I am a huge Rien Poortvliet fan and this book was no exception. I've been collecting his books for a while but like many of his books - they are out of print and a bit difficult to find in my price range.
Luckily, I was able to snap this one up for my collection.
This gorgeously illustrated book not only the animals but also the farm tools and the rural life of farmers more than 50 years ago.
The images in this wonderful book are so realistic and capture the personalities of the animals so perfectly - my favorite section was about the cows, though the chicken bit was super cute too.
The little notes and anecdotes give such lovely insights regarding what it is like to live on a rural Dutch farms. I was surprisingly fascinated to learn about the tools and the farming traditions.
A quick warning to the parents though: While this book definitely looks like a lovely child-friendly book from the 1970s...there are moments that might not be child-friendly. Some of the stories have a more mature tilt and some of the drawings show the harsher realities of farming life.
Other than that, I truly loved this gorgeous book and I cannot wait to read the rest of my Poortvliet books.
Just a wonderful book. The illustrations are beautiful, fun, and at time harsh. The layout of the book has greatly improved from the layout of his first book. It really makes the artwork shine.
I enjoyed all the little notes throughout the book going over every aspect of rural life. I especially enjoyed seeing several regional costumes, and the work that goes into making and wearing them.
I also really enjoy the scenery pieces. Some not to far from my own local area. So this book felt pretty nostalgic at times.
I'm really happy to have this wonderful book in my collection.
