A good message but personally the cloth-based illustrations aren’t up my alley and a spider is already a hard sell for me

All life size pictures of each of the things mentioned in this story. It is a little different than the finger play version; it is a little bit more wordy; I would call it the an extended version of the nursery rhythm.

Ideas 2/3 - I like the idea of elaborating on Itsy's story so the poor spider comes up with an innovative solution to the water spout problem.
Organization 2/3 - The book starts with the original poem, tells Itsy's story, then ends with a modified version of the poem. Itsy's story follows a mostly logical sequence, except for the erratic weather and the fact that someone seems to have pinned up their clothes to dry on a rainy day.
Word Choice 3/3 - The author uses interesting words that expand children's vocabulary.
Voice 3/3 - Itsy is a lovable character who shows both perseverance and ingenuity. By the end of the book, I am rooting for a spider - which is really an accomplishment.
Sentence fluency 2/3 - There is both rhythm and variety in the choice of sentences.
Conventions 3/3 - The author uses appropriate capitals and periods, including advanced punctuation.
Presentation +1 - The texture on the front of the book is interesting and inviting for young children, and the quilt-like quality of the pictures inside add a nice touch to the story.

This wonderfully written and illustrated picture book is intended for toddlers and kindergartners. It is the story of Itsy, a spider, who spends the day trying to get back home to his web by climbing the water spout. He encounters a few problems along the way, but eventually makes it home. I gave this book five stars because it is a fun, extended spin on the original story of the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Everyone knows the song and hand motions that accompany it so to have a book based off of it makes the story more engaging. I especially enjoyed the illustrations, they are large and colorful, stitched creations that keep the reader's attention. The book is written poetically with fun rhymes and a twist in the plot. I definitely recommend this book to anyone with a little one at home who loves to sing the itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout.

This book is great for babies and toddlers to hear. The itsy bitsy spider has a rhyming text and the illustrations are engaging. Throughout the story, the spider climbs out the sprout and his techniques for climbing and it includes a solution at the end of the song. Which is the spider reaching his web.
The illustrations are colorful and are entertaining. I enjoyed reading this book it shows that the spier had many ways of getting up the water sprout and how he tries again without giving up. It teaches children how to problem solve.

This story retold the classic nursery rhyme of itsy bitsy spider. Throughout the story it gave very vivid picture and thoroughly explained the spider's story. This book is perfect for infants as they learn speaking and listening skills while the reader is telling or singing the story. Also it is a board book so infants and toddlers can begin to develop touch skills. This books various cognitive growths for infants and toddlers.

Author Kate Toms has discovered why he kept climbing that infernal waterspout and how he finally made it to the top.
Written for infants and older children, the classic song of Itsy Bitsy Spider and his continual climb up the waterspout, is given additional verses by author Kate Toms. Throughout the story it's explained why the spider climbs the spout (he has built his web high so he can see what's going on in the world), his many techniques for climbing (swim goggles and an umbrella), and his eventual solution for reaching his web despite the rain (and it's NOT a trampoline).
This review also includes links to preschool lesson ideas for extending the learning of this book.

Summary: It has a thick durable cover that is soft and inviting for toddlers to turn. It is loosely based on the classic nursery rhyme because the spider does not stop once up the spout. The spider finds himself up a tree and even spins a web.
Review: The pictures are shimmery and colorful. I actually read this book often and I enjoy it every time. My copy has been through 3 children and it is still in tact so I think it is very well made.
Possible uses: This book could be used in class for a nursery rhyme lesson and/or fine and gross motor activities.

The first thing, I would not classify this as a board book. There is nothing about this book that is similiar. It's a full size picture book with amazing hand sewn illustrations that will entertain youngsters for a long time. Following the well known song, the author does a great job of showing how the spider tries varies ways of getting up the water spout. The book is a great one for storytimes and will be a big hit in your youth picture book collection.

I loved how Kate Toms took a classic song and turns it into a story with a teaching moral. The Itsy Bitsy Spider here does not give up when he's washed out; instead he try's in many ways to make it up the spout until he succeeds. I like how it teaches children to problem solve as well as to not just give up. Great story, written in a semi-rhyming style. I would recommend this book for preschool and up.

With a creative and inspiring take on the beloved children's song, this book is surely a classic. Beautifully textured illustrations, a bouncy cadence with easy rhymes, and a delightfully silly story, Itsy quickly captivates young readers and inspires them to think creatively to solve their problems. This is one book I don't mind reading ten times an hour- and I can't think of a better recommendation than that!

F (2) has become obsessed with this book over the past couple of weeks. (To be honest, I'm not entirely sure that this is the exact version she has, hers was a hand-me-down L once got in a Chick-fil-A kids' meal.) She loves when her dad or I sing this book to her and she always chimes in on a few words. She wants it "again! again!" It's very cute.
