Early this century Enrico, a young intellectual, leaves the abundantly diverse Austro-Hungarian city of Gorizia with its mixed population and culture, to spend several years living on the Patagonian pampas, alone with his ancient Greek texts, his flocks and every now and then a woman. He has been taught by his closest friend, Carlo, a philosopher/poet who commits suicide i ...more

This little book is about what might have happened if one of Carlo Michelstaedter's friends had carried the youngster's philosophical ideas to fruition, without killing himself in the process. Enrico Mreule takes Michelstaedter's "persuasion" as far as he can, turning himself into something of a sage in the process. The book contains a rare European description of gaucho life in Argentina, along with glimpses Trieste and Istria. It is hard to get a sense of the author's true fascination with and ...more

A short but very intense novel that is about what happens when an individual takes a philosophy of renunciation to heart and then to its logical extreme. Enrico is a young intellectual who decides to follow the path of solitude and non-attachment. He travels to Patagonia seeking an authentic life on the pampas, free from distractions, from worries, filled only with immediate sensations, including the rigours of the weather. Later he returns to find Europe on the threshold of turmoil. He is surro ...more

L'ope

Raamatut peategelast Enricot kannab ikka aina surma poole kustumatu armastus enesetapu sooritanud noorepõlvesõbra Carlo vastu.

Tr. M. R. Sparr. 3.5 stars. I am going to take a guess that this is the kind of book that could mean very different things depending on the mood that you are in when you read it in. Like Magris’s ‘travel’ books it is beautifully written and wonderfully descriptive of all of the places that Enrico makes his way through. I did find the beginning fairly difficult to get through as we are introduced to him and his ‘student philosopher’ friends debating the meaning of life and concluding (I think) th ...more

...more

Itaalia nüüdiskirjaniku raamatu peategelane on reaalselt olemas olnud isik Enrico Mreule (1886-1959).

Claudio Magris was born in Trieste in the year 1939. He graduated from the University of Turin, where he studied German studies, and has been a professor of modern German literature at the University of Trieste since 1978.

His most well knwon book is Danubio (1986), which is a magnum opus. In this book Magris tracks the course of the Danube from its sources to the sea. The whole trip evolves into
