An artist of the spectacular. Each collection sparkles with pieces seen on book covers from around the world. Fantasy, science fiction, eroticism, etc... Royo has devised a special personal mix of media that makes his work so uncannily real, so beguilingly engaging as to make him a best-selling star.
Luis Royo (born 1954) is a Spanish artist, best known for his fantasy illustrations published in numerous art books, magazines, and various other media including book and music CD covers, video games and Tarot cards.
Beginning his career as a furniture designer, he was attracted to the comics industry in the late 1970s, and nine years later turned to art as a full time career. Within a few years, he was publishing art in many magazines as well as providing cover illustrations for a number of publishers.
The images take inspiration from fantasy and scifi themes with plenty of swords and guns to accompany the bulging muscles for the male characters and low cut clothing for the female ones. If you tell me that's armor, please allow me to laugh. Space ships, motorcycles and cars all look much cooler with hot women in the picture. I used 'cool' and 'hot' there - I'm such a poet.
Most of Royo's early works are commissions, usually covers for bad sci-fi and fantasy books, and the results are accordingly kitsch. Royo's talent still shows, though, and there are in fact several really good pieces in the collection.
The art is fine, but I don't much care for the poetic prose throughout the book. Still, it's something different than standard art books. Maybe all his art books are like this, and I just didn't know.
Men and women that literally hit you like a hammer with their mighty weapons. Set in Conan the Conqueror like countries full of beasts, enemies and unknown dangers. You don't have to read any text here. Looking at the pictures is enough to stimulate your wildest fantasies. Really recommended!
The name of the book is "Women" ironically, of all the artistic works made by master Royo, this is the one that contains the least female illustrations.
