novel formats. I feel sorry for those who don't speak French, and am grateful that I kept my French workable enough to read without a problem.
Now, on to the novel. This tells the story of the most infamous Borgia of them all, but before you get ideas into your head, let me tell you that you've first to kick François Arnaud's hot Cesare out of your headcanon. Yes, I know that's one huge sacrifice to ask. But do yourself a favour and forget it for the sake of enjoying this rendition, yes?
Because this shows Cesare like you've not seen him before. This is not the power-hungry bastard who pines so soulfully for his sister Lucrezia and gets everyone killed because he wanna. Oh, I am sure he'll be a bit of a bastard ahead, that Lucrezia might possibly pop in and suspect that he'll get someone killed eventually, but . . . by the time that rolls in, you'll already be firmly on his side, and whatever Fuyumi Soryo throws at you won't be as atrocious as that Cesare from a certain show I might name, or as Kate Quinn and dozens of other writers have portrayed him.
This Cesare is a young man, likely in his late teens, and hitherto not yet touched by the poisonous politics of the Renaissance noble and papal courts. He's a carefree student at the Università della Sapienza in the Italian city of Pisa, a brilliant student albeit fond of skipping classes, and the leader of the Spanish associaction, a sort of fraternity/student welfare mix, where he meets our narrator, Angelo da Canossa.
He is the grandson of a stonemason whom Lorenzo de' Medici appreciates for his skills, so as reward he pays for the young man to study at the same university where his son Giovanni is too. Young Angelo is very naïve and clumsy, and too frank for his own good. This frankness and his ignorance of the factions and etiquette at the university leads him to unknowingly humiliate Giovanni de' Medici by contradicting his arguments in class debate and getting praise for it, and in order to teach him his place, de' Medici plays a dangerous prank on him from which Cesare saves him just in time. But poor Angelo's troubles don't end there, he keeps putting his foot in his mouth and offending the nobles out of ignorance and excess of sincerity, and that'll eventually result in forming a close friendship with Cesare and his right hand Michelotto, who are the only ones to bother to help and tutor him on the realities of student life and city politics.
I liked the dynamics between commoner boy and noble boy, how well their respective personalities fit together. Cesare is clever and ambitious, and he feels attracted to Angelo for his naïveté, that wide-eyed country boy innocence and faith that the son of a Borgia can never afford to possess but craves. Michelotto is loyal to the bitter end and provides Cesare with much needed companionship, but he's a worldly young man and not exactly pure-hearted, so Angelo is the perfect complement. At least for now, because it looks like Cesare is going to become his political tutor and open Angelo's eyes to the crude reality.
I'm definitely going to follow this graphic novel, it's quite worth the read! Oh, and did I mention the art is beautiful? It is, very high quality and with clear lines; and the artist does seem to have researched Renaissance cities and buildings well.

Begitu dibaca, jujur, agak serem~ soalnya minimnya ekspresi membuat para tokoh nampak seperti barisan patung lilin (≧▽≦) Maapkan akuu!! m(_ _)m
Tapi setelah lama-lama dibaca, rasanya jadi terbiasa... gambarnya keren banget, memang.
Cuma gambar yang saling lirik itu bikin fujo-goggle yang telah lama kugadaikan, mendadak kembali, serta bekerja secara terstruktur, sistematis, dan masif! Idiihh.., Cesare ngelirik Miguel, trus-trus~ Miguel juga ngelirik Cesare...cie~ciee~~ (≖ ͜ʖ≖)
...orz...~aku harus menenangkan diri dulu pas baca... *sampe ga fokus sama ceritanya*
Cerita : 5 bintang...tadinya aku sudah menyiapkan mental untuk cerita yang berat, tapi penceritaan di sini ternyata berjalan maju (dengan beberapa flashback yang rapi) dan berurutan.
Jadi sama sekali ga sulit mengikuti cerita yang melibatkan strategi perebutan kekuasaan, juga momen-momen ketika Cesare-dkk berfilsafat dan mempertanyakan arti kedudukan manusia dan posisinya sebagai pengikut Tuhan...
Karena memang sejarah membuktikan, banyak orang yang mengaku "pengikut Tuhan" tapi kelakuannya menunjukkan sebaliknya *guguk ngomong gini sambil ngaca*
Minimal, efek-samping-positip dari komik ini adalah bikin menilik diri sendiri (^///^ )> karena manusia itu bukan soal apa agamanya, tapi soal bagaimana kelakuannya...
Efek-samping-yang-ga-terlalu-positip...ya itu tadi... Ih, lirikannya Miguel~ (≖ ͜ʖ≖) mwahahaa~~

Peringatan : level subjektipitas : 1000%
Salah satu dari sedikit komik yang nggak ragu untuk saya baca berulang kali.
Jika sebuah komik mengangkat kisah sejarah, tentunya mau nggak mau -kalau kita tahu- kita pasti akan membandingkan cerita komik dengan fakta sejarah yang kita tahu. Mau tidak mau pula, jika terjadi sedikit perbedaan -ataupun mungkin banyak.. hahaha- maka kita pasti akan memperhatikan dan membuat penilaian terhadap komiknya tergantung dari sudut pandang kita apakah perbedaan itu masih bisa ditolerir atau tidak.
Tapi, untungnya, ketika saya pertama baca komik ini, saya belum pernah mengenal sejarah dan sepak terjang keluarga Borgia sebelumnya. Maka dari itu, ketika saya dilanda perasaan senang yang membahana ketika dulu selesai membaca volume satu ini, saya justru bersyukur atas ketidaktahuan saya. Saya memutuskan akan menikmati komik ini apa adanya saja. Walaupun mungkin bisa saja nanti ketika komik ini akan menjadi rujukan utama saya jika saya kebetulan membaca tulisan lain mengenai keluarga Borgia dan ternyata ada perbedaan dengan sejarah -yah, ngga termasuk tokoh fiksi sih- biarlah itu jadi kejutan yang menyenangkan buat saya. Karena buat saya, komik ini sudah splendid >/////<) Yah, selain itu, walaupun saya sudah sedikit membaca artikel mengenai Borgia karena penasaran, rasanya terlalu repot untuk mengecek faktanya.. Hahaha
Gambarnya.Ikut-ikutan Fina Asdfghjkl..... Indah banget. Pake dua puluh tanda seru. Jenis yang saya sangat suka. Oke, tokoh-tokoh tamvan memang bertebaran hahahaha, isu utamanya nggak cuma itu. Gambar manusianya di mata saya hampir mirip Akemi Yoshimura-sensei, tapi punya Souryo-sensei lebih proporsional. Garis-garisnya bersih dan lagipula detil bangunannya itu *gyaaaah* cobbled street-nya, lengkungan bangunan, lalu cahaya dan bayangannya, pemandangan di bukit dan padang rumput sekitar Pisa... Indah *puppy eyes*
Kostumnya juga penuh dengan detil. Terutama kostum pelajar Spanyol. Perbedaan pelajar Spanyol dengan pelajar Fiorentina dan Perancis terlihat menyolok sekali. Satu lagi, kuda. Asdfgjkl... Yang bikin saya lumayan senyum-senyum adalah -entah sengaja ato enggak- postur kuda andalusia yang dipakai Cesare dan pelajar Spanyol, serta kuda destrier yang dipakai pelajar Perancis itu sebelas duabelas dengan postur badan masing-masing tuannya. Haha. Andalusia ramping dan lincah, sementara destrier kekar dan berat. Saya jadi merasa kostum dan kuda tunggangan jadi hal yang menguatkan kesan Cesare sebagai sosok yang penuh daya dan progresif di jamannya -di komik ini-
Sungguh saya kagum akan ketahanan mental Souryo-sensei dan asistennya dalam menyelesaikan gambar-gambar di komik ini belum lagi gambar berwarna di halaman depan *pingsan*
Cerita. Berjalan di tempo yang juga saya suka -menurut saya-perlahan tapi pasti. Perkembangan Cesare sangat menjanjikan karena di volume awal ini, bahkan ketika masih sebagai pelajar pun sudah diberikan petunjuk kalau Cesare sangat cerdas dan punya pemikiran yang visioner dan progresif dibandingkan pelajar lainnya. Dengan tanggung jawab besar untuk membantu 'ayah' nya menjadi Paus, saya sangat ingin tahu masa depan seperti apa yang akan dipilih Cesare. Apakah ia akan rela berada di bawah bayang-bayang ayahnya atau ia akan membebaskan dirinya dari hal itu.
Selebihnya, intrik dalam perebutan kursi Paus menjadi daya tarik utama bagi saya. Entah apakah nanti akan ada peperangan atau tidak, tapi strategi masing-masing pihak untuk menjegal lawannya dan atau berusaha untuk merebut dukungan serta hubungan masing-masing keluarga yang saling tumpang tindih juga sangat menarik. Di beberapa bagian di volume-volume selanjutnya saya memang harus berhenti sejenak untuk mencerna masalahnya -ini lebih karena saya yang agak lambat nangkepnya- tapi justru itu yang bikin menarik. Secara keseluruhan, ceritanya sesungguhnya mudah untuk dimengerti Kalau dibandingkan dengan Ravages of Time, oalah, RoT bikin lipatan otak jadi lebih keriting >.<
Karakter-karakter. Oh, cowok-cowok tamvan itu... Oops. Ok. Ok. *move on*
Angelo. Seperti yang dibilang Miguel, entah dia revolusioner atau terlalu lugu. Tapi di volume2 awal menurut saya, terlalu lugu. Karena hidupnya nyaman dengan sedikit tekanan, lingkungannya juga baik dan biasa sehingga jauh dari keruwetan dunia. Sebetulnya perkembangan Angelo juga bakal menarik, karena sejak berada di bawah pengampuan Cesare, Angelo sedikit demi sedikit mulai terseret ke dalam perputaran arus yang dibuat oleh Cesare. Tipe pekerja operasional dengan hati yang baik dan penuh pengabdian kepada orang yang telah memikat hatinya, entah sampai mana Angelo akan mengikuti Cesare dan entah sampai mana Cesare akan memanfaatkannya atau justru akan menyayanginya. Karakter Angelo yang amat bertolak belakang dengan Cesare buat saya memperkuat kesan terhadap Cesare. Bedanya jauh banget. Nget.
Cesare. Ah. Kalau yang ini sih bikin kasihan sebenarnya. Kayak puncak gunung es. Di atas terang bercahaya, di bawah entahlah seberapa gelap dan dalamnya. Saya sangat penasaran arus seperti apa yang akan dia buat dan berapa jauh serta berapa banyak orang yang akan dia seret ke dalamnya. Keliatan sekali klo saya ngga terlalu memfavoritkan dia, kan? Bahaha
Miguel. *gyaaaaaah* *calm* *gyaaaaaah* *diem*
Ehm. Ehm. Yang paling saya suka. Saya paling ngga pengen Miguel kenapa-napa nantinya. Bahahaha. Tapi sepertinya itu ngga mungkin. Walaupun Miguel berutang budi pada keluarga Borgia, tapi sesungguhnya ia mampu untuk mengambil jarak lalu menilai keadaan dan orang-orang di sekelilingnya secara mandiri.
Di mata saya, Miguel seperti menjejakkan kakinya di dua sisi semenjak dia bertemu Angelo. Di satu pihak ia tahu ia tidak akan meninggalkan Cesare yang mana akan membawanya ke manapun Cesare akan berakhir. Di pihak lain, pengetahuannya akan sifat Cesare membuatnya tidak bisa membiarkan Angelo mendekat ke kubu Cesare. Tapi bagaimanapun, daya tarik Cesare terlalu besar dan lagipula ia sudah memperingatkan Angelo. Entahlah apakah nanti Miguel akan tetap 'menjaga' Angelo atau tidak. Tapi, yah, dalam hal ini posisi Miguel sama seperti Angelo. Daya tarik visi Cesare adalah racun yang mematikan.
Yang menarik dari hubungan Miguel dan Cesare adalah keseimbangan yang terbentuk akibat kebersamaan selama bertahun-tahun. Saya pikir akan sangat sulit untuk berteman sekaligus menjadi bawahan dari orang sekompleks Cesare. Suatu saat mereka bisa jadi seperti saudara dengan perasaan brotherhood yang terlihat jelas sekali, tapi di lain kesempatan Miguel menjalankan tugasnya sebagai 'ajudan' Cesare. Gimana caranya coba bisa menempatkan diri di waktu dan posisi yang tepat? Susah sekali kayaknya. Dan dari Miguel lah pembaca bisa mengetahui sisi kelam Cesare. Saya senang sekali Souryo-sensei memberi porsi yang yang agak banyak bagi kemunculan Miguel -seperti halnya Angelo, karena melaluinya saya bisa mendapat sudut pandang lain cerita ini. Plis, tolong, jangan biarkan Miguel knapa-napa

Sebetulnya perkembangan Angelo juga bakal menarik, karena sejak berada di bawah pengampuan Cesare, Angelo sedikit demi sedikit mulai terseret ke dalam perputaran arus yang dibuat oleh Cesare. Tipe pekerja operasional dengan hati yang baik dan penuh pengabdian kepada orang yang telah memikat hatinya, entah sampai mana Angelo akan mengikuti Cesare dan entah sampai mana Cesare akan memanfaatkannya atau justru akan menyayanginya. Karakter Angelo yang amat bertolak belakang dengan Cesare buat saya memperkuat kesan terhadap Cesare. Bedanya jauh banget. Nget.
Cesare. Ah. Kalau yang ini sih bikin kasihan sebenarnya. Kayak puncak gunung es. Di atas terang bercahaya, di bawah entahlah seberapa gelap dan dalamnya. Saya sangat penasaran arus seperti apa yang akan dia buat dan berapa jauh serta berapa banyak orang yang akan dia seret ke dalamnya.
Miguel. *gyaaaaaah* *calm* *gyaaaaaah* *diem*
Ehm. Ehm. Yang paling saya suka. Saya paling ngga pengen Miguel kenapa-napa nantinya. Bahahaha. Tapi sepertinya itu ngga mungkin. Walaupun Miguel berutang budi pada keluarga Borgia, tapi sesungguhnya ia mampu untuk mengambil jarak lalu menilai keadaan dan orang-orang di sekelilingnya secara mandiri.
Di mata saya, Miguel seperti menjejakkan kakinya di dua sisi semenjak dia bertemu Angelo. Di satu pihak ia tahu ia tidak akan meninggalkan Cesare yang mana akan membawanya ke manapun Cesare akan berakhir. Di pihak lain, pengetahuannya akan sifat Cesare membuatnya tidak bisa membiarkan Angelo mendekat ke kubu Cesare. Tapi bagaimanapun, daya tarik Cesare terlalu besar dan lagipula ia sudah memperingatkan Angelo. Entahlah apakah nanti Miguel akan tetap 'menjaga' Angelo atau tidak. Tapi, yah, dalam hal ini posisi Miguel sama seperti Angelo. Daya tarik visi Cesare adalah racun yang mematikan.
Yang menarik dari hubungan Miguel dan Cesare adalah keseimbangan yang terbentuk akibat kebersamaan selama bertahun-tahun. Saya pikir akan sangat sulit untuk berteman sekaligus menjadi bawahan dari orang sekompleks Cesare. Suatu saat mereka bisa jadi seperti saudara dengan perasaan brotherhood yang terlihat jelas sekali, tapi di lain kesempatan Miguel menjalankan tugasnya sebagai 'ajudan' Cesare. Gimana caranya coba bisa menempatkan diri di waktu dan posisi yang tepat? Susah sekali kayaknya. Dan dari Miguel lah pembaca bisa mengetahui sisi kelam Cesare. Saya senang sekali Souryo-sensei memberi porsi yang yang agak banyak bagi kemunculan Miguel -seperti halnya Angelo, karena melaluinya saya bisa mendapat sudut pandang lain cerita ini.

Šita manga yra apie Čezarės Bordžijos jaunystę besimokant Pizos universitete. Jau keli metai ruošiausi pradėti skaityti šią seriją, bet taip ir nerasdavau laiko. Tad dabar nusprendžiau atsidėti ir perskaityti. Ir tikrai nenusivyliau. Jau nuo pirmos knygos užsimezgė intrigos. Be to susižavėjau koks gražus art. Ir Čezarė labai gražiai nupieštas. Micheletto irgi. Dabar skaitant laukiu nesulaukiu pamatyti jo seserį Lukreciją, tėvą Rodrigą, brolius Chuaną ir Džiofrį. Na, tikiuosi, kad jie pasivaidens knygoje. Tikrai man labai patiko pirmoji knyga apie mano meilę Čezarę.

I discovered this manga series at my local library and I am happy that I was alone there because I almost squealed when I saw it.
I don't really know why but I have always had a soft spot for the Borgia family, especially for Cesare so I am thrilled to have some material to read about him. Of course, I don't know how historically accurate the series is but it still very nice to read because it's packed with little pieces of information. Moreover, the illustrations are super nice and the story so far is interesting. I am excited to continue on with this series.

"È lo spiegone. Cioè, nelle serie televisive bisogna spiegare ciclicamente quello che è successo, la trama. Si fa soprattutto per i vecchi, Cristina."
Durante la lettura di questo primo volume del manga di Fuyumi Soryu questa citazione di Stanis LaRochelle ha continuato a passarmi per la testa a più riprese, perchè l'impressione che si ha del modo in cui l'autrice ci introduce ad aventi molto complessi della storia rinascimentale italiana è più quello di un enorme e continuo spiegone televisivo che quello di un'introduzione fatta con tutti i crismi.
L'artificio narrativo usato è usare come punto di vista quello di un giovane appartenente a una famiglia di artigiani di nome Angelo, giunto a Pisa da Firenze per iniziare gli studi di diritto. Qui farà la conoscenza del figlio del suo mecenate, Giovanni De' Medici, ma soprattutto di Cesare Borgia, un giovane intelligente e affascinante che eserciterà sul giovane un magnetismo irresistibile, il tutto sullo sfondo degli accadimenti storici del periodo.
Ora, qui sorge un problema di fondo... Per essere riuscito ad arrivare agli studi universitari pur non avendo nè i titoli nè i mezzi economici (con il supporto di un prestigoso mecenate) in teoria Angelo dovrebbe presentarsi a noi come un giovane di grande intelligenza, o perlomeno uno che ha capito come gira il mondo a lui contemporaneo visto che, fino a prova contraria, ci vive. Invece sembra uno sprovveduto privo di materia grigia che insulta a più riprese il figlio del suo mecenate (prima rivolgendosi a lui con poco rispetto mentre gli presenta i suoi omaggi e i suoi ringraziamenti), e poi contraddicendolo a lezione. Giovanni, invece di tirargli una coltellata nelle chiappe, fa in modo che uno dei giovani del gruppo studentesco fiorentino faccia ad Angelo continui e assurdi spiegoni: sul modo di rivolgersi ai nobili di stirpe, su quello che accade nella città (divisioni politiche e topografiche, contrasti personali, e compagnia danzante). Quindi mentre da un lato è logico che la Soryu tenga per mano un lettore che effettivamente non potrebbe saperne nulla di nulla del periodo storico spiegando tutto per filo e per segno, mi pare assurdo che per tenere per mano un lettore del XXI secolo debba far spiegare le cose a uno che lì ci vive, e anche se è appena arrivato in città forse qualche notizia gli è giunta.
A maggior ragione se è un giovane intelligente che è riuscito ad arrivare a studiare in Università, che non sia nemmeno un po' curioso del mondo che lo circonda e che debbano dirgli tutto gli altri mi suona decisamente forzato.
Comunque, superato il problema di Angelo, che spero di vedere poco nei volumi successivi perchè mi ha rotto le scatole a pagina 2, la Soryu ci dà prova della solita precisione che la contraddistingue, sia nella ricerca storica che nel tratto sempre molto pulito e ricco di particolari che nel complesso mi ha più che soddisfatta.

Questo fumetto é frutto della collaborazione dell'autrice, Fuyumi Soryo, con importanti esponenti del mondo accademico.
La cura dell'autrice per anche il minimo dettaglio l'ha portata ad investire (all'incirca) 10 anni di lavoro per la realizzazione di un solo biennio di vita del protagonista.
-Ma di che cosa parla?
Il portagonista della narrazione é Angelo da Canossa, un ragazzo, che grazie a Lorenzo De' Medici, riesce a frequentare il Palazzo della Sapienza, dove studiano anche Giovanni De' Medici e Cesare Borgia. Il giovane peró é ingenuo e inesperto (e l'autrice utilizza ció come espediente per introdurci alla narrazione e per spiegarci il contesto in cui ci muoviamo), cosa che lo porta spesso ad infilarsi in situazioni pericolose.
L'autrice riesce coniugare verosimiglianza storica e divertimento, non annoiando in questo modo il lettore meno avvezzo alla storia.

Bellissimo fumetto ambientato nell'Italia de nel tardo Rinascimento, quando ormai la gloria di Firenze, Roma e i grandi stati della penisola inizia a declinare in maniera irrimediabile a causa delle lotte intestine e la minaccia delle potenze straniere. Sono ripercorse le vicende politiche che ruotano attorno al giovane Cesare Borgia, dalla sua formazione universitaria a Pisa fino alle azioni che intraprende in giro per l'Italia per far eleggere suo padre papa.
Le vicende storiche sono ovviamente ripercorse in maniera romanzata ma allo stesso tempo molto accurata, le ambientazioni sono ricostruite con grande cura e dettaglio, è un piacere sfogliare le pagine dei vari volumi.
Prenderebbe 5 stelle se non avesse una vicenda editoriale così sofferta e travagliata (esce un volume ogni X anni con X estremamente variabile), non si capisce se l'autrice finirà o meno la serie, probabilmente resterà incompiuta. Peccato perché è un opera di grande valore.

Mai nella mia vita pensavo di provare così tanta stima per un' autrice di cui finora non avevo letto nulla.
È così per madame Fuyumi Soryo che ha magistralmente dedicato tempo e risorse per creare un manga seinen di ambientazione e soggetto storico eccezionali per qualità e realismo, anzi per veridicità.
È anche la prima volta che in un' opera di fumetto, che sia orientale o meno, trovo una bibliografia dettagliata che attesta il lavoro di ricerca svolto dalla mangaka.
Già Mari Yamazaki mi aveva catturato con le sue paginette informative ogni tot di capitoli di Thermae Romae, qua sono rimasto folgorato dal rigore accademico.
Arigatoo gozaimasu!
Poi Cesare Borgia è un personaggio intrigante sotto ogni profilo.
Spero che Cesare. Il creatore che ha distrutto - di cui continuerò la lettura fino alla fine - abbia la trasposizione multimediale che si merita!

(Review for the whole serie)
An interesting story about political intrigue and the nature of power, sadly muddled down a bit by the untouchable moral superiority of some of the characters. Still, seeing these people nagivate the complex landscape of the italian renaissance never fails to be entertaining.
The pages often breath a lot, and there's some really interesting use of overlap. An intriguing style that makes me want to read more of Fuyumi Soryo for sure.

Eccessivamente influenzato dalla prospettiva giapponese riguardo al carattere rinascimentale dell'individuo.
Anche piuttosto ingenuo o rielaborato secondo una visione puramente moderna – peccato per il bel tratto artistico.
Un protagonista simile, con tanta propensione all'autosvalutazione ed eccessiva modestia, sarebbe stato visto non bene, come accade in un'atmosfera che elogia il Wa, ma molto, molto male.
E, a dirla tutta, ha rotto le scatole anche a me.
Anche piuttosto ingenuo o rielaborato secondo una visione puramente moderna – peccato per il bel tratto artistico.

Going from reading Mars, Fuyumi Soryo's other series, its amazing to see how versatile she is in genres and art styles, as well as the atmosphere she is able to build. I am already invested in the characters and the plot and am eager to see how this unfolds.

Ceritanya tentang para calon penguasa kardinal yang sedang menempuh pendidikan kuno di Pisa. Tokoh kita adalah Angelo, mahasiswa yang masuk karena rekomendasi dari keluarga kerajaan Roma.

Très bonne découverte
Franchement, j'ai beaucoup aimé ce premier tome. J'aime le fait de pouvoir redécouvrir un peu l'histoire mais d'une manière différente. Le personnage d'Angelo est attachant malgré les erreurs qu'il peut commettre envers son excellence Giovanni. Lecture super rapide, je l'ai lu en 1 soirée. Je vais bien évidement poursuivre ma lecture.

Cesare est un drame historique qui raconte les années formatrices de César Borgia, personnage historique controversé, alors qu'il étudie à l'Université de Pise. Écrit sous la supervision de Motoaki Hara, un spécialiste de la Renaissance Italienne et tout particulièrement de Dante Alighieri, ce manga fait également un portrait assez précis et authentique de l'époque--en tout cas suffisamment pour être recommandé par le magazine français Historia (d'ailleurs peu de manga comportent une bibliographie exhaustive!). Le site de l'éditeur français, Ki-oon, offre un extrait d'une vingtaine de pages d'un volume ultérieur (le deuxième ou troisième) ainsi qu'une “bande-annonce” :
Étrangement, dans ce premier volume, Cesare ne semble avoir qu'un rôle secondaire. Ici, Fuyumi Soryo utilise le personnage fictif d'Angelo pour introduire tout l'arrière-plan historique et politique du récit, ainsi que l'ensemble de ses acteurs. Le véritable récit ne commencera donc qu'aux volumes suivants. Mais, même si ce premier volume n'est qu'une introduction, la narration est bien maitrisée et toute l'information nécessaire à la compréhension de l'histoire nous est présenté peu à peu, d'une manière fluide et intéressante. J'avoue toutefois que la naïveté excessive d'Angelo devient, à la longue, un peu agaçante.
L'aspect la plus remarquable de ce manga est sans aucun doute son incroyable qualité artistique. Le dessin est très détaillé et précis. On s'en rend compte dès la couverture. Si les expressions faciales sont parfois un peu répétitives, les traits des personnages sont clairs et agréables. L'auteur semble aussi bien aimer les chevaux car le manga présente plusieurs scènes équestres, qui sont exécuté avec beaucoup de naturel. Et le travail des arrières-plans, tant intérieurs qu'extérieurs, avec ses détails décoratifs et architecturaux, est vraiment excellent. Cesare est donc un manga historique d'un grand intérêt et j'espère bien pouvoir en poursuivre la lecture. Je vous le recommande également.

Cesare est donc un manga historique d'un grand intérêt et j'espère bien pouvoir en poursuivre la lecture. Je vous le recommande également.

Tre stelline per il semplice fatto che, a livello di narrativa, il primo volume della serie di fumetti che Fuyumi Soryo ha dedicato a Cesare Borgia è tutt'altro che perfetto. Nelle prime pagine in maniera particolare, abbonda exposition che fa suonare i dialoghi innaturali. Lo scopo del primo volume è sì quello di presentare le figure principali e le macchinazioni politiche dietro alla Pisa universitaria del 1491, ma la scelta che fa l'autrice è quella di ammassare quanto più possibile all'inizio, tramite lunghi spiegoni fatti, di volta in volta, all'inesperto Angelo da Canossa, da studenti più vissuti di lui. Il che rende il volume, in sostanza, una lunga presentazione di fatti e personaggi, in cui succede molto poco di realmente interessante.
In ogni caso, ogni singola tavola è bellissima e impeccabile (e lo dico da persona che non ama affatto lo stile grafico di manga e anime), e l'attenzione al dettaglio lodevole. Senza contare che Cesare Borgia, sia in versione studente universitario che nella versione duca di Valentinois, quella a tutti più famigliare, resta un personaggio di cui vale sempre la pena seguire le avventure.
