Pennsylvania is home to many classic amusement parks, several of which began operating as early as the late nineteenth century. Some of these parks maintain rides and amusements from their early years, preserving an atmosphere of nostalgia. Others have evolved with new trends in the industry, adding high-tech rides and water parks. This book begins with a concise history of the amusement park, then surveys the industry in Pennsylvania. A comprehensive guide to 13 parks in the state and a selection of smaller ones, complete with information on rides and attractions, follows. Packed with vintage postcard images and photos.
Amazing history of Pennsylvania amusement parks. Even though the book stops at 2002 and some of the parks mentioned are gone, Futtell has compiled a wonderful history of the parks. Anyone that loves PA parks will love this book!
Pretty interesting, if a little outdated. At least one of the parks in this book is now defunct, and nearly all of the others have changed significantly since this book was written in the early 2000s.
That said, most of the parks also date back to the 1800s, so there's a lot of fascinating history to cover. You can tell that the author is passionate about this topic, and I feel that he writes in a way that is accessible to amusement park newbies (like me) without coming off as condescending. There were a few sections I think could've been made more concise, but overall this was a fun random library book to read.
