A is for Amber #6

Orange You Glad It's Halloween, Amber Brown?

Rate this book
Amber Brown has come up with a fantastic costume, but it's a secret.  She won't even tell Justin, no matter what he bribes her with. But one thing worries Amber all day.  Her parents had a fight before school.  What if they don't make up before their traditional Halloween dinner (macaroni and cheese, carrots, and orange juice)?  What if they are in bad moods during trick-or-treating?  Halloween is one of Amber's favorite holidays, and of course this one turns out to be as wonderful as all the rest.

Neo chose to read this, as we prepare for the Hallowe’en season! Amber Brown is back for another interesting adventure, this time around Hallowe’en. While getting ready for school, Amber and her best friend, Justin, are planning for a party and the big event this evening. They will go trick-or-treating, though Amber refuses to tell anyone her costume. Throughout the day at school, Amber struggles to get through the day, but learns a few jokes along the way. By the evening, the anticipation is too much, but she will have to wait until she finishes her dinner. Then, the wait is over... Amber Brown reveals her costume. Neo loved this story, as it was easy to read and talked all about Hallowe’en. He has some new jokes to tell at school and will be able to dazzle his friends with his unique costume idea. Great for the season and perfect for a newer reader!

Fun Halloween story featuring Amber Brown and her friends. We've been reading a lot of books in this series, but unfortunately mostly out of order. We went back in time for this story, enjoying seeing her with her best friend Justin (before he moves away) and seeing some of the strife between her parents (before they get divorced). This is a fun tale and we really liked the concept of getting "ghosted," where you bring a little anonymous Halloween cheer to two of your neighbors and encourage them to pass it on.

In this book, it is Halloween time for Amber Brown. Amber spends her day doing multiple pumpkin-themed activities. All the activities lead to Amber trick-or-treating later that night. Amber dresses up as an eye so she can be punny as eye Amber Brown, similar to her catchphrase of I, Amber Brown. This book is the perfect sweet little story for children to read during the spooky season.

As Amber Brown prepares for Halloween night, her excitement is dampened by worries that her parents’ arguing will ruin the evening’s fun. Danziger is again right on target in her characterization of 2nd grader Amber, and she keeps the tone playful even with the serious subplot of parental disharmony. Tony Ross’ lively watercolor illustrations reveal Amber’s varying moods throughout the day. Readers almost ready for chapter books will enjoy watching Amber and her friend Justin celebrate Halloween.

I read this book with my whiz kid and thought it was great. Kids can relate to this character because she talks about her parents fighting and how that upsets her. Plus, the story was just fun and realistic.

I would use this book in my classroom to talk about halloween in my classroom. I can use it to talk about how sometimes parents fight and how it makes the students feel and what we can do to make ourselves feel better in those situations.

The author decides to make Halloween scary by hinting that Amber Brown's parents might get a divorce. As soon as the "D" word is read, the kids suck in their breaths. The book truly becomes scary to them.

ISD students decided they wanted to read this book.
One read, and it hooked them.

Mommy says: Great story and voice for 2nd grade readers, but also includes some really great information about the solar system and the current controversy over whether Pluto is a planet or not.
