His mission takes him to the jungle in search of a legendary jungle vampire. But the evil Baron Marackai is hot on his trail. My son is enchanted by this book series and was delighted to read this latest in the series. "An Awfully Beastly Business, THE JUNGLE VAMPIRE" is perfect for the 8-10 year old. As a parent I have to recommend any book that engages a child's mind and helps them to discover the love of reading. The following is his review:
The book The Jungle Vampire is a story about a werewolf named Ulf who tried to help a vampire stay alive. Professor Farraway's evil son, Baron Macaria Farraway, wants to destroy all monsters. Ulf and his fairy friend, Tiana, are both in training to be agents for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts (RSPCB.) The story was exciting to see who would succeed and the writing made me feel as if I was right in the book! It took me less than 4 days to finish. I recommend this to all monster loving readers!
Yaaass ok idk what happened with the previous two but this one was amazing, i love how the creatures are based on irl ones so the science and physiology feels real and like it could exist in this world 💗💗💗 Also the character development! Fielding wanted to take ulf with her instead of keep him in wildlife sanctuary, granted she's still protective but really she should be since he's still a kid when not a werewolf also that ending, iiiihhh i'm excited for the next one i'm glad i stuck with it
Book four of the series sees another fantasy plot device used as the series seems to be mining as many of them as they can in the six book run. This one the title tells us some of the details, the series continues to largely forgettable run.
Reason for Reading: My son loves this series and this was the next one out. I read it aloud to him.
Summary: All the members of the RSPCB are off to the jungle and this time Ulf is invited along as he is in training to become an official member and his mission takes him in search of a legendary vampire. Unbeknownst to all, Baron Marackai is after the same treasure only he wants to kill the fabled beast and he is following them to take advantage of their smarts on finding this creature's den.
Comments: Everything one has come to expect from this series is present in this latest addition. The authors keep the story fresh even though Baron Marackai is after Ulf and his friends in every book, Sinden, et al. find different ways of bringing the two parties together and we've come to enjoy waiting for that moment that the RSPCB finds out that Baron Marackai is behind their troubles. This particular book is an action packed story. Briefly starting at home they are off to the jungle very quickly, where they meet adventure after adventure. The whole team is included equally this time around with Ulf, Tiana, Orson and Dr. Fielding all sharing equal page time. Once the Baron reveals himself the pace is very quick and the exciting adventure turns into a wild race to the end. The only thing we missed was since the whole book took place away from Farraway Hall, our favourite character, Druce the gargoyle, only made a cameo appearance at the beginning and the end.
Lots of laughs were had by both of us and we are sad to have come to the last book in print to date. My son says he'd like to start from the beginning and read them all over again so maybe I'll pass them on Dad, for bedtime reading. After doing a bit of research I see book 5 "Battle of the Zombies" will be released in June of this year (2010) in the UK, so according to the schedule that's been established so far, I think we can expect it out here in North America in December. We will anxiously be waiting!
I needed a light read recently, so thought I'd try this Beastly Business series to see if Thomas would enjoy it. The only problem for me (and will be for him), is that this was Book 4, which I did not catch til I was part way in. I was wondering why I had so many questions about the characters, and that probably explains it.
A group of scientists/investigators/adventurers, whom are out to protect the beasts in the world from the evil hunters, are on a quest to find the elusive Jungle Vampire (yes, a beast, don't think Dracula here). The team is made up of a scientist, a giant, a fairy, and Ulf (not saying what he is other than a boy). They run across many unusual beasts in their quest, and ultimately find what they are seeking, but can they stay ahead of the hunter that has been tracking them?
Fun read, but wish I would have paid attention and started with #1...
Rhys still loves this series and insists on having at least one of his parents keep up as well. This was pretty good - I think they're improving. I wasn't fooled by the Baron Marakai disguise but it was much cleverer in this edition.
Book four now of this series as the plot moves along, there are some points that keep you going, but overall the whole series is not that memorable, and will be quickly forgotten in weeks and months to come.
