The 1943 born Northern Ireland native started writing children's books when he was a teacher in his thirties, with the aim of helping out students who had trouble reading. But he continued writing for a more-personal reason: "the act of imagining simply makes me feel good," he says. The fifty-seventh book of Sam McBratney's career, and his first book with Candlewick Press, was the much-loved GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU, which has sold an astonishing 15 million copies worldwide, and is available in 37 languages. "This is not the sort of thing you expect when most of your books have been remaindered," the author admits. "But, as the frog trapped in the milk discovered, if you keep going, sometimes you find yourself walking on cream cheese."

Where does Sam McBratney get his inspiration? "I told my children stories when they were young," he says, "so when I write I try to think of what they would have liked." But there may be another source guiding his writing as well. The author's father--who worked as a type compositor with the BELFAST TELEGRAPH, and whose favorite books were westerns--is the person Sam McBratney credits for giving him his love of the English language. "Most of my picture books--GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU, THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS, JUST ONE!, and JUST YOU AND ME--explore the relationship between a big one and a wee one," the author notes. "The big one is not called the father in the stories, but that's what he is. Although my dad died before I became a writer, the father in my stories has a voice and a presence that he would have recognized and understood."

In addition to authoring many books for children, Sam McBratney wrote radio plays for adults and a prize-winning collection of short stories. He received a degree in history and political science from Trinity College, Dublin, and worked for many years as a teacher.

The "Guess How Much I Love You" series was my ultimate childhood book series. It might sound silly, but I still enjoy Sam McBratney series. In every book there is something special buried behind the story. I enjoy how the story (Guess How Much I Love You All Year Round) is written: simple, but special. The book gives me a happy, unexplainable feeling. It also brings back special memories, like when my parents used to read Guess How Much I Love You to me and my brother.

Aw, this is such a sweet book and set of four stories all featuring Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare during the different seasons. This hardback is bigger than A4 in size, has a dust jacket, and is a little heavy with thick matt pages of some lovely illustrations and text. In Spring Little Nutbrown Hare is excited about all the creatures he sees moving around; in Summer Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare spot all the different and beautiful colours; In Autumn Little Nutbrown Hare finds a cardboard box and plays a trick on Big Nutbrown Hare; and in Winter the two play an I spy game.

This book is such a lovely treat with four stories featuring the two characters of Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare from the ‘Guess How Much I Love You’ book! Each of the four stories takes place during a different season of the year beginning with spring. I love how in this first story, Little NutBrown Hare is so excited about all the creatures he sees moving around like a caterpillar, and Big Nutbrown Hare explains how they will all turn into something else one day. Little Nutbrown Hare is fascinated by what they will change into and there’s a lovely last moment between the two of them at the end of the tale too. The summer story features the two of them picking a colour and then naming their favourite thing in that colour, and of course again there’s a lovely moment at the end where the two come together and it makes you smile so much reading it. The autumn story is a lot of fun with Little Nutbrown Hare finding a cardboard box that’s floated by with the wind and again it has a lovely and sweet ending and the final tale in winter also features a beautiful ending which makes you smile so much and want to cry happy tears! 🙂

Every tale is like its own short picture book and I love how sweet each tale is with the younger Hare exploring and being fascinated by the simplest of things, like so many children are. I love how the end of each story is so sweet and lovely and you see and really feel the love shared between these two lovely characters in the stories. The illustrations definitely add to the book’s appeal so much and I’m not sure if it would be such a beautiful book if it wasn’t for the amazing watercolour illustrations by Anita Jeram. I adore each of the illustrations showing both Little and Big Nutbrown Hare in various positions together. You can really feel Little Nutbrown Hare’s curiosity and playfulness as well as see the lovely expressions in both characters. I also love some of the different positions they end up in such as Big Nutbrown Hare holding Little Nutbron Hares hands or the lovely image of his very long ears in one picture. Overall it’s such a lovely book to have and keep and I’m sure many will cherish this beautiful set of four seasonal tales featuring the two lovely characters!

Guess How Much I Love You All Year Round is written by Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram. The genre of this book is contemporary realistic fiction. The book is intended for ages three through seven. This book won the Notable Children’s Book Award in 1996. This book is about two nutbrown hares that are father and son. They talk about how much they love each other in all four seasons of the year. I rated this book 4/5 stars because it is a great book but I would like to see the colors a little more vibrant. The colors are paler than in other children’s books. However, the book has great illustrations and teaches children about the love between a father and son or parent and child. This is a great book to read at nighttime as a bedtime book. This book has a great theme and plot. It also has the same two characters, Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare. This book appeals to young children because it talks about nature/the four seasons and the love their parents have for them. I recommend this book.

Ik hou het hele jaar van jou. Tekst: Sam McBratney. Tekeningen: Anita Jeram.

I LOVE YOU ALL YEAR ROUND takes the reader through each season and no matter how the environment changes around them, Big Hare will always love Litte Hare. In one book, we get four classic GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU stories, each featuring our favorite hares. The illustrations are soft and adorable with pastel coloring and I love how the brown hares always stand out from the environment.

In these stories, Little Hare and Big Hare do a variety of activities like I Spy, tag, and other season-specific games. With the parent-child interactions, this is a great story to share with children. It gave my daughter some ideas of games she wants to play with me which is the cutest thing. I also love how it teaches about the different seasons with a central focus on how much parents love their children. You can never say "I love you" too much and this story is a great way to express that.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to all younger children, especially fans of animals, because it is such a cute, sweet story for a parent to read to their child. Children need that reassurance sometimes and this story gives them that.

Aside from Peter Rabbit, the NutBrown Hares have my whole heart. Peter Rabbit wins because his outfit is cute and I'm old, so it sings to my nostalgic heart too!

I Love You All Year Round includes four stories from the Guess How Much I Love You series, classic stories you may already know, but now all in one place. I love the watercolour illustrations, and how special the NutBrown Hares are. I think this would work really well as a gift edition, rather than to purchase if you already have seasonal books in this series (to save repetition).

Browsing books to give my friends' children as gifts since I won't gift anything I haven't first read myself.

The nutbrown hares from Guess How Much I Love You return for some seasonal adventures and nothing could be more sweet. They explore seasons and colors and play I Spy. The art is soft and comforting, and over and over again, Big reminds Little of how very much he is loved. Just the perfect book for snuggling a little one onto your lap and reminding them how loved they are too!

Guess how much I love you, says Little Nutbrown Hare. Little Nutbrown Hare shows his daddy how much he loves him: as wide as he can reach and as far as he can hop. But Big Nutbrown Hare, who can reach farther and hop higher, loves him back just as much. Well then Little Nutbrown Hare loves him right up to the moon, but that's just halfway to Big Nutbrown Hare's love for him.

A story for each season involving Big and Little Hutbrown Hare. They have adventures and enjoy each other's company. The best part about this collection is Big Nutbrown Hare is the father, as opposed to the original Guess How Much I Love You story which involves a mother. A simple and loving collection for young children and their Bigs.

This book is precious! I adored it so much! It's so sweet and simple and lovely. Ahh! I liked the rhyming here and there and the illustrations were quite lovely. It fit well with the story and just added more cuteness to the book. I loved the little games the Hares would play in each season and always ending the season with a way of saying they love each other. Overall it was a story filled with love and it made me all warm and fuzzy on the inside. SO PRECIOUS!
